Opinions on scanning with dslr? I would prefer a macro lens and a light table over dedicated scanner because it's much smaller. Hows the hassle with dslr scanning and quality compared to a Plustek 8200?

I can see it without even opening the image. Big dust splotches. It happens, I'm not going to attack you for it, but it does detract from your image.

It takes 2 minutes to fix, just click all the dust spots with the heal tool and you're done. It'll result in a much nicer image.

I just found 4 fully-exposed but unprocessed APS cartridges (shot with my old Olympus i Zoom 75) while cleaning some stuff but apparently no labs in my country can process them anymore (35, 120, etc are fine but no APS), are there good international mail-in online services?

I'm just a student, and I have a lot to study: won't be able to take a break (even just getting out for the sake of it) until October. I thought about shooting a roll or two at home, as a creativity project so to speak, but the cost of the operation compared to the benefit (I always try to shoot things I want to keep a memory of, it helps coping with the expenses) is stopping me.

I asked in other thread just before it died but is there any app for the iphone that allows me to see in-camera the effects of colored filters for black and white? I just shot some film with yellow and red filters, but I didn't use them correctly and everything ended up the same hue, I would live a live-action preview from my phone to see which to use (until I get better at it)

One article said "Hueless", but its not updated for iOS 11

Can't help you there, but your best chance is to just take a photo, and process it with snapseed or lightroom on the spot: you just need to remove all other colors (if you have a red filter, remove green and blue) and then make it greyscale.

It covers my needs. Maybe lacks a 28mm and some UW, but I probably won't use these very often. Seriously, I wouldn't have sold the Blad for a digital camera, but as you got the Rollei, 6x6 is still covered. If it's a K4A, we got the same model. Also got a Mamiya Press that I rarely use.. it's just too clunky. I also gave away the MF scanner and don't shoot a lot of MF because of this.

Controversial opinion but the leica cameras are worth it, the Leica lenses aren’t. Largely because everyone who uses a Leica is using it for street, and everyone using it for street is shooting the lens at least at f/4, often f/8. Everyone here who has shot an SLR with Velvia 50 and put it under a loupe knows that at f/8 you can usually get close to out-resolving Velvia with a middle-end SLR lens. Zeiss and Leica M mount lenses are very sharp at wider apertures and have basically no distortion, but I feel it rarely matters since you can’t really enlarge 35mm much anyways without looking like ass (if you enlarge to museum-size it’s ok though as long as people are looking at it from far away at some bench. Smaller sizes people will stick their nose in and see icky grain)

Large format killed my desire for Leica gearfagging desu. I love small format rangefinders but because they’re stealth and portable and let you concentrate on the scene in front of you much more so than the digital small format cameras that easily out-class them resolution wise

There's certainly some truth in this statement. However, being able to use a lens at any aperture and get a sharp photo is what makes those special. At most lenses you have to stop down at least 1-2 stops to get acceptable sharpness. Shooting the Biogon, or Summicron at f/2 produces wonderful results, both in terms of sharpness and out of focus rendering. The latter also is also affected by the transition from the sharp area to the oof areas. If a lens isn't sharp by f/8, you could also use the bottom of a glass bottle.

So, I shot a roll of kodak HIE in my nikon f3, roughly trusted the meter, set at 200 through a red 25 filter. And the whole roll is super faint

Any idea whats going on? developed in hc110b for 5 mins.

Hi /fgt/,
What could be causing the "white" part at the right of the image?
I'm new to film, I'm using a minolta x700, only 2 shots out of a 36 roll have the issue, the first roll I tried with the camera didn't show this but I was using a MD rokkor f1.7 lens for the first roll and I'm using a MD rokkor f1.4 lens with the rolls that show the problem, could it be the lens that makes this?
The shots that have the issue were taken using the Aperture priority setting with f8 or f11, I made many other shots with the same settings and they don't have this problem.

It is a light leak, hard to tell where.

I suspect it is the shutter though. The X-700 uses a cloth shutter. If you leave direct sunlight blasting through a lens with the cap off (especially a wide aperture one like the f/1.4), it can eventually leak through the cloth shutter.

Someone convince me not to buy a Leica iii. I was considering an M3 but it's quite a bit more expensive. Was thinking of a CLE but that's still M mount, so I probably would just need to stick with whatever lens I get with it since I wouldn't be able to afford more lenses in any reasonable amount of time.

I was looking at a IIIF. Then I figured for a little more I could get a III G, then I realized for a little more I could get a CL. And a little more a CLE.

