Here is another also shot with Portra 400 and desaturated. The texture of the paper is really being picked up by the scanner but isn't as white flecked in the print. I have a coating rod being sent which will give me a more even coating next time than the brush.

Man, don't make me dig up my old Nettar. The slow ass lens woth scale focus only and three shutter speeds+bulb made it so damn limited but also weirdly fun to shoot. Also I really love how portable it was, especially compared to my fat ass Bronica.

Dumping some old Nettar shots from my Madeira trip, film was FP4+ I believe.

Impusle buy bc only $20 + 12 rolls of kodak gold. The 35-135 is busted but the 75-300mm is in great shape. I've never used a lens tighter than 50mm so this'll be an interesting experience. Might get a 40mm pancake if I end up liking this camera

Love me some folders.

I have a Bessa 66 with a color-skopar that is tiny and shoots some amazingly sharp pictures.
The only problem I have with it is that the flip-up finder it uses makes properly composing shots very hard. Especially with glasses. And there's no accessory shoe to add another finder.

Not who you're replying to, but making your own bellows is easier said than done. The main issue is sourcing the right materials.
I tried making my own bellows for an old folder of mine a while ago and while the final bellows looked fine it developed pinholes almost immediately.
Maybe I'll try again someday.
Sadly probably not with the ADOX Golf pictured because when I was taking it apart again to remove one of the screws broke and won't come out anymore.

Just got an Epson v550 yesterday for my medium format stuff. I like it so far and it's making me want to shoot more MF film since my local dev charges the same price for 35mm, 120, and 220.

Also r8 my pic. Took this on Ektar 100 with a Mamiya C220. Scanned with my v550.

If it's just pinholes, you can easily fix those with Plasti-Dip (I've even repaired cloth shutters with that stuff).

I think it’s .27x but it’s only approximate because the aspect ratio is different so it doesn’t feel at all like 35mm in composition. Only really matters for depth of field calculations so that you understand the need to go to f/22 or above pretty often.

The 6x7 back is a bit annoying but most 4x5 cameras will have the 6x7 crop marked on the ground glass. The “back” is really more like a film holder that slides under the ground glass with a lever to advance it. Really, I use it not to save film but to get telephoto shots without having to get a telephoto lens. It basically doubles the crop factor so my slightly long-normal 210 becomes a rather long lens (probably close to a 135mm in 35mm-equivalence). I personally don’t use it too often because I feel that 120mm covers wide situations pretty well without distortion and 210 covers normal-long situations. Only lens I could really see myself adding is probably a good 75mm, but so far I haven’t had a really need.

8x10 is where it get started interesting. I shoot that too and the crop factor is .13x so it’s always a battle of depth of field vs diffraction limits. And in that case a 4x5 reduction back comes into play and is much like a 4x5->6x7 reduction

Honestly I have shot 4x5 wide open or close, before. In fact I find that it gives a strong “3D” effect to the subject in focus that smaller formats have trouble executing well. I know in 35mm land they refer to this as 3D pop of certain lenses that separate foreground and background well, but in 4x5 large format this comes naturally below f/11. With 8x10 though it is a bit extreme and unmanageable unless people or things are absolutely still

I'm going between Vuescan and the Epson scanning software.

Not sure what's causing your issue though. The colors I'm getting are spot on with default settings for my slides. For the negatives (specifically >>3378187 ) I scan it into a .tiff file and manipulate it in Photoshop.

Picked up a five roll pack each of Fuji Pro 160, Pro 400H, and some Portra 400 for my new 6x4.5 body.

Unfortunately I also discovered my prism meter is busted. Trying to decide if it’s worth the extra hundred or two to replace it, or if my phone will do.

You’d be surprised how worthy a phone meter is for tripod photography. I use mine constantly for large format and I seem to expose things correctly almost all the time. Some of the light meter apps allow you to click where on the screen/pic you want to meter for so that’s pretty helpful too. But that depends on what camera you’re shooting. If it’s handheld, nothing is more annoying than a broken meter. Outdoors it’s fine but makes indoors a hellscape

It is an ETRSi I got for a steal.

I am going to shoot handheld outside for the most part. Tripods are banned in many places here, and I can’t be bothered to carry one anyway.

