Use an optical viewfinder. It's a fixed prime lens with autofocus, why would you need anything beyond knowing the framelines?

Really I can live without a viewfinder just fine, but really no flash wtf Ricoh? I use it all of the time. I want to see the IBIS freeze motion at a diy hardcore gig on a 1/2 second shutter...

And instead of a touchscreen a focus nipple would’ve been better, but at least it’s better than the old way of setting the focus point... and I guess improved AF is at least something, I shoot a lot of closeups with the GR and the AF really struggles with them.

All in all I’m sticking with my Aps-c GRI and waiting to see if Fuji does an X70S

People keep repeating this, but the dust does not enter through the lens. It's impossible, the lens and the sensor are pretty much completely sealed off from each other.
Dust gets in through gaps in the GR's body, mostly the control dials and a hole underneath the flash. Open it up and you can see it yourself.

Get a, "VEK0V37Z1-A" for $50. Just double check the hotshoe connectors on the GR III to make sure it will work. I know the older GRs don't have all four connectors, but I think they have the ones the flash above needs (red circle one for instance). The older GRs seem to be missing the lower right connector.

It does with any zoom lenses and retractable lenses. They act as air pumps sucking in and pushing out air. If they didn't it would be like air shocks and couldn't be retracted. Dust gets sucked in with the air, into the body chamber then when the shutter is opened it can land on the sensor. In order to prevent that from happening, you'd need the sensor and shutter to be in a sealed section with a piece of glass acting as a barrier for the sensor to look through. Air exchange as the camera changes the lens zoom or extends/retracts the lens will happen in front of the barrier glass. The only cleaning you'd need to do would be on the barrier glass.

I don't know of any camera that has such a sealed chamber with barrier glass like that. If you want a dust free sensor, you'll need to get a weatherized camera with body seals, lens seals, and weatherized a pancake prime lens. Or, you could get the weatherized camera then epoxy your own barrier glass into it where a mirror or lens back wouldn't hit it. Any type of barrier glass will have problems with flare/glare, F-stop reduction, reflections, and other imperfections you get when adding another element to the lens system.

Like in the GR, you mean?

The hot mirror literally seals off the lens from the body. See pic related.

I recently disassembled my GR completely and tons of dust had entered through the gaps I mentioned. The lens compartment itself didn't contain a single spec, it was impeccably clean.

No menus needed, you could control everything you'd need to instantly. Good quick phase AF, viewfinder with reticle and all the information you need (none of what you don't), and slimmer than digital GR's. Also has a flash.

Not seriously enough IMO

I absolutely love my GR, but looking at the interior of the camera, they could've easily put some gaskets underneath the flash, the front wheel and the ISO rocker. Maybe not good enough for complete weather proofing, but I'm sure it would prevent 90% of the dust issues people have, or at least make it occur less often. The inside of my camera around those places was dusty like an old PC, even though I had already cleaned it 6 months earlier.

That's for me the most frustrating thing about Ricoh, they're so close to perfection with the GR, but for some reason they just won't go that extra distance.

Doesn't the GR have some kind of af confirm light or sound? My DP2 did.

Either shoot in an auto or priority mode, or simply know your camera and lighting well enough to only make measurements once every so often and go up or down a stop by feeling. With raw you can't really get exposure wrong unless you're a complete moron.

The settings are the same as the last time you looked, unless you changed them.

SLR viewfinders aren't 100% accurate either. Having a hotshoe optical viewfinder is even better than a standard rangefinder one, since you don't have any side to side paralax.

If you know your camera and know to change each setting by feel as the light changes, and if it focused correctly by the sound it makes, shooting with an optical hotshoe viewfinder is a blissful experience. Nothing but the framelines between you and your perfect composition.

EVFs are. They also show precise and accurate focus and depth of field including peaking, offer exposure preview with zebra stripes for overexposure and histograms, show any settings you could possibly want to know, and you can even review images.

I honestly don't get why compact cameras dont just out a phase sensor above the sensor, instead of half assing some contrast detect system, on sensor, that moves at a snails pace.

Sure it might go out of alingment, but this is not a cheap product, people will get it fixed, maybe even allow a simple user calibration?

The fact that it doesn’t have a flash and the assumption that they did the bare minimum market research. And the fact that higher end cameras frequently don’t have a built-in flash, and this camera is aimed at the same sort of photographer.

An on-camera flash is nice to have, but they’re usually only used by people who don’t really know what they’re doing, since the quality of light you get with them tends to look very amateurish. Pro photographers certainly do use them sometimes, but mainly when they’re just deliberately going for an amateurish look (eg, uncle Terry and other photographers who go for the “snapshot æsthetic”). Serious photographers are more likely to go with available light or use off camera flash. Really, this is a camera almost laser focused towards appealing to classic street photographers, and the only one of them I can think of who uses flash uses it off camera on a wire (Bruce Gilden).

So I don’t have a direct source per se, but as someone who’s been a photography and camera nerd pretty hardcore for over a decade, it fits with everything I know.

You people sure do whine about dust a lot, I've been using mine for more than 5 years now and it's still fine. There's maybe a couple of specks of dust you can see if you shoot a photo of a blank white wall at f/11.

Even if it was full frame there's a lot to be said for 24mp. Namely dynamic range and iso performance when utilising the same generation of sensor tech.
Using a lower megapixel count sensor would let them drive up dynamic range and have the better ISO performance compensate for a slower lens which would also let them make the lens for cheaper. It would be a smart thing to do even if it was full frame desu.

And i'm missing shit ton of cams as well. Fast lens and large sensors are common and fairly affordable now. rx shills were expecting revolution as was the first one, they got gimped rx ii, with slightly better mp on the sensor.

The 1 inch sensor in a recent RX100 model performs closely to the larger and lower resolution APS-C sensor in a GR II. The fact that they removed the built-in flash to make the GR even smaller should clue you in. People just don't get it. Look at premium film compact cameras, that's where GR is coming from (the film GRs predecessors were literally premium compact cameras).

X100 series are fucking NOTHING like the GR series. Fuji hasn't made a premium digital compact camera anywhere near the GR. The X100 series are modelled after rangefinders with manual control dials, non-retracting lenses, and optical viewfinders.

Now if Fuji decided to make a digital version of their Klasse premium compact, that would seriously fuck the GR's market niche.

As for the other cameras you listed, they are completely different category.

Dust was primarily getting in through the gap under the pop-up flash. Plus no one was using it, I'm sure Ricoh have done more market research than some assclowns on 4chan who haven't used any GR camera in their lives and just like to complain about specs.
