I think the 100-150mm range is best, if you have the working distance you can back up far enough with. I use 128mm f/2 myself.

you cant zoom with your feet, you can only change perspective.
Zoom happens by a change in angle of view which is done by changing focal length or equivalent focal length by cropping.

85 is more versatile and easier to use, better if you're either not sure about your portraiture yet or in need of a lens that will always give you the right composition even if you're in tighter spaces.

135 is more pleasing, but space becomes a real constraint in many situations.

I would go always for a 135. I've used 85s, 100's and 135's. I currently have a 135mm 1.8 Sigma and I love it, but I had a couple of occasions where I couldn't get the frame I wanted because I was just 15cm too close to the subject and I had no extra room.

Will you shoot in a big studio (in terms of space at your disposal)? Then get the 135.

Do you want to shoot spontaneous portraits (like street-portraits, family, ...)? Get the 85.

85mm f2 with minimum focus distance of 85 cm, weight 260g, OR 100mm f2 with mfd 70 cm, weight 500g. Sizes proportionate to weight.
Cost ratio 1:2, but shouldn't be a deciding factor.

I've got a friend willing to sell me his barely-used Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM for $200. Seems like it'd hit the sweet spot for portraits between 85 and 135. Or would the 2.8 limit the usefulness? What do you fags think?
