Most modern cameras have a histogram function. That's that little graph you see in
>>3360495The way you read this is, left to right is brightness level (black on the left, white on the right). Up and down is number of pixels. So if you see a peak at the right side that then goes down before it hits the edge of the graph, like in that lighthouse histogram, you've successfully exposed to the right. If the peak goes up and then hits the wall without coming back down, you've gone too far and clipped your highlights beyond recovery.
If you don't like histograms, a lot of cameras also have a feature where you can turn on a clipping warning, where the parts of the image that are detail-destroyingly white will flash at you when you're in review mode, then you can just dial down the exposure slightly and try again.
