Who here repairs their own shit?

Got a used Samyang/Rokinon Cine lens for a good price but noticed that the focus ring gets stiffer on one side. Is this an easy DIY fix or do I have to take it to a repait shop?

Helicoid is propably plastic, no amount of skilled labour is going to make it as smooth as a brass one. Use it more on the stiff end and it'll wear out.

I’ve heard it gets worse. I’ve read some dude tried it and it got completely stiff...don’t know the ligic behind it tho.
Heard that heat might help it.

I live in the middle of nowhere, so any repair costs me to begin with $35 on shippings, plus whatever the actual service is. not cost effective on 85% of the shit I buy that needs servicing so I give it a shot at trying to repair it myself. I've been able to fix a bunch of stuff and whatever goes over me just sits on a box until a trip makes it possible to get it to the camera shop.

had that problem with a minolta lens, focus ring was stiff at the close focus part. turned out the filter ring was the problem. I was taking it apart when I notice half way throught that the focus right got smooth all around and I haven't even reached the helicoid. found out the filter ring was the culprit. overtightening it down stiffened the focus at one end. screwed it down gently but firmly and it's butter smooth now. it got probably slightly bent out of shape by a hit.

As someone who opens lenses from time to time, I highly advise that you don't do it unless you have all the tools needed just to open and close it properly. This is the type of stuff you do while recording everything being taken apart. Things vary from lens to lens, but you can expect shit like micro springs popping out and landing "somewhere", a dozen micro ball bearings to fall out and never ever get back in correctly, focusing ring threads to be misaligned, inadvertently causing an oil leak/oil capillary migration, soft metal/plastic parts wearing out simply because you are gently taking it apart/putting it back together properly (sacrifice parts designed to break and be replaced every time it is taken apart so that you are forced to send it in for a $5 part repair costing $100s,) and horror of horrors the elements suddenly falling out and getting flipped and mixed together.

As >>3371049 states in the last sentence, tolerances for many of the things inside these lenses are really tight. The slightest ding, even without seeing anything wrong, can make everything go out of whack. Figuring that out and getting it to return to true shape is a monumental task sometimes.

I took apart a Rokinon 80-200mm lens once, wasn't really that big of a deal although some of the screws were absolutely tiny and I managed to get grease on my douchebulb rendering it unusable. It wasn't a terribly complex lens but as long as you mark what goes where and keep the orientation in check you shouldn't have an issue.

The felt strip beneath the ring probably folded. If you can carefully disassemble the reassemble than it is doable.
Get a set of JIS screwdriver set and be extra careful for springs and tiny ball bearing balls if there are any. Also photo every layer and step and mark orientations so you can assemble it without guessing which hole went to which.

I don't think there are any if it's the cine model (No aperture clicks)

If you want to see lots of balls just disassemble a OM Zuiko 35-70 f3.6, rumor says there are 120 bearing balls in the zoom mechanism. I had one and wouldn't dare touch it, just took some elements off to clean haze. Also the OG Canon FD lenses have a ball bearing aperture stop mechanism but thankfully they are designed not to release easily.

The last lens I opened had a ring of ball bearings for one section. They are ungodly tiny bastards too. It didn't click either. The clickers use only 1 ball bearing to do that. The worst part is when there's a ton of ball bearings and they stick to the side you are lifting up then suddenly break loose and a shower of ball bearings goes all over the place. I got to the point where I take apart the lens inside a cake pan with magnets under it. Anything that drops out suddenly is caught by the pan. Though, that doesn't help to catch those tiny ass brass springs that can fly out.

you can bet your ass Samyang doesn't have any balls in it, apart from the one in the aperture mechanism to give it clicky click. I took apart my 12mm f2.8 fisheye to adjust its focus since it couldn't reach infinity, luckily it was an easy fix with a 0.1mm spacer in front of the last lens group.

I dealt with one spacer ring that thick a few days ago. It was broken and was stuck to both pieces that I was pulling apart due to oil everywhere. It sprung half way across the room before I even knew what it was doing. I found it, got it back in and all is fine now. It made me sweat though.

well, it was actually very un-technical, since the only thing that needed to be opened was the lens mount and its contacts. the adjustable lens group was literally unscrewed and the spacer dropped in. that's it. of course I didn't know it at the time and also opened the aperture mechanism and the fucking tiny ball bearing went awol. had to scour my carpet with a magnet to find it.

technically though, when adjusting the distances between lens groups, you are also messing with the optical formula, but 0.1mm isn't that much in that context.

as for your original issue, this happens either when the cam barrel gets damaged, or the focus ring itself. The slightest dent or bend will cause this. I dont really recommend servicing your own lens, but a samyang may not be so bad since its fully manual. if you *really* wanna try (which i dont recommend), you could try removing the focus ring and seeing if it still tightens up. Really someone familiar with the specific lens is better to answer this

Is there a trick to repair the infamous Canon squeal on A1, AE1 etc.? I put way too much of oil and it leaked a bit to the side of the mirrorbox, but it stopped squeaking and no problems yet.

Recently, I bought a Canon EF with bad shutter speeds, they all seem very, very fast. I am hoping its just the linkage from the little iso cable, but I am not that experienced. What could be the problem?

ever worked on a Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm lens (made by cosina)? I have one with an oil slick in the aperture but haven't figured out a way to reach the blades. rear element group doesn't seem to unscrew out.

Currently working on a Kodak Folding Brownie no.3 (120) trying to fix the sliding mechanism (camera opens but i cant extend the bellows) and trying to get the lens to fire properly. seemed to work ok at first, but attempting to use the T function broke it

Any time a new shutter or main-board is installed, the shutter speed needs to be calibrated. This is done using internal use only software that few people if anyone have access to outside of canon. you can try searching pirate bay, but dont count on it

if your camera has ever had its shutter or mainboard replaced by anypne who doesnt have access to this software, your shutter speeds are almost certainly going to be not correct. I am speaking about models from the Digital Rebel on, I am not familiar with anything earlier

so, what about a nikon af 28-105mm macro d lens? thinking of picking up one for a good price but front element has some fungus behind. wondering if I can just get the spanner wrench and unscrew that front stepped ring off and pop out the front glass to clean it up, or if such a job is more involved than that?

If you just have to unscrew the front to get the lens off, you should be fine. If after removing the ring you find there are screws holding the lens on, just watch for spacers used for optical alignment. That lens doesnt look like it is setup like that, but if it is, make sure all spacers go back to their original locations

Here's the most common cause of shutter failure on Canon 20D and 30D; a metal spring switch, which fatigues and breaks, resulting in a shutter error. Though we could easily replace just the broken piece, it isn't available as its own individual part, so you replace the whole shutter, which is only like a $30 part anyway, if that.