I figure I can probably get away with setting shutter speed from the phone meter and leaving it at that unless the lighting changes. I just don’t wanna spend another $100-200 for an AEII meter.

For 35mm, Fuji Superia Premium 400. It's rather grainy, but I can't get enough of its saturation and contrast. For 120 it's Pro 400H. Don't bother with 160NS, it just has less saturation and weaker contrast for marginally smaller grain you won't even notice when scanning with a shitbed. Portras look boring, but pick 400 over 160 if you have to. Ektar can be awesome but it is very situational.

Just picked up an Epson v550 to scan my MF film.

Got curious as to what 35mm looked like on it so I scanned a Provia 100f slide to compare my v550 to my Nikon LS-2000 that I've had for awhile.

Left is the v550 and the right is the LS-2000.

My LS-2000 is absolute shit compared the v550 in this pic. Move up to the girl's hair though and the LS-2000 looks sharper than the v550.

What's up here? Is the film not lying flat on the scanner or is something wrong with the LS-2000?

v550 is clearly the winner here (purely because it's consistent) but wtf is making the LS-2000 focus properly in one area and not focus properly in the other? I'm thinking it's just because the scanner is old as shit and it's not working properly anymore.

Superia 400 is a fine choice though. Very forgiving and there are plenty of professionals that use it despite being a "consumer" film.

It literally doesn't matter since your first roll will probably suck. Superia is cheap and handles overexposure well which is good since old film cameras often have slow shutters. Underexposure tends to give it a green hue which I don't care for so don't do that unless you want to.

Best lens you'll find on any cheap rangefinder, by far, and one of the best lenses on a non-interchangeable lens camera, period. It's fantastic.

It's a bit on the large side though, but quite comfy if you have big hands.

Alright, I just copped 3 rolls, wish me luck. I was originally going to get portra 400 because I have a Nikkormat FT but only AF-D lenses so no metering, and I read that portra has heaps of latitude so you can just overexpose it to shit, but then I saw that a single roll costs $14 where I live while a bundle of 3 superia 400 24 rolls is $16.

Fug, that one would have been even cheaper, $16 for 3 rolls of 36. It's all good though, the camera shop I got it from has a deal where you get a free replacement roll every time you get one processed, and the guy said the replacement is always 36 frames of the same film stock you send in.

Prism actually seems to function, but always leans toward overexposure. Taking a look at it from the bottom, it looks like there is corrosion on the sensor.

What does medium format offer to you personally, /fgt/?

Asking due to curiosity. I’ve had a decent 6x7 kit for close to two years now but I still prefer to shoot 35mm over 90% of the time. I don’t tend to print bigger than contact sheet size (so 24x30cm) and I feel like 35mm still handles that quite easily, at least with rangefinder lenses. So the only difference would be shallower depth of field and noticeably less grain, and those don’t matter much to me. I guess I can scan medium format better on a flatbed though and the aspect ratio of 6x7 is nice. So carrying the over twice heavier medium format kit is just not worth it most of the time.

I haven't shot anything 35mm since I got a 6x7 setup but the novelty is wearing off and I want to add in a 35mm camera again for snapshots.

Hey guys, first time ever on this board. Been dealing with some personal shit and looking to get into this as hobby to get my mind off of things.

Does anyone here have a Nikon FE 35mm, and would you recommend it to someone who has literally never done anything like this before?

It comes with a Soligor Macro 28-80mm, which I also know nothing about.

I plan on doing a lot of reading to get into this as an introductory but need something to practice with before i really sink my teeth into something expensive.

If it's an FE + a meh third party zoom don't pay more than $90, but I'd stretch it out to $110 in todays market. Ditch the zoom and get yourself an E series 50mm 1.8 prime, great lens optically despite the build quality (still great but all plastic except mount). The FE is a wonderful camera, alike most of Nikon's offerings save for the EM (avoid at all costs). You'll have a lotta fun man!

get it. The Nikon FE is one of the few nikon SLR's that lets you mount non-ai lenses. Has needle metering before LCD metering came out. Can be operated without batteries at 1/60 sec. Was my first SLR before I got an F3.

you can add a meter coupling prong (that metal piece that looks like bunny ears atop older nikon lenses) to the aperture ring of AF-D lenses to get them to meter on nikkormats and pre-AI nikons. the D lenses even have two guide holes around 5.6 where the prong can be installed.

