It's the *exact* same argument and mental gymnastics of every Nazi sympathiser in any country ruined by the Germans.
Usually it goes like this:
"Hitler actually DIDN'T want to kill us. He RESECTED us and wanted us to fight along his side. Here, look at this obscure quote of Hitler after the battle, about how valiantly we fought.
But OUR TRAITOR POLITICIANS were sell-outs and sided with the allies against all reason. That FORCED Hitler to begrudgingly wage war on us. Things would've been so much better if we had fought along his side!"
Substitute even an *allied* country, and it works. You'll find a modern day nazi sympathiser in that country arguing along the same words. Czechoslovakia, Greece, Netherlands, Luxembourg, etc. .
Even more so for nazi collaborators like Ukraine, Finland, Austria etc.
You though siding with a much worse enemy, just for a piece of Karelia, was a good strategy. Here's the difference: In reality, the Soviets wanted Karelia and a legal commie party to shill in Finland, the Germans wanted to exterminate you.
If you weren't germanic, they wanted you dead or enslaved and worked to death. That's it, no special plans. You're not germanic, you don't deserve to live.
They only considered the Brits for cooperation on equal terms. Everybody else (excluding germanics in northern europe) just didn't matter.