Now I have the whole CLE set w/ the 3 rokkor lenses. Cost me like $1,500.

All I wanted was a cheap like LTM body...

the D800 is to SLR scan my 4x5 negs, getting RA4 chem in Canada is bloody well impossible so I have to print digitally now.
Blads come and go, I have owned 3 now and will probably buy another some day.

Hasselblad and Rollei 35 are kinda the same to me in that I will buy one, shoot 25-50 rolls through it in a few months and then put it down for a year or two before selling it. I have also owned dozens of Nikon SLRs but I usually buy them to resell them and maybe shoot a roll or two through it to say that it works.

I'm getting real tired of my epson v600's level of quality with 35mm and am getting onto the plustek boat.

Only im not sure which one to get, will the 8100 be fine or should I go for the 8100SE or 8100AI?

Don't buy the AI, you're just paying for software you might not even use. The infrared is useful to get rid of some dirt if you're too lazy to clean the film but you will on a pixel level see the algorithm's work.

The learning curve is quite big with dslr scanning but once you get your workflow together you can scan a roll quite fast with very good quality. I personally have built a film holder, which is backlit by smartphone and I can scan the roll in about 10 minutes (including setting up thr tripod). The actual scanning takes about 3 minutes. The colour correction can be hard at first and 90% of the people who bash dslr scanning were just too incompetent to do it correctly.

If you shoot a lot of color, I recommend getting a Plustek XXXXi. The infrared dust removal works great and saves a lot of time. Not sure in regards to SE/AI, but as far as I get it, the difference is only the software version that comes with it. I'm using Silverfast SE and it works fine.

If your budget allows it, the Plustek 135 is way faster and more automated than the 8100 with basically the same output quality. If you care about dust and scratches removal, the 8200i is the cheapest. If you have money to burn go for a Reflecta Proscan 10T.

It's fairly expensive everywhere since nobody other than hipsters are buying it. Low demand, high prices.

You can get Fuji C200 cheap on AliExpress and I find that eBay sellers have it a bit cheaper than Amazon. Also you can shoot expired film if you really want to stretch your pennies.

Depends: macodirect.de and fotoimpex.com are famous enough in Europe, and have decent prices too, but shipping is expensive and to make it worth it you need to buy a truckload of film per shipping. Every nation has its bunch of sites similar to those just mentioned, and prices usually don't deviate too much, moreover if you're lucky you might live near one of those, and with a relatively short drive you might be able to save the shipping costs. Just google.

Well, if you have the time why not?

No way to know beforehand. I woudln't get discouraged: for instance my local photographer sells ColorPlus 200 at something like €3.50 which is a decent enough price (but I dislike that film and it's the only film he stocks).

yeah, my local guy has 24exp rolls of c200 for €2.50 and 36exp of kodak colorplus for €2.75. i can't find anywhere online that's such good value.
reckon it's a loss leader? they dev, print and scan in-house so maybe they figure most of the rolls will come back for printing and they make their money there

You could get a CL and a 40mm Nokton. Costs about 500-600eur. Still cheaper than the CLE with lens and if you consider getting a Canon P, a broken light meter of a CL shouldn't bother you.

I'd strongly suggest the Canon 7 over the P if you're going to use a 35mm. The 35mm framelines on the P take up the whole viewfinder where the 7's framelines are closer to the center.

I wouldn't say cumbersome but it is not spontaneous, it takes on average 10-30min to set up for a shot. It all makes sense and has a logical flow.
They are great for landscape, I use mine for landscape, portraits, and work with a few artists to make photographic based artwork.
The hardest part is that you need a lot more light than with 35 or MF, if you are happy with your dof on 35 at f8, you will be looking for f16 or f22 on 4x5.
I have a 800w/s strobe pack which is more than enough for 35mm but barely adequate for the LF

Never thought about that, but it sounds logic. Only checked the LF of a friend and came to the conclusion that it isn't for me. Dragging all that stuff around is too much of a hassle to me, especially considering that I barely use the Press because of its size and weight.

Good to know. I haven't fully decided what focal length I'll go for, but since it'll mostly be for travel + street 35mm seems like a good idea. Maybe I'll swing by a local camera shop and see if they have two I can compare.

M7 is fine if you're an aperture priority babby like me, and want to shoot a camera spontaneously rather than twiddling your settings for each shot. I've got a proper reflected-light meter for the long game anyway. Hardly use the manual mode on my OM-4Ti anyway.