I need to whip out my 645afd, I initially didn't like it, because I prefer completely manual (RB67s) when shooting MF, but I shot some Ektar on the 645 and the look is almost 3D.

How long do you leave your batteries in your camera?

My point and shoot I think is fine without them in because it has a mechanical frame counter. My medium format runs off a watch battery when it doesn't have the AAs in and IDK how long the watch battery lasts (granted I write all my shots and ISO for that in a notebook so if the frame number was lost I guess it would be OK

Read the manual, it probably has an estimate on how long the batteries will last in terms of the number of rolls with X exposures per roll. My X-370 has an estimated 100 rolls at 24 exposures IIRC but you will have to adjust this depending on the type of battery you use. Older cameras want mercury batteries that last longer than modern ones but you can buy premium silver oxide ones that last longer than the common alkaline equivalents. Of course this will vary heavily if the batteries also power a built in flash but my camera has a battery check so I don't fret. Some cameras have power saving functions while some are "always on" which makes it hard to give a general estimate.

The medium format says "Remove batteries when not using equipment for a long time. Batteries may tend to leak if left too long in your equipment and may cause serious damage". Granted I just left the batteries in the grip of that medium format camera since like February or March. Before that when I got the camera the battery compartment was all corroded out and the tabs were all fucked and I needed to replace it with a new one to get it to work. It says in the manual that the original watch battery should last 5 years and to send it to pentax if it dies (but I put a new watch battery in it when I got it because the old one was dead)

ask your analog camera tech for the bunny ears conversion. they get the prong machined and bent from a piece of steel and install it for around $25.
or if you're crafty, you can get the piece machined at a local workshop for a few bucks and install it yourself. however, the existing guide "holes" on the lens are just marks, you need to carefully drill a little to get the screw to actually thread in, and you also need to get short screws that won't go past the aperture ring and hit the lens's body

pic related, you can see the guide marks between the larger and smaller f4 and f8 on the aperture ring

Also I just found out that you can meter hy holding down the depth of field preview button, I guess I'll just order batteries for the meter and try it like that first. Hopefully it's not too inconvenient/cumbersome although I do have a nasty feeling that I won't be able to see the meter at f/8 and above.

nah, it has plenty of space to accomodate the rabbit ears, you can leave them in place. after all, many people use AI and AI-s lenses with ears on their D8xx. or you can take them off, it's just a piece of metal screwed down on plastic that doesn't otherwise interact with newer bodies in any way. just keep in mind that the aperture ring plastic might get stripped if you mess with it quite often. it's not metal like on older lenses.
and yeah, stop down metering gets a bit annoying with some needle type meters under some lighting conditions at high f numbers, but it's usable just fine, as long as you remember to press the DoF lever.

also, I heard it only works on BW negatives, not color negs. is that true?

Don't forget a stable tripod that keeps the camera perfectly perpendicular to the film, an even, matte light source, a decent macro lens (with little field curvature) and some kind of film holder that keeps the film flat enough (or spend lots on a sheet of AN glass).

Yes, the quality you can get is potentially higher than most dedicated scanners, but in my experience "DSLR scanning" is a lot more hassle than people generally make it out to be here on /p/, even when you've found a setup that works. I can really undertstand why many would rather just get a Plustek.
I think with all the money I've spent on improving my own setup it would've even been cheaper.

I actually got back my first box of Provia 100F and I kinda almost think I’ll prefer it to Velvia 100. Provia has such a nice dark indigo cast in the shadow details, It’s really quite pleasant and almost makes me want to underexpose half a stop on purpose more often. Velvia doesn’t seem to be able to handle that underexposure as beautifully, though correctly exposed Velvia i find nicer than correctly exposed provia

3/3 for now, a bit of semi-macro 4x5 photography. Saw this guy on a fence near a bigger scene and wanted to try out the shot. This isn’t even 1:1, he was a pretty large spider just hanging there and occasionally wrapping flies up, he was probably twice the size he is in the negative.

