Talking about stereoscopic cameras.

I recently came by a View-Master Mark II which has a pretty interesting system to shooting stereo pics on regular 35mm film.

It loads the film diagonally, so that the frames belonging together are interleaved with other shots.

And that's what the resulting film looks like. You can fit about 75 stereo shots on a single 36 shot roll of 35mm film.

Looks like a pain to post-process though. Originally you'd use slide film and use a specific punching and mounting machine to create view-master reels from it.

Guys quick, I'm bulk loading film and I think I loaded the film roll upside down. When I load the canister is it supposed to be shiny side down (like it is now) or shiny side up?

Don’t even regret it. I have at least 80 rolls of random shit coming in the next few weeks. There are a ton of cheap “10 packs of film for $10” deals on eBay right now. I saw one that said “100 rolls of Fuji 200 for $15” which looked mostly like a scam, but I bought one order because worst case I lose $15 and best case I just got 3600 practice shots for the price of a couple lunches.

I got my canon P coming very soon after putting it in the mail 4 months ago. I have a nice 35mm for it, I’m going to stick with one lens as a way to force myself into that sort of “fixed focal length” limitation in the hopes it might make me think about framing differently. Then again, if the camera arrives and it isn’t working good enough still, I’m going to sell it and the lens and just pick up a Leica M lmao

Gotta tell you guys, I ordered what I thought was going to be 8 rolls of Fuji C200 from Amazon. Ended up getting 40 rolls in the mail in two packs each of ten, four packs. Most likely an error, a guy I know on fb tried to do it but only got 8 rolls.

they say its safe for films 1600iso or less, I believe some airports/countries have policies that let you ask for them to hand check your film. I have an x-ray proof film bag, i'll see if it raises any alarms (i'm brown) when I fly to portugal in october.

I just got my first film camera and when shooting in really bright settings my light meter tells me to shoot in shutter speed 'L'. I have no idea what L does and I'm too scared to shoot with it because I don't wanna waste film. Anyone know what this is?

It's not pink, the scan is just messed up.

I love mine. Really need to use it more. It will be the only camera I bring with me on my trip to 'Murica next week. Planned on bringing a new MF body, but it wont arrive before I leave.

It has some relatively heavy vignetting wide open.

Plus sensors don't play well if optics are too close compared to film, especially at wider angles.

Plus pixel peepers. It'd be great for 95% of situations, but someone would zoom to 300% in a corner and then shred it in a review and it's reputation would be ruined.

Are there any photo albums that are segmented in a way that you can:

>first store negatives for the roll
>after that you put all the prints of said roll
>store negatives for next roll, followed by prints
>and so on

Most albums I've found locally will just have one big pocket at the back of the album. I want to group my prints with their respective negatives.

Finally got back a roll of T-MAX 400 I handed in for development on June 20th. Majority, but not all, prints have a faint white line running across the top of the prints. Luckily I can't see anything like it on the negatives, so I hope it's not dirt inside the camera that damaged the roll.

I have some patience when waiting for film but this long was kind of stretching it. Going to test one more place, otherwise I'm just going to handle B&W myself...

Got an Elmar-C 90mm yesterday and shot a roll of HP5+.
Short 1:45min dev. time in HC-110 dil.B at 30°C, because it's fucking hot here. I really like the results wide open.

It's pretty fun how quick you can learn manual exposure if you really want to.

I have my spotmeter on me most of the time for when I need a precise exposure but most of the time sunny 16 is good enough.

They're expensive because they're a relatively rare commodity in relatively very high demand, with a very high hipster tax on them, moreover being used goods the better the conditions, the higher the price. If anyone were to make new cameras they'd have to go full economy of scale or it wouldn't work out economically, but demand isn't really that massive to sustain such production volumes; then they would end up with a new, unknown, expensive, but mediocre product (otherwise it would cost too much), that needs truckload of marketing and doesn't benefits from any hipster status: people would just keep buying what's already famous, or even prefer the old stuff because it's "original".

Just look at Lomo: they're making shitty overpriced cameras that cost way more than the old ones in their original unsealed packages, and they can do that only because they inherited the hipster status. If I were to buy a LC-A I'd get one with cyrillic lettering and the USSR logo because it looks cool to me and I'd still spend way less than the new one.

