Am I just a nostalgic sap or is there something truly magical about large format? This video shot on a shitty dslr and an old box camera produces video that captivates me way more than anything shot on 50,000 dollar RED epics.

I recently shot my first 10 pictures on a Sinar P2 (well 9 of them, messed up loading one of them).

I used it for portraits (I know that it’s not made for that, but it was the only camera I could get my hands on). The time it took for me to set it up gave my subjects time to breathe and relax. All of them told me that the fact that they were dealing with this huge camera and not a photographer, as I was using a black cloth, made them feel as they were by themself. I think you can see this in the pictures, every expression is spot on and a lot more centered than some of my other work. I think you can see this in the work of people like >Alec Soth as well.

The way large format renders space is unmatched by anything that came afterwards. Separation of subject, fixing your lines with optics instead of pixels, the pure presence of such a camera, digital users will never understand that there is so much more to photography than its technical brilliancy.

Large format is one of the last frontiers where photography combines craft and art. It makes you be a photographer, not somebody with a camera.

I ordered a kicker starter 4x5 recently, I hope I didn’t fall for a meme and should be able to shoot with it by November. I rarely have been so excited about something.

There's a digital 8x10 already, the LS911. It's just 12 MP and BW though.

I could still imagine a photo store having one for portraits, 12 MP is more than enough for normal print sizes.

It is quite impressive actually. You skip all the problems with film, yet retain everything the view camera has to offer. Of course, it is only digital, so you'd not be printing from film either. It all boils down to what camera and lens you use to "scan" the image.

This doesn't really work very well in most cases. Digital large format technical cameras suffer a lot from the angle at which the sensor is hit. This severely limits the movements you can do when compared to film. It's a very hard problem to solve sadly.

Image sensors require light er ntering perpendicular whichis why lenses became aspheric and why old lenses are more simple and suffer from heavy vignetting on digital.
Shifting also produces vignetting but the reason he's shifting is he can't put the digital camera in the way of the large format projection. He shoots parallel but off-axis with a shift, so everything will be in focus with no keystone distortion.
The digital cameras wide angle lens probaply is aspheric so the main issue he's facing is high iso to film the faint projection

I was talking about the Sinar. It’s too overpowered for just about any portrait. The size and weight are just not worth it.
Talking about documentary photography, I actually carried that thing around for a week.

The Sinar was build for technical brilliancy and absolute accuracy. There are around 14 knobs for you to set up the camera. This allows you to work inch perfect when dealing with geometric forms like architecture or product shootings.
A typical portrait doesn’t need most of this. Even when using the camera to its fullest potential, most of its abilities are left unused. Since all this precision comes with the price of bulkiness and weight I wouldn’t consider the Sinar ideal for portraits outside a studio setting.

Think of it that way: you wouldn’t bring a portable flash unit when a hotshooe flash could do the job just as well.

I think I posted it in the fgt, but the first time I brought my 4x5 outside and composed wide open it was astounding. It wasn’t at all like looking at a digital screen, and not at all like the real life thing.

That said, the video was a bit of a meme. Large format digital will be cool one day simply because it could really lead to incredible sharpness and low light magic which could open up new avenues in digital photography, but shooting a ground glass projection literally kills the magic of seeing it in real life. I tried taking a video of a ground glass for my gf to see it and it looked incredibly mediocre, like a digital screen with lots of glare. It’s just something that has to be seen to believe