Forgot to mention, in the first shot you can see small branches on the trees far in the distance and in the second shot you can see in the shadow of the fence individual dew drops and even an insect on the blades of grass very clearly, all the way until the middle of the fence’s bend where it is out of focus (tilted focus to get a maximum amount of fence as possible in focus, couldn’t get the middle in focus and wanted to keep diffraction low so I only stopped down to f/16)

There are 17 more shots but I didn’t feel like holding them all up to a light and I feel it’s rude to post more than 3 snapshits a thread

Started getting into scanning since I got a Minolta Scan Dual 2 for like 10 bucks. I know theres better out there but hey I got a dedicated scanner for next to nothing.
First few scans were b/w pretty easy and cool. First colornegative was pretty accurate too, and only required minimal tweaking in PS.
But that last roll had this greencast all over. Didn't change any of the settings from the roll that worked well before. If you look at the pic, left is scanned with the Minolta software (which did fine before) right is scanned with vuescan. Anybody know how this happens?

The cheapest adapter I've found was on eBay, seller 'pratedthai' IIRC, works perfectly fine and uses SR44 batteries which last ages. Over time much cheaper than zinc/weincell batteries.

The optimal solution would be to simply add a zener diode in the battery circuit. This is exactly what a camera repairman would do. Not that hard if you're not scared to use a screwdriver and a soldering iron.
Bought 50 diodes from China for peanuts ages ago and have used about 20 in different cameras since. An additional advantage is battery modified cameras often sell quicker and for more.

How usable would they be? I know fuji 400 H and portra 400 can handle crazy exposures like +5, but I couldn't find anything about superia 400. The worst offenders on these rolls would be about 3.5 stops overexposed while the rest are probably between +2 and +3. First time shooting film and I fucked up and forgot to change the rating dial. Thankfully I have one more roll left though.

The resolution difference is absolutely insane, and means tat I can actually get good enough scans from a flatbed to print in large sizes. Also the flexibility offered by system cameras is pretty essential to me. Finally I find the 3:2 ratio of 35mm quite awkward as it doesn’t really fit anything; I much prefer 1:1, 4:5 or the panoramic formats you can easily achieve by stitching.

It's pretty easy, for most cameras you just have to get access to the battery chamber and add a diode in the circuit there. Often the most difficult bit is finding a place for the diode to fit.

Yeah I'm looking through tutorials of it and it seems pretty easy. Not so sure about the diode though, some suggest a Germanium diode while others suggest a Schottky type. Not sure what the implications here are.

Yeah, the different diode types are a bit confusing. I looked up a bunch of them a few years back. They all have very slight differences on the discharge curve of the battery in different temperatures etc.

The diodes I settled on were 1N6263. IIRC these were also used by a bunch of camera repairmen, including John Hermanson (_the_ CLA guy for Olympus OM cameras).
In every camera I've used them in so far they've done the job perfectly.

Haven't used 50D nor 800T for that matter. People really only use 800T because of it's speed and tungsten balanced for night shots there's not many other emulsion that offer this. 50D on the other hand is just 50 ISO daylight film, nothing you couldn't achieve with cheaper emulsions.

675 hearing aid (blue tab) zinc-air cells. they are 1.4v and work just fine on most cameras requiring 625 mercury cells. exposure meter is spot on on my minolta SRTs.
they are like 3.99 a dozen at walmart or a dime a piece at the drugstore.
only issue is they're different size, but you can wrap some foam around to keep them in place, and sometimes it's not needed. the spring tension on the SRT keeps them in place.

don't fall for the weincell meme. it's the same thing but way more expensive, and it's also a zinc-air cell so it'll dry up over time. won't last nearly as long as the mercury cell it replaces, or even silver-oxide/alkalines.
only valid reason to get a weincell is to use it on 8 or 16mm film video camera meters that absolutely require the constant 1.35v.

or just add a diode after the battery and be done with it. can be a 1N5711 Schottky or whatever other type that drops voltage.

Pretty sure I can heal those spots but I’m definitely not happy about it. They were developed by thedarkroom.com which assured it is great at E6 sheet film but I’m pretty unenthused by the sloppiness. Highly debating just doing e6 slides at home in a bathtub from now on

E6 is easier to do than C41. I've gotten great results processing slides at home. The dev temp is lower so it's easier to keep constant.

I'll check the mirror. I've been having problems with CCD artifacts from dust on it. I need to figure out how do disassemble the CCD on it and give it a proper cleaning. When I first got the scanner it worked great but over the years it's been having more and more problems.