Making new stuff that has to compete with decades of perfectly good, if not even better, old stuff is just a bad proposition.

Same here, but the 90mm has its purpose. I think I'm mainly going to use it for portraits, but it's already been useful for architecture. Going to combine it with a 35mm, so I covered most situations.

My man, if you consider one, get the 100mm 3.5 canon ltm one. I would get one but I’m waiting on my canon P to return from the shop first. I saw what one looks like in size, it’s literally pocketable which is amazing for telephoto. The 100mm f/2 I hear is genuinely great, but it’s the size of an SLR telephoto: which means it’s staying at home.

There are suddenly multiple 100mm f/3.5s on eBay, all under 200 bucks. I’ve been searching for them on there for months and they don’t usually appear there in great number, so I’d consider getting one before I get it first.

I have the opposite problem, I’m adverse to shorter than 50 and I’m trying very hard to rectify that by moving to rangefinder. I’m finding 35mm to be a good starting point focal length. I feel that telephoto has a certain magic though, there is no major perspective showing, so the image is a bit “flat” — it has the look of a painting and not a wide angle look that is so common these days with the obsession with wide angles and iPhones having a 28mm equivalent focal length. I personally stay away from 28mm because I don’t feel like it’s a very genuine focal length. 50 feels wide to me sometimes, and 85mm is heaven. I see something, I frame it meticulously, I focus, I have a subject that pops out because the background is a bit blurry, I’ve made a painting on film. And I mean that not because of blue, but because most painters tend to paint their subjects with the perspective you’d see from an 85mm or longer lens.

A Leica will fit some of the best lenses for 35mm in existence. But a compact might be better if you only need 35mm f/2.8 and want a smaller camera than even a Leica.

Why the M3? It only has 50/90/135 framelines. If you want to use a 35mm, you have to get an external finder for it. M2 has 35/50/90/135 framelines. However, if you want to shoot 28mm without external finder, you have to go with M4-P or later.

Surely they wouldn't dump Velvia? iirc it is still used a lot in LF landscape photography as one of the remaining areas where film is still unsurpassed by digital.

Anyway I found myself on photography webshops looking for boxes of this stuff (I just bought this single roll out of curiosity) and now I can't wait using it with my RZ67 because this just deserves 6x7. Honestly can't believe I ignored the entire slide element of film photography for so long just because I can't RA4 it which I rarely do anyways.

I got an entire filter set and some things for the Cibachrome system for free some time ago but sadly the paper is impossible to come by.

Kek, exposure for landscape photography is the easiest thing ever, it's not like hills fly away or anything. I could understand the dynamic range could be a problem when shooting action but one must thoroughly hate himself to try that with iso 50. Also maybe if you'd try to shoot some black surface under a midday sunny sky but just use a filter for that.

For exposure I mostly use AE prisms both for my ETRS and RZ67 and they have never failed me

Personally I went with the A-1. Liking it so far: love the build, love the looks, but it falls really short of being perfect because

With negatives? Yeah I’ve never had issues. Full manual with modern negative films like Ektar is really not hard. If you see a bit of haze but it’s still bright, hazy 11. Can’t see shadows anymore very well? Cloudy 8. Raining? Depends on how hard, 4-5.6. Something in the shadow of a tree? For stops open from whatever you had. Dusk? Wide open.

Does anybody here develop at home? I've been following the Jobo/Patterson tank instructions pretty closely but keep getting a heavy cyan cast when I scan my negatives, reblixing didn't seem to help. It could also be my scanner (i900) but has anybody fixed this? 4x5 is too expensive to keep fucking up and the only lab I trust wants $3.50/shot.

is there any MF camera similarly compact to the LC-A 120 preferably with more control, a longer focal length lens, as well as an electronic shutter around the same price? as good as the LC-A looks as a beginner piece id like to see if I could get more for my money

The lc-a 120 isn't even that compact.

Take a look at this comparison for instance. The Bessa R is about the same size as the M4.
A 6x6 folder like the Bessa 66 is actually significantly smaller than the LC-A 120. Only downside being lack of an integrated meter.

