Flash use.
I was going trough some Vivian Maier photos because she´s a meme. But I saw pic related and the flash seems very even. How does one pull that off? Sorry if this is supposed to go in the gear thread.

If you want to achieve the same light, you want one of those godox speedlights with bare bulb option.

Seems she used a bulb adapter with her rollei. If I use a regular speedlight with a remote can I get similar results or do I still need the diffuser?

Speedlights have a tiny as fuck bulb, really harsh, even when diffused through their heads.

You need either a Godox AD360 or a Godox AD200 with the bulb adapter. Maybe a 180 too but I can't really see them for sale.

OP's shot is clearly shot with a proper flash bulb without any sort of modifier on it. Literally just a bulb blowing in free air.

We can tell there's no modifiers as the light clearly radiates from a point source and leaves harsh shadows, a modifier would either give softer shadows or more directional light.

Sure, but it's not cheap, go look up bare bulb strobes.

How did they time pressing the shutter and activating the flash at the same time back then?
I see a wire attaching the camera to the flash: presumably this was a totally mechanical mechanism?
How was it so fast?

When the shutter is activated it closes an electrical loop that runs through the flash cable.

You actually have quite a lot of wiggle room. Don't forget, your flash just has to fire at any moment while your shutter is open. You have a pretty wide window there and analog gear was more than good enough to match it for sync speeds back then.