I'd also like for M6 prices to go down so that I can have one of those as well.

If you want to shoot with a 35mm, the M3 isn't for you - it lacks 35mm framelines and you'd need an external viewfinder to frame accurately. If you consider an M and want to shoot 35mm, you have to get an M2, or later. On the other hand, if you don't mind the smaller lens selection you get with an ltm Canon P/7, you should rather go for a Bessa R. You can adapt all ltm lenses to an M-mount camera, but not vice versa.

Hmm, the Bessa R is a bit pricier than the Canon p/7, but not out of my price range. What are some good affordable (less than $200) M mount lenses? I used a Bessa and then got an M4-P. Problem with the Bessa is that it never hangs straight unless you put a heavy lens on it. The viewfinder is great and at least as bright as the one on my M. For both, ltm and M you can get a Voigtländer Color Skopar 35mm 2.5. It's one of the cheapest lenses around and produces very good results (image related, shot wide open).

Thanks, just downloaded this, the filter option works great. The only thing is it doesnt do it in a live-mode, only photos that are already taken, but I can work with this for now.

Where do you guys get your film developed? My town is 130k population but I haven't found any small shops; the walmart/walgreens places mail off to contracted developers and then they don't mail the negatives back. I'm in CA so the $11 darkroom mail-in option seems the best.

I installed that on my windows 7 machine first. I couldn't get that to work with Vuescan. It did however get the 'quickscan' function to appear on my copmuter, though I didn't use it.

I got a few rolls of Fujichrome 50RF that was from at least a decade ago. It was apparently cold stored. I shot pic related at ISO 33 and this is the result.

What can one do when old slide looks like this to get a clearer image? Shoot at ISO 12? Shoot at ISO 12 and tell the lab to push 1 stop?

update. installed the drivers on the 7200, looks fine. the built in quickscan works. get rather predictable results (see pic related). but vuescan still doesn't work. going to torrent the full version and see if that works.

Tried out a Bessa R and just said fuck it and bought it. The store owner threw in an Industar 50mm 3.5 for pretty much free, any suggestions for good cheap LTM lenses? The store owner recommended the Jupiter 8, and the Canon 50 1.8 seems to be popular online and is fucking dirt cheap on eBay.

I have those three as my LTM setup. I bought a canon 50mm f1.4 but haven't shot any film with it yet, just fucked around with it on my digi bodies.

the color skopar is a match made in heaven with the bessa r though -- a proper (bright!!!!) rangefinder 35mm setup the size of a fuji x100 but much lighter. my go to setup in the cooler months when i can just throw it in a jacket pocket.

I wouldn't bother with russian lenses unless you are dirt poor
voigtlander color skopar lenses are nice as were mentioned. they have an almost Nikon look to me. Old screw mount Leica glass is cheap good and has tons of character, my 60ish year old Summicron is almost as sharp as my modern ZM Planar, The Hektor lenses are bashed for their simple design but I love the look of my 135, even if you don't use them tat often they are cheap enough just to keep around

Congrats on a nice camera that is going to serve you well for quite some time. As mentioned earlier, I recommend the Skopar 35mm 2.5. In ltm there are two versions of it, one with a focus lever and one without. While both use the same optical formula and glass, the one with focus lever matches the dedicated hood, while the one without only matches 43mm screw-in hoods. It's not the fastest, but a fine lens and compared to f/2 lenses, it's only 2/3 stops slower. The Industar 50 is also slow, but I got some pretty sharp examples of it (again, image related and shot wide open). Personally, I prefer its classic Tessar rendering over the Sonnar one of the Jupiter 8.
If you feel the need for another 50mm, I recommend the Skopar 50mm 2.5. It's also 2/3 stops slower than the Jupiter, or 1 stops slower than the Canon 50, but comes with a focus tab and modern coatings. Check flickr, but especially rff for examples of possible lenses.

I've been on the road for work for the last few months, but haven't really be able to shoot. Did another two weeks in Palestine in May, shot some rolls in the Andes during a job after that, heres a few frames from the Maras Salt Pools. My instagram has some of the Palestine stuff.

These are actually on a Rollei 6x6 but the frame is all fucky so I've just taken to adding a Hasselblad border after scanning. I use an Epson V850 with Silverfast. I used to use a V700 with the Epson software and de-dust in Photoshop but Silverfast has seriously turned my life around.