It might have just been that I'm awful at Lightroom, but there were definite errors with earlier shots that I developed (scans are on a drive that I don't have with me) where you could see cyan shift only in parts of the image. Here's a 2nd attempt done in PS which I know a bit better. Path was Portra 400 @ box speed and standard C-41, then Vuescan outputting a raw Tiff

If you want something similar to the CL-A get an Olympus XA3. I'd recommend the XA3 over the XA2 since it meters to 1600, DX code and a +1.5 EV setting. All tho to push film in the XA3 you have to tape over the DX contacts and set the ISO on the camera.

I have about 15 packs of Fuji FP-3000B Packfilm that expired in 2017. Should I shoot it or sell it for the crazy high prices ($75-85 each) because packfilm might (MIGHT) be coming back?

Question about infrared film

I have come into a bunch of Kodak HIE infrared, I have 3 filters available, a red 25, an 850nm and 950nm infrared filters. Kodak says the cutoff for HIE is 900nm, so would the 850nm be alright, or should I shoot with the red 25 until I get an r72?

Yeah I'd get them done on a decent lab grade scanner. I've occasionally got access to a fuji frontier and scanning slides on that thing is fucking bueno, you actually get all the detail you see on the slide in the scan

What are the most durable 35mm cameras in your opinion?

My guess would be something like a zenit/Pentax spotmatic. Basically fully mechanical ones only requiring batteries for the meters. I feel like you could kill someone with one of these things desu

Tried Rollei ATP 1.1 only to find that backing paper had imprinted itself onto the emulsion. I guess one should only use this for 35mm. Great grain and contrast though and devs with just 1+300 Rodinal in 12 minutes.

Boys I've been fucked.
Just rolled, shot, and developed some film and the roll is transluscent. Here are the details:
The leaders are black
The film itself is clear
I can read the film name on the top and bottom but there are no developer marks
The camera is working perfectly and is lightsealed
The camera was metered for the correct iso
The developer is new (blazinal) and was used according to directions
>1 part dev (11.5ml) + 25 parts water (287.5ml) to fill a 300ml developing container for 6 minutes.

What the hell went wrong?

Mmm. I'm also trying out a new Minolta Hi Matic 7s. It has a little window where a red thing moves if the film advances. I could see a red thing move and feel the resistance when I rewound it followed by the feeling of the film popping off the takeup spool. Maybe i'll shoot another in a camera i've used before and see if it's still fucked.

Been offered both for around 500$ in my country, both still shoot pretty good.

I had a 500CM pass my hands and that thing was a blast to shoot. My workhorse is an FM2 but I want to get into medium format more.

I think it really depends what you're going to be using it for. The Mamiya 645 is considerably smaller and lighter than the RB67, but obviously the tradeoff here is that 6x4.5 negatives contain a fair bit less resolution and detail in comparison to 6x7.

I guess put it this way: it's quite hard to shoot the RB67 handheld, a tripod quickly becomes an essential part of the kit with one of those beast. In contrast, the M645 is easy to shoot handheld, and is designed to do so

the pictures on the bottom were developed a few weeks ago. taken in the 1920's or 30's. I'd say there is a picture here, though not a good one, resusts are better shooting a 70year old film today, then deving immediately, versus taking a film shot 70 years ago, and deving now. It's better to shoot old film at a lower iso, i.e. if its 10 year old iso 100, shoot iso 50. You can shoot it iso 100, but then it would be best to develop it for longer. Old film loses sensitivity, so it either needs more light (lower iso) or a longer dev time.

What's a sensible upgrade from an Olympus XA in your opinion, /fgt/?

I have a bunch of compacts but some of them don't really fit me as well as I would like, so I'm thinking of flipping a couple of them that are worth something, mainly the XA. Basically I'm looking for a decent to good lens, good enough AF and if possible, exposure compensation. Can Ricoh GR1's still be found on the cheap? It doesn't seem to be quite as memed as the Contaxes, and I'd be happy with 28mm.

My main gripe with the XA is the lens, which is just underwhelming in my opinion. I shoot black and white 90% of the time and it really brings that out when I'm printing any bigger. The other issue is the focusing - for how I shoot with compacts I wish I could just snap away one handed.

You can probably find Rollei Prego Xenars for relatively cheap. The lens is decent, though vignettes somewhat. Has flash override, +1.5 compensation mode, and also a pretty useless macro mode, in a Mju-sized package. Probably as good as it gets for under 100 bucks these days.

