ive been wanting to upgrade to a mirrorless since im still using a T3i.
When I heard about this coming out, i held off to see how it is. but yeah, all of these videos im watching about it seem so underwhelming.

Some of those D lenses were nice, also remember those D lenses were made to resolve 35mm which with a proper scan is a hell of a lot more than 45mp.

A few of them were atrocious like the 28 2.8 I couldn't even give that damn thing away on Craigslist. But you also had lenses like the 85 1.8 D which were almost distortion-free. And the 75-300 AF-D was decent when stopped down.

That being said, if true this is just a Sony A7 with a Nikon badge. The whole point of buying into a Nikon system is to have access to legendary glass from yesteryear and this thing won't let you do it.

No. It's maybe like 12 MP with most ISO 100-400 films, perhaps more with some crazy slow films. But you're not getting more than maybe 24 MP of data from a 35mm scan, and if you think you are, you're just scanning at higher res and getting enlarged, but blurry, details.

Everyone has a different "point" for owning a mirrorless camera.

Some do it for the size and weight.

Some do it for technology advances like shorter flange distance, EVF, and much larger AF coverage area.

Some do it to use old lenses with modern sensors and have access to 5 axis IBIS and AF.

Some do it for any combination of the above. But there is no one singular reason mirrorless is bought, it's different for everyone.

I'm pretty sure that's the point. People kept bitching about Nikon and Canon still making D-SLRs and being 'stuck in the past'. Now one of the big, ancient companies got their feet wet in these waters and people are still complaining because it's "too much like Sony". Why make it wildly different than Sony if Sony has been so successful? IMO it was smarter to make it more like the Sony cameras because then you can combine most benefits of shooting Nikon cams with Sony cams. They even made them slightly bigger, because people were actually saying the Sony cameras were too small.

Unless you manage to somehow drop the front or rear element onto something sharp and protruding, the glass is usually the last thing to go in a lens. Of course, my only experience is with actual glass - no idea how the acrylic lenses Nikon are palming off on people nowadays handle abuse.

Nikon will release a battery grip which will have an extra card slot. They have an HDMI output port. It's a no brainer because the battery grip is still in development, and wedding photographers will appreciate the xtra battery life anyways.

$250 for the adapter although pre-orders will be able able to get $100. AFAIK, it's essential because there's almost no lens out right now for the Z mount.

There's youtubers mentioning how the FTZ adapter works for third party lens. That's a huge cost advantage for those with Nikkor, Sigma, Tamron F mount glass.

The lack of AF-D lens AF compatibility is disappointing, but I'd imagine Nikon would have to make another adapter with a screw drive motor for it to work. That might cost more, and maybe? developed.

The 330 shots are by CIPA standard, and done with a flash taken every other shot. Not real world usage, because even the original A7 by Sony had been rated by CIPA to have 250 shots

The lack of 4k 60fps is disappointing, but this is Nikon's best video camera by far. It's actually competitive instead of being completely irrelevant.

There can be many reasons.

Nikon is bragging about designing sensor. Maybe their design team only knows about DSLR, and suck at idle power consumption of the sensor.

The sensor is BSI, which is a technology made possible by the newer type of manufacturing, so we can reasonably assume the manufacturing process for sensor is reasonably new. So that's off the list of suspects.

Manufacturing process for Expeed 6 is a different story. We can't know how old that shit actually is.
My own pet theory is Nikon leadership has played the politics game, and specifically subcontracted the foundries who use the Nikon Lithography machines.
The problem is Nikon's lithography machines suck dicks.
Nikon was dominating that market in the 1990's, but nobody buys Nikon lithography machines anymore because they suck compared to ASML these days.
So that's when I believe Nikon leaders became political, and still want to sell a lot of that old equipment. And the best way to do this is to become a customer at the foundries who buys lithography machines from Nikon.
That's my theory of how Expeed processors became sucky.
It might be false though.

XQD only is probably also way more of a hold back for some people compared to a hybrid.
I have a stack of fast SD cards that cost me quite a lot (64gb, 45€/card). Having to replace them and leave them unused is quite a turnoff. Just another added cost to the allready overpriced camera.
With a hybrid you could have at least given people the possibility of a slow transition.

I can definitely understand that. I remember seeing CFast SD adapters around so it might be possible.

Going forward I don't see SD lasting forever though. XQD outperforms the fastest available SD cards by about 100MB/s and the new CFExpress card anounced by ProGrade writes at 1000MB/s (XQD: 400MB/s, SD: 300MB's)

I was just thinking, the Z7's buffer is 18 shots. The D850's 14-bit lossless compressed raws are like 50-55MB. So with CFExpress it would take about a second to clear the buffer. I wonder if they took that in consideration when deciding on such a small buffer size.

XQD cards are generally priced equivalent to their SD counterparts of the same aproximate speed. (In Europe at least). If at some point a chinese manufacturer starts cramming them out you can expect to see prices drop, but for that adoption is needed first.

Theoretically at least. If you put a fast XQD in a D500 you could just keep going, it will stop at 200 shots because that is a firmware limit (to prevent overheating I assume). The D850 at 14-bit raw will slow down at 80 something shots IIRC.

I think this one >>3344225 pretty much sums up my reasoning. My 35mm f2 AF-D lens is better than the 35mm f/1.8 AF-s (the FX version). Yes the autofocus is faster but it's not really my priority.

And I know, to some of you americans it sounds like a strange fantasy thing but there are insurances, for your photography equipment.
I pay 5€/month and could drop my camera in water, get it stolen, trip the tripod over or what ever and would get it all replaced. Thats a pretty cheap price for peace of mind.

