Yea, the gold is tacky as fuck, but it has some nice things over the stock a7.

Mine even has an aftermarket focus screen with 9 section grid in it.

Currently paying 15 AUD ($10.60) for a roll of C200, developing and scan included. How badly am I fucking up? Develop and scan is always $15 for every C41 film and they give you a "free" roll of fuji C200 135-36 with every process, so I can just perpetually shoot C200 for $15 all included. I feel like I'm getting jewed, but I can't really compare it to anything because I haven't shot film before.

It doesn't sound like an awful price. As with most things the more you decide to take on yourself, the more you'll drive the cost down.

That setup works okay for C200, but if you want to branch out into other film stocks it's going to be worth investing in a scanner of your own. CAD and AUD are about 1:1 and labs here charge $4-5 for 'develop only".

I'm currently scanning the films shot by the children during the school project. Some cheap 400 film from a disposable camera. Did a fast comparison of what thePlustek 8200i IR dust removal (iRSD) does. Left is the original negative - dirty and with scratches. Right is the automatically corrected/cleaned version. Apart from cropping to 2:3, no other changes were made. The iRSD works even better on e.g. Portra.

Sounds pretty high to me. I currently pay 7€ for 3 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 plus about 3€ mor for dev and prints. I scan myself. Germany here.

Do copycat cameras yield the same result as the original? For example, a FED to a Leica.

Also has anyone messed with this camera?

Just got this really weird tlr from a relative who's a gear whore.

Focusing knob was loose but just screwed it back in place.

Googled what it and apparently it's copy of a Seagull 4B from China. Which is also a copy of the Ricoh camera.

So this camera is a copy of a copy. I tried googling the photos for it no luck, only bits from 2005. Theirs not very much information about it either.
My guess is the images will be like a lomo lubitel 166 or slightly better.

Guess I'll freshing this camera and see what it does?

That said, it's a little silly the way some things seem to hold value for collectors or whoever. I have more or less inherited a very minty F2 with the meterless DE-1 prism and this thing does not seem like it should be worth $800 CAD+ yet apparently it's very sought after. I have had an FM2N for many years and it's not easy from my perspective to see why you'd rather shoot the F2, but I guess it is pretty qt.

Damn, that's way better than prices here. I looked everywhere but the cheapest is about $7 for a 36 roll of superia 400 or c 200 if you buy them in a 3 pack, kodak gold 200 is around $9 for one roll and there are no bundles. I've looked everywhere and there are some better prices on ebay but the shipping is always high.

I was actually thinking about getting a C41 developer kit and only pay for scanning. Someone in the other thread said the Epson flatbed scanners aren't too good for 35mm scans. And I can't really afford anything better like an imacon

How far away from expiration is film supposed to be when the company sends it to you? I had ordered stuff from lomo in January and all the CN film doesn't expire until late 2019 but the slid film that I got in January or February expired in March and as a result my shots were a bit under exposed. My camera store guy said I should call up Lomo and complain

for some weird reason Portra in 135 is really hard to get over here. the fuji stuff, besides c200, is only available at the local fujifilm stores and prices are on par with US prices.

c200 is always availabe at every walmart for 6 USD a 36exp two pack. really convenient while traveling around the country.

It's even cheaper than developing C41 yourself with the Tetenal kit. One of our local DMs recently sold double packs of Agfa Precisa for 8eur, as it was close to its expiration date.

Best deal I got was the local DM closing down for renovation so the whole store was 50% off every article plus an additional 25% cause its was the last 3 days until they closed. Every isle was completely raped except for the film corner. Grabbed about 20 Percisa 4 packs for I don't even remember how cheap it was but I was pretty darn lucky

It had a red price tag. Bought 2 double packs and haven't shot a single roll of it so far. Expired 07/2018 and it's still in the fridge. When they stopped selling the Fuji stock, I bought all rolls from 3 different stores and still got some in the freezer.

Bit better here in Melbs but (colour) film prices are still shit. I just shoot mainly b&w now because you can get it cheap in 5 packs @ dcxpert and dev at home pretty easily.

Get a plustek 8100 for scanning. I got one for $200 and it does the job. Takes fucking forever to scan a roll though.

The focussing is semi shit. It does it job really well, focuses perfectly but the shit is the nasty haze on it and appears fragile.

I manage to finally find someone who has used it recently(2017). The image are fairly sharp. Not for a Copycat x2 Camera.

Going to order some Kodak Portra 400 and Ultrafine and try this out.

The exact same. A 100mm lens is still a 100mm lens and will shake as such.
You really need decent shutter speeds to hand hold medium format.

because the field of view will be wider with medium format, effects of shake, when viewed from the same distance and resolution, will be lower. however, because mf is higher resolution, it will still be just as shakey, only when zoomed in, which make sense knowing medium format is just a bigger emulsion that captures more of a lens's image circle

but in reality, no mailman will give a shit about a package full of rolls of film. I ship batches quite often to get them dev'd in CDMX. no problem so far besides some stupid long wait times every now and then

He just asked whats the "best". 503CW is the newest model, so It'll be less likely to require CLA. I owned the 500CM and 501CM. Of the two I'd go for the 501CM. It usually comes with the acute matte focusing screen and has mirror shift with longer lenses (180mm+ I believe).
The 501CM I had was also incredibly smooth to use, but it was barely used. Looked like new.