Thanks! Coming back to it I still actually like the shot. I nailed focus where it counts so this one is pretty enlargeable. Almost wish I stopped down another stop, I think this was at f/16. I’m still trying to determine when diffraction takes over on my shots, but I also shot these stupidly without my 15x loupe for precise focus so it’s hard to truly claim anything from these samples. The close middle and far right edge of the fence are out of focus, the left edge and far middle of the fence is in very sharp focus.

I’ve compared these shots against some provia slides in 35mm I’ve taken and with only one exception (portrait at f2.8, daylight so fast shutter speed, nailing focus on the eyes) in which the film outresolved what I could see under the loupe, the 35mm shots are actually equally as resolved as the 4x5 shots. With a loupe and calculation on tilts/swings I could probably do better on 4x5 with my current (cheap but modern) lenses.

I still plan on sending Rolls to the darkroom because they do so well, but yeah I’m not happy about these clamp marks. What’s a good home E6 kit? Do I need some metal dunking tank for development? I wouldn’t mind sacrificing a sheet or two towards learning, which is easy since I wouldn’t have to ruin a whole roll (actually seems to kinda make the case for developing at home, I could go directly from holder -> development after shooting.)

Provia is just so useful across the board. In the midtones the colors match reality pretty closely but in the shadows there is a beautiful indigo color cast and in the highlights the cast is a hint orange. Overall it has a bit of a hazy blue cast yet accurate despite it. I hate nothing more than warm films and provia is a pleasantly cool slide film.

So I got my GF's brother into film photography. All it took was him to look through the lens of my AE-1p. He bought an AE-1 and while it all works, it seems to not want to turn off when set in 'lock' mode. The light meter needle still reads and if the lens is set to 'Auto aperture', then the red under/over exposure LED blinks.

I'm sure this isn't a feature, I'm guessing something internal isn't working correctly? Or the switch is busted? It's going to chew through batteries if it constantly reads.

I would have told him to get the program because it's slightly newer and features the LED light meter, as opposed to the needle, but yeah. Any ideas?

ae-1 program has two models, one still has needle just fyi.

my best guess for the issue is gummed up shutter button assembly. might be able to open it up and clean it out but i wouldn't recommend it if you haven't done anything similar before.

Probably not worth the CLA at all. I would recommend shopping around for one of the cheaper recommended beginner film cameras. The AE-1 is good but it's been super hyped up lately. Not worth the almost 100$ prices for a camera thats all plasticy crap and will soon die.

diodes do a bunch of neat things but the only one of importance in this situation is the forward voltage drop they introduce to the circuit. that is, they cut just a bit of the voltage coming before them.
that's why they go right after the battery. the SR44 puts out a little over 1.55v. the 1N5711 diode cuts aprox. 0.25v, so after the diode you get around 1.35v, and that's what the camera meter sees.

most 625 to SR44 adapters are pretty much the same exact thing, a diode fitted in a shell that gets sandwiched between the battery and the camera terminal, but for stupid high prices.
a diode costs cents and can be soldered in a minute.

Many old cameras used mercury batteries which had an extremely stable output of 1,35V but are toxic and no longer made. With few exceptions, most cameras expect this voltage for their lightmeter and deviations from it will skew meter readings.

Zinc/air batteries generally output about 1,4V IIRC and will give you about right results.
The longer lasting and also very stable silver oxide SR44 batteries output about 1,55V and make the meter underexpose about a stop. The diode will adjust the voltage from 1,55V down to about 1,35V, making the camera behave exactly like if it had a mercury cell. That's why it's the best solution overall.

Just saw a bog standard Konica Big Mini sell for €140 after 1 day. Just a few months ago that used to be the camera you got if you couldn't afford the already ludicrously overpriced mju-II / Stylus Epic. I remember considering getting one at €45 but thinking that was too expensive.

Thing about thrift store P&S cameras is that they have virtually no history or retro value. We're talking 90's garbage that might work but probably not well and often with some crappy obscure battery like 2CR5 that nobody wants to buy. Most of them are hitting the point of shitting the bed, at least a third of the ones I inspect have borked displays. Most of the thrift store types also have DX coding and no manual ISO which kills push/pull potential unless you like taping and scraping canisters. There are some cameras I'm investing in but plastic point and shoots are never one of them unless they're already expensive and presumed to grow.