By optically what do you mean? I'm saying the 35mm f/1.8 FX and not the DX because the DX version is pretty good compared to the FX version.
The 35mm f/18 FX is overpriced. The 35mm f2 has better color saturation and rendering. Affordable as well.

As if sharpness is all that matters. The sharpness of the 35mm at F2 is sufficient for me. Some actually prefer that their portraits at f2 isn't that sharp because it hides their blemishes.

No, it's not. I've scanned thousands of frames shot on different films from 1940s to late 2000s and I can assure you that no general-purpose film comes even close to that figure. Maybe some ISO 25 technical film does, but regular lenses aren't made with that in mind. The best I've seen is an equivalent of 20-25 MP from Provia and Velvia; modern consumer films like Superia 200 are more like 12 MP, and films from the 70s and earlier rarely can match even a 8-10 MP camera.

When everybody says they are the designer, it simply loses all meaning.

A foundry like Sony has the various technologies and designs already made and put together in building blocks.
The clients like Nikon, Phase One, Fujifilm, etc then comes to Sony and put together a list of features and specs and telling Sony which building block colours they want and where, and how many of them, etc.
This is still a massive stretch to call this a "designing".
The building blocks were researched and designed by Sony to begin with.

It's very rare when a small company goes to Sony and choose to build a chip made out of the white building blocks.
The rarest example I can come up with is probably Sigma and their Foveon sensors, those are made out of the grey building blocks and the white ones. That's an example where you can say they truly own that shit, they own the IP and all the patents to the technologies in the sensor.

I wish people would stop using this term so loosely.

Some people would go as far as claiming Nikon designed the sensor, simply because they wrote the firmware for said sensor.

Companies who need Medium format sensors don't really have a choice but to use Sony.

Nikon could try to find another foundry, but this won't be without risks to move away from the class leading foundry, because most other foundries specialize in other things like cpu logic.
At the end of the day, even Nikon needs to best foundry to get the best performing sensors.

The truth is Nikon is fighting off smartphone manufacturers for the privilege of having capacity at the Sony foundry.

Sony own all the relevant parents, they came up with all the technology, what the fuck are they going to learn off Nikon? The actual bom cost of the wafers is negligible to Sony, regardless of what tech they put in, except bsi and stacked, which will slightly increase costs of production.

Nikon just get given a tick sheet of what features they want and relevant costs to use that ip.

Sony will always put it's best sensors in it's own cameras and will never sell their sensors at a price point that they risk giving themselves competition over.

We've just seen this with Nikon, they are selling the z6 at a loss and it's worse than the a7iii by a considerable margin.

Same story with Fuji, selling $1000+ crop bodies, except they had the intelligence to change the CFA and iso rating so you can't do an apples for apples comparison.

Pentax took a last generation sensor for their k1, again a smart choice, sensor tech moves slowly, and whilst Pentax can't say they have bsi or the best burst performance, they have a sub 2k FF body with features not found in any other camera, like star tracking and pixel shift.

Nikon have no new ideas, no modern development team, their optics team just rehash old designs, they dead.

You can sort of tell Thom is in strawgrasping territory when he involves the inclusion of battery charger.
When you are at the point the Sony 3rd gen are at and the battery last all day, all you need is the USB charger cable.
Whereas when you are using the Nikon, you need multiple batteries through the day, meaning you have to carry along multiple batteries and a charger. This is actually a massive advantage for the Sony system that you only need a USB cable for charging overnight in your bag.

The claim of higher framerate doesn't take into account that Sony has higher 14-bit framerate. So he is also technically wrong there.

AMD has particularly strong roots to Globalfoundries, as the foundry's manufacturing was designed and fine-tuned specifically for AMD's CPU products. Their entire existence depends on orders from AMD itself.
There are multiple aspects to consider under this subject. Companies like AMD, Nvidia, Qualcomm are large enough to employ their own design teams.
And they would need to be, because CPU logic is a completely different game than CMOS image sensors.
AMD is to Globalfoundries, like Sony Imaging is to Sony Semiconductors.

Something more relevant to the current discussion of espionage:
Pic related is from the past, but still relevant to this day, the Nvidia CEO specifically said: "No, _that_ belongs to AMD" when he rejected Globalfoundries.
You see, CPU design is utterly different from image sensor design. And they simply couldn't risk having a Globalfoundry engineer chatting randomly to an AMD engineer under a cup of coffee.
In the camera business you can run such risks because the CMOS chip isn't all that complex.
But in the CPU/GPU business that's a bad deal.

Well USB charging is fine and dandy but I wish A7iii (as well as every other USB-charging camera it seems like) didn't take 3.5 hours to charge. I don't understand why a Sony phone with a 3000 mAh cell can charge itself in an hour while a Sony camera with two 2300 mAh cells needs four times longer.

It just depends on what amperage your wallplug converter can provide. Some are 1 amp, some are 2 amps, some are more, some are less than 1 amp.
An actual charger just means more shit in your bag, whereas a wallplugger with USB can charge both your phone and your camera.

Besides how the hell is 1 charger going to help you if your camera needs multiple batteries overnight? It's far better to have low power hardware that only use 1 battery and charge that overnight.

You're not gonna drain a battery in under 4 hours, so why does it matter if your spare takes that long? I keep 2 spares, dual charger and a power pack in my kit bag. Plenty for 48 hours of shooting, even in the middle of the bush.

Phones charge quick as they are designed to be upgraded every 2 years, with shortening battery being the #1 driver of purchases.