If you play stupid games like this, you need to be scanning yourself. A typical lab tech isn't going to adjust scan settings so the scanner punches through the extra dense negatives.

Late post, but fuck it. I encourage all to use vision and develop *correctly* themselves.
Chemicals set me back ~$70 from artcraft, and even a fresh 400ft reel from kodagod winds up bringing the total cost per 36exp roll to 7-8 bucks.

This recipe is based off the official ecn2 recipe, but I tweaked it a bit for a smaller 1.25L batch (almost enough for a patterson 2 reel tank) as well as accomidate slight material loss during measuring and mixing.

Sodium Sulfite .56 gram
Potassium Bromide .4 gram
Sodium Carbonate 6.6 gram
Sodium Bicarbonate .8 gram
CD3 1.2 gram
1.25L. Best to mix at the developing temp of 41-43 celsius(106-108 fahrenheit). If it fizzes and produces a purplish slimy liquid, you did something right. If you use a hard water, you'll get some rocks at the bottom, filter them out.
About 3 minutes of time.
Mild agitation every 30-45 seconds.
I've had very presentable results with this process.
ECN2 is a very fast process. Dont't skip the stop bath. You can c41 blix or use ferricyanide bleach and fix. Wash like normal.

The kodak specs call for sodium bromide I think. But I substitute with potassium bromide as its easier to come by cheap and is an ingredient for other film uses. Because potassium br provides about a third as much bromine as sodium, the potassium is 3 times the recipe calls for.

I'm baffled that 1818 x 1228 is even an option in this day and age. Under what circumstances would this resolution be usable for anything? Why would anyone ever choose it? And it's a jpeg that's been compressed to hell. It actually occurred to me to ask about scan resolutions, but only because I was expecting them to try to sell me on 6400 dpi and I knew I didn't need that much. Never in my life would I have guessed that 1818 x 1228 was an option in 2018. There's absolutely no info on scan resolutions, what scanners they use or prices on their website, it just says they process film, so I actually called them and they said a "mid res scan" was $22 and a "high res scan" would be $27. Neither of those are TIFF, and they couldn't actually give me an answer on resolution, only that the files would be 25 and 50 MB respectively. That's absolutely insane and you are too if you think there's nothing wrong with this lab. They even told me that the "low res scans" were supposed to be 6 MB jpegs, while the ones I got were all 2 MB.

As to your second giant paragraph, that's more than big enough for what most people do with pictures, aka post to Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, 500px, WordPress blog, whatever. If someone needs something with higher quality then im sure they have options for them, but they have to ask for it. Which you didn't.

Like I said it's your first roll. Everyone makes mistakes like this when they start out. It's no big deal, don't get upset and just learn from it and don't make the same mistake again. I'm trying to help, just in general if you take responsibility for things you will be more likely to correct your behavior and not continue to make similar mistakes again in the future. Blaming other people for everything is a great way to never learn and fail to progress/improve, not just with photography but with anything in life.

They do develop only for $10, but at that point I'm better off mailing my rolls to a lab in sydney that does develo + 3600 x 2400 scans for $12.50. Meanwhile these guys charge $15 for a 24 frame dev + 1818 x 1228 scan, or $18 for the same in 36 frames. Their deal is supposed to be that they give you a roll of C200 every time you get something developed and scanned, but it's not worth it if you need to pay at least $22 to get anything usable.

Besides your posts here of course, which would point to that answer being 'a lot'.

BTW the pro lab in my city's base scans are 1024x1544, which is exactly 300dpi for a 4x6 print. Would you highly doubt film shooters are interested in that too? You're looking more for archival scans and your average shooter will either not need those, or will know to ask for them specifically.

You get what you pay for. For professional results try Fotofast in Brisbane. They have a range of scans and times that they can get them back that are prices accordingly. If you want pro res scans and can wait 4 days dev and scan is $21 a roll. These are 6750x4500 scans using professional grade Noritsu HS-1800 and LS-600 Scanners. 2 day turnaround is $24 and 1hr at $30. They dropbox that shit for you and can post your negs back for postage fee. I get them to hold my negs and mail them in bulk when I have a lot there, saves postage. It is expensive but the results are worth it. Blanco Negro in Sydney is good for black and white. I have some rolls of B+W with Fotofast now some will see if the results are as good as their c41.

If you don't mind remjet in all your chems, prebath with the baking soda at slightly above the developing temps @ ~108 deg(the crucial detail nobody fucking mentions) and agitate the living shit out of it. If you skip the prewash, that's okay. The ecn2 process will soften the remjet to where it just comes off the film and into every liquid that contacts it.

I'd recommend the Tenetal kit it's also around $60. I buy mine from Decisive Moments they're the only place I buy my film supplies from. Cheap compared to other places in Australia, Express postage is only an extra dollar from the regular post ($13.50 for express Australia wide) and they throw in extras like fridge magnets and a chocolate.