I got mine for $20 with the original manual, 50mm f2 lens, strap, and an auto flash from ebay back in 2015. The catch is that the camera is all plastic, and doesn't let you set the film speed manually. It reads the DX code and meters based off that. It has can do manual exposure, aperture priority, and program modes though.

Pic is my doggo taken with my P3n with a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 on Ektar 100.

i have been shooting exclusively portra for the last 6 or 7 years but i decided to try out superia for 35mm and think i am an official convert now. a little more grain, but seems to have much better tones, contrast, and colors. just too bad they dont make it in 120 too. is the pro line worth it over portra for medium format?

Yeah dev services are pretty uneconomical. A $25 1L C41 kit will eke out 20 rolls but some people can fish out as many as 30. Even taking into account the price of the tanks and other equipment you save a lot of money just for the initial 20 rolls you develop. I don't see why people still use dev services outside of those people who shoot one or two rolls every vacation.

That's converted to American. The lab's in Peru, but it's the best in the country and has always delivered great results. What I find somewhat interesting, as we're talking about E6, is that they charge about $1.95 for standard black and white, $2.10 for C41, and $7.30 for E6 - a pretty serious price jump. Their reasoning is that it's a much more complex task, using a full 6-bath process, and the chemistry costs a lot more.

Those prices are for a 36-shot roll of 35mm, or a roll of 120.

I've read that pulling during development isn't necessary for overexposed film, but then why does it exist in the first place? Is it going to have to be pulled during scanning? Most consumer grade C41 usually responds very well to overexposure by up to two stops when developed normally. Changing the developing times in response to over/underexposure is more commonly done for B&W. Get your stuff developed normally and I doubt you'll be dissatisfied.

I've pretty much always ignored kickstarter shit, with good reason, but this thing was recently brought to my attention.
I've not shot film in years, but have been becoming more interested in it. So I like the idea of this thing, but lack the experience to tell whether or not it really is just a dumb meme or just another scam.

It's a neat idea for a product but I think it's actually more hassle, not less, than using a simple 20$ daylight tank.

First impressions: Mildly neat little gadget, but the marketing is definitely a scam. Hanging out with friends in a cafe developing your film? Yeah, no. Even if you're using room temperature monobath, you're still carrying around a jug of smelly, caustic chemicals, and you still need to do things like rinsing the negatives off, and drying them afterwards, which is gonna be... tricky if you're just wandering around out in the world.

But for someone just hanging out at home, it saves you the step of dark-loading the film into the tank, with the caveat that you have to make sure your 35mm's leader is out (either by leaving it out when you rewind or by pulling it back out of the cartridge with a leader retriever tool, which is a skill I've never been able to master).

My main concern is that I worry a company like this won't actually make the thing sufficiently light- or liquid-tight and you'll end up with chemicals all over you or fogged film.

Hi /fgt/, I've got a broken minolta to savage parts, it came with a 24 roll of ektar that seemed to be at least partially used (I probably fogged about 10 frames when I opened the back), should I try to use it and send it to the lab or just trash it?
also it came with a nice 28mm lens, it has fungus in the edges of the front element, I've managed to open it but the whole front element group comes out as one piece, I unscrewed two parts but the front-most part seems to be glued, I tried acetone but the glue didn't seem to care, what else can I try to remove the glue from the threads of the front element?
the fungus it has on the edges should't affect the image but it has a 1mm white spot right in the middle that I'm not sure how will it affect the pictures.

Looks best overexposed a bit in my opinion.

Quite grainy shot at normal speed. Distractingly so in some situations.

I agree that superia 1600 is overly grainy, but I always wonder why people often recommend to shoot high iso films one or two stops lower. Why not just shoot superia 400 or 800 then? They each look great and good enough, respectively, when shot at box speed. And are cheaper too.

i shot a lot of fuji in the early 2000s before i switched to portra, namely the press line and 800z. i dont recall liking it as much as i do superia now (except for the 800z). maybe the emulsion has improved since you last tried it out.

It's because 800 and 1600 ISO film are very rarely actually the stated ISO. It's normally something lower than whats printed on the box. Shooting a stop lower makes it actually perform well.

it was okay, but modern films like Provia, Velvia, and a good number of Ektachromes blow it away in terms of smoothness and flexibility. Ektachrome E100G is smoother than Kodachrome 25 was.
