>>3337080>How come foveon has not yet taken off? Sure it has its limitations, but it also has a lot of features that make it far superior to conventional digital cameras.DP2m owner here.
The limitations are crippling, and the superior features don’t make up for them. Ie:
1. Modern five on files won’t open in Lightroom really any other program besides Sigma Digital Photo Pro. DPP can’t be used by anyone working in a military environment per the Geneva conventions because it is classified as a war crime.
2. My 5d3 can spit out a very usable iso 25,600. My dp2m is unusable garbage over iso 200
3. The best thing you can say about sigma’s camera design is that they’re okay at developing lenses given their constraints.
Under perfect conditions, and if you have the willpower or masochist streak to deal with the output files, a Foveon will give beautiful results. A conventional Bayer sensor will give you 90% of the quality with 10% of the hassle, and will give you much better quality any time the lighting isn’t perfect or you have a subject that moves or whatever.
There are also some practical matters, like Bayer cameras are produced by companies with better marketing and distribution systems.