I'm working on a book about physical divisions between groups of people, which started with work from Northern Ireland I posted on here last May, plus a few trips since then to the West Bank. I'm trying to go to North Africa next, there are two Spanish colonies there with big border fences. The Georgia/South Ossetia border may also factor in, particularly if I move from NYC to Eastern Ukraine next year.

If you shoot 120 you have no choice, but get a flatbed. The Epson V600 should fit your budget. Be advised that scans will be sufficiently good for 120, but it just doesn't cut it for 135. If you shoot more 135 than 120 then it's preferable to get a 135 scanner; your options here are Reflecta 7200, Plustek 8100, 135, or 8200i: they should all be within your budget, give or take, and they all have similar characteristics, but with a different tradeoff each.

Been trying to find a decent, Fast, 35mm lens for my FD's. It suits for a lot of what I'd normally be doing with a camera, where the 50mm I have is a bit too long and the 28 is too slow.

There is a 32mm Canon F2 FD but that's about it. Most of those turning up on ebay seem to be in fairly ratarse condition at best.

Has anybody had much success using F-mount to FD adaptors like the one below?

Because a Samyang 35mm F1.4 is just about inside my budget, and would actually come with a warranty, a factory, spare parts and the ability to be used on more than just the old F-1 and T70.

It'll also work with an F55 I found in an Oxfam in town and give it soimething to do beyond exist. There's also the Nikon 35mm F1.4's but the news ones are arse-bleeding - although the F2 is about twice the price as the ebay Canon lenses and half the Samyang.

The weekly clashes are pretty standard in the momentum and tempo. I was there during Nakba and the protesting after the Embassy move, which were larger but for the most part my work has centered on the Barrier Wall. No, you cant avoid the washer with ECN-2 film. What you can do is buy some other film stock. That's what I found to be the cheapest fine grain color film to bulk load for me, but you may find some good deals on regular C-41 stocks.

I’m also looking at some soft portrait 8x10 lenses from the 40s or older. Something unique that isn’t an Aero Ektar of some sort, since I’m shooting color mostly and the back elements of those is brown as shit due to the thorium in the glass. Any ideas? Apparently there are a lot of 300ish mm lenses that are f/4.5 or faster from the 20s and earlier. Of course it wont be sharp but the point of 4x5 for me is to escape grain, not escape softness. And because tonality is hardly a meme, I find it very obvious even on a phone screen to tell if something was shot large format

I originally got my 4x5 for landscape shots but then realized I hate landscapes for the sake of landscapes. I need to be shooting people or at least something with a human touch in order to sustain my interest.

The plastic fantastic that came with it will take pictures and work.

Pic Related. A Nikon F55 found for €15 in a charity shop, with 35-80mm kit lens.

Nikons of these era are basically the best film cameras ever made. Even the budget consumer models are the sum of everything Nikon learned to that point, wrapped into an idiot-proof package.

The J8 is easy to CLA, but you have to be careful with the screws, as their heads easily break apart. My Jupiter worked fine on the Bessa without shimming. Just make sure the glass has no major scratches and maybe look for a version with focus knob.

Does anyone here develop their own film? How hard is it to use the portable darkroom kits? I looks like a skill due to only being able to do it by feel alone.
Also for those that do develop at home, what do you scan with? I'm seeing cheap scanners and then rather expensive ones. I wonder that unless I'm doing a lot it would be cheaper to just send the rolls off to a lab.

DX lenses won't work. They'll only expose a small part of the frame. You'll need an FX lens to get the full frame of film imaged.

At the same time, if you do want something interesting looking, it's worth a shot.

Yeah, even medium format has this effect.

When you see how much more resolution and sharpness a $300 mid range medium format camera and lens can give you compared to 35mm, you lose all appetite to spend an extra $500 on a 35mm format lens for +15% resolution/sharpness.

There are plenty of old folders out there which take 120 if you really can’t spend more, but they generally have poor ergonomics and reliability. As the other anon said, you’re better saving up and waiting for a good deal on a TLR. I got my first Yashica-Mat for £80. If budget is a real concern, don’t shoot MF. It ain’t cheap.

K1000 is a pretty rudimentary camera compared to the other two.
I'm personally a fan of the OM line because of its shutter speed selector ring around the lens mount. I find it more intuitive than the standard knob on the top plate, and it made learning exposure pretty easy

Yeah, and it'll look just like normal film shot under daylight. If you shoot unfiltered it looks mostly normal too, just a tad cooler (but not extremely blue like some people think). Pretty easy to correct in scanning.