That's why I'm about to sell the XA, among a couple of other cameras. I shoot compacts most of the time since I literally always carry one, so it makes sense to me to look for a different/better compact if one can be had for non meme'd prices. If I spend money on a camera, I'd rather it be one that I use rather than sit on the shelf, or be a disappointment IQ wise like the XA.

If it seems like everything is too inflated, I guess I'll get an M-mount Voigtländer or something. I still want to flip the XA though, even if it's just to change things up a bit.

I suppose I don't -need- anything but my iPhone to take the photos I want, but is that any fun?

You shouldn't face any custom fees: AFAIK the UK is still in the EU, so if you shouldn't have any issue from buying from other EU countries.

Lens selection and user experience mainly, and specifically when comparing the electro 35 to an M3 the rangefinder itself, which is vastly better on the latter.
The M3 is a great camera. Maybe a bit overhyped as the second coming of camera christ by some, but it's undeniably one of the best. If you want to shoot a 50mm on a rangefinder you're not going to find anything better really.

If you're asking these questions I recommend you pick the Electro 35 over the M3 in any case.
The Electro 35 is a simple, decent camera and very beginner friendly.
The M3 is for collectors, dentists, and film shooters looking specifically for that "M3 experience" (mainly simplicity and uncompromised build quality), it's too expensive otherwise.

My first guess would be some extremely lazy repairman made a hole to access one of the rangefinder alignment screws.

I finally got around to doing some more work with the drum scanner. I had to do some initial maintainance and it's back up and running. Shot some Ektar as well as some Provia recently. A few of the Ektar scans are coming out pertty cool.

I'm a beginner at all steps of the process including shooting, here is a sample of a straight out of scanner Ektar scan. I think I had some sharpening turned on.

Yeah this is sorta what I thought, but I poke a like wire in it and it doesn't seem to go through all the way.

The guy I bought it from had no idea either (supposedly), but in the listing it did say that it had been overhauled with a new mirror and shutter assembly.

I've understood that I have to correct only when the important part is lit dimly and most of the stars are bright enough to not have to deal with reciprocity failure.

So this is a bit of a vent/blog while I try and get my head around what I'm dealing with. When I try to shoot with auto, the shutter locks in and doesn't come back up - so I'm keeping it on the manual adapter, which isn't the end of the world.

When I'm looking through the viewfinder, the light that lights up the shutter-speed (indicating what it would be if it were in AV and being selected automatically) disappears at times, but comes back when I switch the camera off and on. Is this just a defect or am I missing something?

I should be able to twist the exposure dial freely, right? There's a bit of a struggle with moving the auto setting, so it might just be a bit of dust that's dragging it down.

This is my first time shooting on film, and I'm resigned for this roll to be a bust. Got a couple of nice shots of my dog, but not worth the price of development.

Any suggestions for places in the UK btw? Online or in London?

Difficult to say anything without seeing the results, but I think I've done alright for myself for £30.

Hi!

Could /p/ reocommend me 35mm film camera under $66? What I wish for:

- no batteries needed to operate
- full manual mode
- something more accurate than zone focusing
- interchangeable lenses would be a bonus
- full frame, half frame, 1:1

I live in Poland and we have quite a lot of Russian cameras here, western models in good shape often cost more than I'd like to spend, but of course lucky shots happen and I'm not in a hurry at all.

Maybe a Praktica? East German stuff was generally better than Ukraine or Russia proper, since it wasn't siamese twins with the planned economy that was failing to scale up. Same for the glass, except for Helios-44M (for May-may).

Also, you'd be looking for Japanese cameras, not western cameras as such. M42 bodies can usually be had for about the same price as a good Praktica, and most of them have the batteries only running the meter (which'll be clapped out by now, most likely, anyway). And the lens ecosystem is fucking amazing.

NIkons and Canons are right out. You can't have this for that price in Potato, sad as it is. Where the hell is Kurwa when his countryman needs him?

I bouhght TLR for a price of Canons and Nikons which is kind of funny. There are a lot of Prakticas and a lot of models, it appears I won't have problems with finding one in a good condition on our local auction site, in the meantime I'll research Japanese cameras.

Also, I checked eBay and either I suck with searching, or shipping is ~$30 when price is normal or shipping is "free" with considerably higher prices.
