>>3349643>>3349528Daido has evolved his style a lot to be honest, and yeah it's impressive that he's still doing what he does at 79, including the drinking and constant chain smoking. Just look at his magazine work, Playboy stuff, then the Bye Bye Photography era, and then the stuff he got into after he got off drugs and started photographing again. His color work is very different too. Definitely one of the masters, even though in that genre (and Provoke crew) I think Takuma Nakahira is the better photographer.
I mean huge numbers is a given, if you're a street snapper your keeper rate is not going to be that great, even if you're one of the masters. Back when Daido was teaching photography at a university, he'd tell students to shoot 100 rolls per month and that that if those numbers were impossible to reach, it would probably be better for them to give up on trying to become a pro photographer.
Gilden has a lot of great work too, the recent Face stuff I'm personally not a fan of either, but I mean judging his whole body of work based on that is just stupid. His style is his style and he's very good at it - that's why he's been in Magnum for 20 years and won quite a few awards.
Street photography is a niche style with it's own fans, and street photographers themselves rarely do well in other genres, so I'm not surprised if Gilden shot some food and it looked like shit. I don't know anything about that either and I'm not interested in it at all. I think that to many people who aren't that deep into street photography it's probably like a dadrocker trying to listen to mumblerap or Merzbow - just sounds like shit comparing it to what you believe to be the definition of good.