Nah this is really important, otherwise it's unusable, you can't scan or print it with the remjet. The only better choice than the homemade baking soda mix, is either Kodak's official wash (comes in huge quantities only), or someone reselling it in smaller quantities.

That depends on how you meter. If you have a camera that meters through the lens (like most slrs do) you don't have to adjust the exposure.

It's an XA2. Both are good, the XA2 has the three levels of focus with near focus being a total crapshoot. It's basically a "hope to God it's in focus" system for me, I try to keep my subjects under 3m away and on the middle focus setting. In saying that it fits in my palm, the shutter is almost completely silent, and it works well on the streets since it doesn't really *look* like a camera to most people. So it's ideal on the streets I'd say.

The OM-10 is a super compact SLR, out of the box it's a forced aperture priority camera where the camera picks shutter speed for you. You have to buy the manual adapter to make it fully manual. If you're used to aperture priority on digital cameras you can keep it on auto and snap away. I mostly use an OM 24mm f2.8 and an OM 50mm f1.8, I don't feel a need to buy other lenses yet.

Also try Pentax Spotmatic.

It's mechanical, manual, but with an excellent battery meter, that for whatever reason, includes voltage regulation so it'll work with modern battery voltages.

The early stop-down versions are better than the later stop-down versions - the meter can't be turned off on new ones, only blanked off by placing a lens-cap on.

It's also nicely compact in the hand.

Are film formulas still as good as they were in the 90s and before? As I'm scanning negatives from the early 90s the pictures look pretty great, but so far most of the film from the early to mid 2000s have been grainy, crushed contrast and overall ugly. Is modern kodak still as good now as it was?

Depends on the film stock really, I shot this on some Fuji Superia Xtra 400, but you can get much better results from stuff like Portra and Ektar, But this is what you can expect from cheap film in this current year.

I could give a million reasons as to why I like it, one of them being it's grain texture works well with skin, but all of them are my own opinion. To put it simply, I like it, but I have also spent the greater part of the last year learning how to use it best.

Well Fuji Superia in my experience really does not play well with overcast weather, which looks to be the case here. Things get really washed out and flat when there is lots of cloud cover.

I’m running into this scenario now. I bought an M9 and am happy enough with it for colour especially that suddenly I’m wondering what the fuck I’m going to do with my like 5 35mm bodies.

Time to ramp up home dev b/w and see if that’s enough to justify keeping it going. 15 exposures on 645 seems just about right for me too, I end up letting 36exp rolls sit in my cameras too long.

Of all the 35mm systems I had, my old Minolta SRT 101 with 58 1.4 was my favorite. That setup was just phenominal it was like having a time machine every time I used it. 60's and 70's Minolta lenses are legendary.

If you go with FD mount, try to score a cheap T90 or an A-1, or if you got the cash an F-1. The T90 was my favorite FD camera I shot with and it uses AA batteries and has an integrated motor drive. It's basically the Genesis for all current EOS cameras, they were all based on the T90 that was designed by Luigi Colani.

What do you /fgt/s think of FP4? What's the best developer for it in your opinion? How about compared to Acros and T-max 100?

I shoot mostly HP5 and usually don't touch these slower films.

T-max 100 has Clyde Butcher's seal of approval. He uses it exclusively, and develops in Accufine. I'm not sure what he is using for a fixer though, I think he uses Photographer's Formulary TF-5.

HC-110, specifically Dil. B is for max grain, Ansel Adams used that combo with Tri-X 320, shot at 200 speed. I used it on Fomapan 200 and got good results, the composition was shit but the contrast and grain was astonishing.

Acros has 2 MINUTES before reciprocity failure kicks in.
It has only slightly less resolution.
Looks good in any developer.

I find T-max to be a little too contrasty. Using XTOL, which is the recommended dev for it by Kodak.

Sometimes, but I use MF and LF and very often need to use f/22 or greater. Add filters to that, and I often get times beyond 1 second.

Acros is better than ANY 400 speed film for long exposures. T-max 400 is the only film coming close.

First time 'long exposure' in this context makes sense to me. Always thought it was strange when people were crying about Acros being discontinued, but I only thought about 135 and wondered who uses some 100 film for long exposures anyway.

I think the fogginess on the middle of the picture is X-ray fogging, and that's after I toted this roll from the US to the Israel and back and pushed it to 3200

Portra is always a safe bet. Try some 800, too. It's really nice for shooting around dusk.

I just shot my first roll of Cinestill 800, and I am loving these tones.
