How the fuck do you guys do night time street photography? I want to walk around my downtown area and take some pics but I don't know how to do it without utilizing long exposure and that's not possible without a tripod

Push that ISO.
Wide aperture.
Practice holding still.
Process in black and white. It helps slight blur look less out of place.
Get a mini tripod.

monopod, fast lens wide open, trash anything that is not sharp. The (very few) good ones you get are usually worth the the sacksful of crap ones that come in between

Just get an AmazonBasics tripod or a cheap yet good chink one like the Zomei Q666. There's no excuse to not have a tripod if you're serious about photography at all.

with a fast lens and a modern sensor you can easily crank up the iso enough for handheld night photography if you're utilizing street lights.
if there are no lights then yes you'll need a tripod.

Fast lens wide open.
Full frame.
In-camera and in-lens stabilization.
Touch camera against objects to steady it for even longer exposures.

Then it is just a matter of finding a balance with ISO.

yeah you can crank your ISO if you have the gear, but any moderately fast lens, wide open w/ shutter around its focal length is fine for handheld street at pretty low ISO. Moral of the story, it's not that hard OP just chase decently lit scenes.

I shoot at night with a 7D at 6400 ISO. Most refined photogs might not like my work. But I love the shots I get. I even like the particular noise I get from the 7D.

I absolutely blur plenty of shots but when I don't they're great. Both my lenses only go to f/2 but it's enough.

You don't have a 50mm f/1.4 yet? I have one and they are amazing. Soft and blurry near the edges, but the neat things you can do with them is something else.

Weird that no one has mentioned this yet, but: underexpose. The shots are at night, so they shouldn’t be exposed to a normal 18% gray card brightness. If you let the shot be a stop or two under where your camera guesses, it becomes a lot easier and looks a lot more like a picture taken at night.

This way you'll end up with 2-3 blurry shots and hopefully a sharp one. Once you go below 1/focal length without stabilisation sharpness is up to luck, so just take multiple shots.

This is the easiest way. Just get a q666 or equivalent from ebay or ali, they're compact, light and most importantly cheap.

OH MY GOD YOU USED 400 ISO!!! Your picture is trash, all that noise!

Push that shit up, 6400 on most new cameras is fine for street and don't let the pixel peepers tell you otherwise.

And use B&W if you need to, hides the noise a little better.

No, I’m saying image quality is far down the list of things that matter, after things like subject, composition, framing, etc.

A well-composed shot of something awesome that’s noisy as shit is always going to be better than a shot with great image quality of something boring.

Ideally, it’d be nice to have BOTH good image quality AND a good photo, but if you have to prioritize one, prioritize getting the shot over keeping your ISO low.
