- Post at peak times
- Content is varied but consistent
- Post 5 times a week
- Always like and follow relevant people during the day

I do all this shit and everyday I lose more followers. I was at 150 at one point and now I’m down to below 90. What the fuck is going on?

Do I need to follow back everyone that follows me?

"general photographer instagrams" aren't very popular unless you're photographing things that are generally very expensive to photograph. like amazing travel destinations, or 10/10 models.
having too much variation will actually hold you back. you want to go for a theme or a niche and pump it. if your content is too all over the place there's no way you'll be a suggested account to follow when somebody follows somebody else.
i post a pic on my insta = 100 likes
the model i took posts the same pic on her insta = 10k likes

OP here, On my insta I do fashion photography, architectural photography, occasional snowsports photography and travel photography. I also do a little bit of digital art and motion graphics

Is that too much?

I was thinking I should be doing big blocks of 9 posts about specific things, say 9 posts about snowsports, 9 posts about fashion and so on. At the moment I do 3 so each row is a different topic

What are you doing wrong? That's the wrong question at this stage.

First, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? For who? Is this thing you want to accomplish really the end goal in and of itself, or is it tied to some other thing you want?

That's way to much. You'd be better off to start a separate account for each topic. Here's why you're losing followers: People see a nice shot you posted and are interested in that specific topic (e.g. fashion). Next time you post some architecture shot and maybe get a new follower. The follower who was into your fashion stuff however unfollows you. This way you cannot grow. Find out what most of your audience likes and focus on that.

It’s one part publicity and one part personal development. First and foremost I’d like to create a portfolio that presents my work nicely. The reason for being on instagram is not only is the work easy to access, potential clients can theoretically see that my work is being engaged by a wider community which builds credibility.

Unfortunately, snowsports photos absolutely kicks the shit out of everything else I do. I’ll net 80-90ish likes for each skiing or snowboarding photo, compared to the 20-30ish for fashion stuff. Problem is snowsports photography is totally unsustainable, I’m only able to go and get photos for it twice a year and only end up with maybe 3 good ones.

It's really sad to say, boys are the only way to get new people to discover you on IG. The way IG works now is based on monetizing for advertising. So it actively works against their user base to minimize the ability for its users to organically gain new followers. They do this so you now rely on purchasing ads to gain followers. Pic related is impressions (basically means how many people see the post) notice only about 1-2% of all the views come from hashtags, that's next to nothing. I bot my account and that's really the only guaranteed way of gaining new followers without spending money unfortunately.

You need to separate what is personal work and just for fun from what you're putting out there to the world.

One guy I know has an account for his portraits/personal work and another is purely just his commercial work of weddings and comparatively much uglier people / subjects. His commercial page makes him all of his money but his personal work page has like 30x the followers and it's clear he enjoys working on it much more.

Like, why do you need to post your travel shots on Insta? Find other social media channels for that. Maybe a Flickr. Or your personal FB Profile set to Public.
Or take them and actually try to make money off them on a stock website.

Personally I use a Facebook Page for my personal business. There's a lot of pictures I post on my Facebook that I don't post on Instagram.

Like, if your snowsports photography is fantastic you don't want it side by side your pictures of ugly people that paid you to do it.
Separate that stuff, whether it's through multiple instagram accounts or different social media channels or something.
Maybe try using your Instagram Story for your more disposable stuff.
