I'm thinking about investing in a Nikon d850 for professional photography... (Portrait and product photography and video).... Does anyone have any experience or opinion? Also does anyone have any experience combining DX lenses with FX bodies?

buy a new 70-200 2.8 instead, no point getting a ff camera for events and portrait unless you have this lens.

The lens will also work great on your crop body, until you can later afford the body, and by that time the d850 will have dropped in price, but the 70-200 will still cost the same.

I have a D850.
I turn off the automatic crop with dx lenses.

I have a few dx lenses that produce decent results with a little bit of vignetting but not black corners.

the 35mm 1.8 dx is a good example of a dx that works pretty well in fx mode.

the 40mm 2.8 dx macro is another.

I've have also used the Tamron 10-24 Di II at 14mm in standard FX or full 10mm in square 1:1 crop mode and really like it.

I shoot convention pictures for giggles

have the Tamron 24-70mm and 70-200mm,
don't get to use the 70-200 as much as want though because it's so tight in the convention spaces

yes can confirm 35mm 1.8 DX works in a pince too

I have to agree with you. Turning this feature off was one of the best things I could have done on my D750. I have some lenses that hardly show just the fringes around the edge which sometimes is a nice effect and I'm not cropping anything.

You're better off for Canon or Sony for video work.

Sony lenses in particular have declickable aperture for their high-end primes.

Turn off the automatic crop mode. The majority of nikon DX lenses only have mostly correctable vignetting with tiny black corners when fully open. Third party DX lenses like Sigma, Tamron and the like tend to have a true DX circle of projection though, so you're kind of fugged in that regard.

f2.8: 11-24, 24-70, 70-200 or the
f1.8: 35, 50, 85

Sigma 30/1.4 art is very much usable on full frame nikon. Some vignetting and extreme corners are mushy, but doesn't really matter in most cases.

If You happen to wear eyeglasses, using DX lens on FX body might be good idea, in a sense that You actually see whole image while composing. With FX lens eyeglass wearers often have to move head a little to get corner to corner view.

If you want a studio workhorse working in fashion in particular then Hasselblad or Phase One will be the only things that won't get you laughed off stage. Only 'prosumers' use 35mm dslrs.

Get something else for video, Red One MX for example is a great buy right now.

Do you beat it against walls or something? I own the 70-200 f4 Nikon and I have carried and shot with it in pouring rain with no issues which is enough.

I have the G2 24-70, yeah its pretty fast focusing at least for my uses. Sharpness is pretty good across the range, I did notice a bit of a hit at the 70mm end, but nothing would be too worried about unless super pixel peeping. It is my favorite general lens to use. the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 g2 is a sharpness beast to use if you can get past its horse-cock size

Nah, works for full professionals too. You're easily delivering good enough shots to retain commercial customers with a higher-end FF body and you know, great glass and lighting.

But sure, you're not likely to be the celebrity that they put on stage soon - Hasselblad / Phase One big gun or not. Just do a good job and see if it works out, eh. It's often a very competitive environment, and the fewest customers are looking to pay very top dollar for the best gear and work.
