get a lens hood
put the cover on the optical viewfinder when you're not using it because light will leak in otherwise
"straighten" tool in nikon capture nx-d (i don't know which other software has it - i don't think gimp has one of the same caliber and it's better to apply it to the raw file anyway)
retouch brush in nikon capture-nx-d (super easy to use and has great results)
if you're doing still photography, mount your camera on a tripod and use loooooooong exposure time with low ISO
