Why do people use film SLRs (usually some Olympus OM or a Canon AE) as props to put in the backdrop of videos or product photos that are on a desk? Like I notice it in watch videos and Juul used one in at least one product photo when usually they use high tech stuff.

Is it because DSLRs are ugly as fuck?

DSLR design is atrocious, they do not look at home with any other device designed in the last 20 years. Ugly rubber lump lookin' ass shit.

I don't think it would look that bad if they got rid of the arch on top with the brand name. It juts out in an odd shape for no discernible reason and uglies up the whole thing. That and modern lenses look like cheap plastic crap.

it's just marketing 101, use props relatable to your audience, and you just happen to frequently use/watch products whose audience largely prefer slrs
otoh if you're in the lifestyle consumer group then you will frequently see rolexes and leicas instead

I've got some vintage Nikon and Olympus glass, I prefer them both aesthetically and functionally to any modern lens I've handled. Are camera companies even trying any more?

Nice job cherry picking one of their most affordable (read: cheapy built) lenses thrown in with their cameras. Every modern kit lens sucks, if we talked about the Sony 16-50mm and its problems we'd be here all day.

Refresh my memory (recently picked up an a6000 that came with one of those 16-50mm carbuncles), which older Sony kit lens from the previous E-mount camera line was supposedly better?

The 18-55mm Sony kit lens was better although it's not exactly amazing optically either. Definitely better than the 16-50mm in everything except size. Build quality is much better and I prefer the twist zoom to the power zoom which eventually craps out.

The 18-105mm f4 is a better kit style zoom lens than either of those two. Sharpest zoom you can get for the A6000.

T. used both kit lenses over the years

Thanks for that. I've been enjoying fitting old glass to my a6000, but it seems like a shame to waste the autofocusing capabilities. I'll look into picking up the 18-105mm.

I think it's a combination of things. The rise of CAD and decline of standards in draftsmanship and paper planning in automotive, product and industrial design from the late 80's onwards certainly didn't help.

Well for cars there's at least a good reason why they all look like that: Aerodynamics really matters. Same reason why airplanes from different companies look almost indistinguishible.

I don't understand why they do it with cameras, though.

My hypothesis is that it's due to people's expectations. Take for instance bridge and some mirrorless cameras: they have no reason to resemble DSLR, as modern DSLR have no reason to keep the vestiges of film SLR's design, since you don't have to accommodate the film and the spooling mechanism anymore, but that is how people expect a camera to look like.

Think about a system where instead of having a mirror folding up, you have the sensor dropping down: this would allow for the camera to be designed pretty much like a handheld telescope. The grip with the controls could be placed in any position, possibly on a slider to match the center of gravity of the lens (+body of course). Basically it would become camcorder shaped.

So, camcorders with interchangeable lenses for still photography. I love this idea. No need to flip the sensor down with today's live view/evf. Lots of flexibly in placement of those tiny digital screens so you could have your telescope form factor.
Is there anything close to this already (aside from actual camcorders)?

Yeah, it's a good proof of concept, but strapping your smartphone to it is a really clumsy solution. Just think instead of having the smartphone having an EVF: such a design would be ground breaking.

Its kind of interesting that the SLR design had remained relatively unchanged for decades. Pic Related is dates to the 1960s and looks little different than my mid-1980s K1000