Just keep raising the dev times. I'd suggest not stretching any further than 20ish, the dev times (especially the time for blix) get extremely lengthy

the instructions have times up to the recommended amount but anything further than that can be calculated easily (not sure if there's a formula but you could figure it out from the recommended times). Also higher speed films (400+) and push processing will deteriorate the chemicals faster.

Yeah I guess that's good enough, I'll just extrapolate from that and see if it works. I figured pushing would make it go bad faster but I didn't know about high speed film causing the same.
Thank you anon, I'll get a plustek 8100 and the tetenal kit later this week and see how good the setup is. If it all works smoothly I might offer dev+full res scan for like $8 (6 USD) on the local filmfag page just to help bring my own costs down a bit, labs have atrocious prices and quality here and every other city is far as fuck.

So far, I wouldn't use any slide film on the market for portraiture. Color and contrast are a little too wacky to justify using them above the color negative options we have on the market now.

Provia probably does the best desu, just because the color is more subdued than a stock like Velvia. Right now, I'm waiting on two rolls of the new Ektachrome I preordered, and I'm reeeeally hoping it does better than Provia.

Your meter is designed to ignore IR light as much as possible, so you're working on an approximation for how much NIR there is when there's a certain intensity of visible light. It's an index, not a direct measurement.

You slam on an IR filter, rate the film a whole heap slower than it says on the box, and develop as normal. If you want the best results, use one roll for tests, or at least give it a few frames so you're in the right ballpark.

Autumn... well... one of the main things about NIR is that healthy foliage shows up very bright, dead or dying leaves don't. So yeah, there could be some fun to be had in the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.

It's an old Chevy thing. I had an 81 Camaro that was the same way. Helped with putting more weight on the rear wheels for traction. Plus I think the front springs were standard across different engine options, so cars like this that came with both small and big blocks had less weight to weigh down the springs in the front when equipped with a 350 or 327

I really need to pick up a scanner. I got a massive, old printer/scanner combo, when that kicks the bucket I will replace it with a good scanner and compact printer.

I've just purchased a half frame camera to try out some new stuff. I really like the creative possibilities of combining several shots into a larger one, such as a panorama. I ordered a camera off of eBay from Japan, the seller had a good reputation and the light meter was advertised as functional. It is not. The camera is a Ricoh500GS, which is like a budget Canonet. It's got a 40mm 2.8 and shutter/aperature rings feel so so sweet and the focus throw is great. It just would suck to have to use an external lightmeter.

I've tried troubleshooting every way I know how and nothing is working. I want into film so bad bros.

Any tips to figure this out before I contact the seller? I threw out the bubblewrap and packaging like a dummy.

Ask the seller for a partial refund and open a dispute. Use your phone to meter. I have an android phone and use an app called "light meter - free". It doesn't have ads as far as I can tell and gives me accurate exposure. If you're ever in doubt go for more exposure, like if the scene has lots of shadows you want to preserve. Film can handle overexposure well but you can't push shadows like you can on digital, so it's better to go brighter.

Can I just buy a digital thermometer at the pharmacy and use that to measure film temperature? I've found one that's supposed to have +/- 0.1°C accuracy for $10, but the cheapest darkroom thermometer is $28 in my area.

what kind of battery are you using? those old rangefinders usually require a 1.35v mercury cell and I've ran into like one that plain refused to meter with the 1.55v SR44.
try getting some 675 zinc-air hearing aid (blue label) cells. Those are 1.4v, but usually meter a bit below, closer to 1.35v. they go real cheap at walmart or most drug stores, like $3.99 a six or dozen pack.
they're smaller than the 625 mercury cell so you might need to bend the terminals to get it to make proper contact.

Infrared can't see through a bag. Longwave IR could possibly be used to spot bags containing heat sources, but it's not clear why anyone would want to do that.

So they're probably X-ray scanners, but if they're the type used on hand baggage in airports you could put 3200 ISO film through them 20 times and it would be fine. Only the higher power x-rays used in airports for luggage that's going in the hold stand any chance of fogging your film.

My 500CM was prone to locking up. The 501CM never had any problems. But honestly? I think Hasselblad is overrated. The flexbody is the only interesting one, but the lenses aren't really made for it because of small image circle. The Arcbody is stupid expensive and uses a completely different lens system.

The main benefits of Hasselblad is that it's relatively small and has interchangeable lenses and film backs.

I would say it's just the opposite the stainless steel body is pretty tough.

I find them quite comfortable and intuitive to use if you come from 35mm SLR systems but the waist level viewfinder can take some getting used to.
They are however getting harder to find someone willing to repair them, and the cost of repair is sometimes the price of a replacement body / lens

Yeah but they sell leatherette at quite steep prices so I made my own cover with some leather I got from a local shoemaker for free. Cleaned off old shit with q-tips, acetone and a bit of patience. Then made some templates out of sturdy paper and cut the leather. Will post the intermediate steps if ppl are interested

Ok, here goes:
First removed the fake leather, showing the original (although cracked) vulcanite. I could quite easily remove it plby carefully prying it off with a small pocket knife. Be careful not to scratch the underlying metal.

Here you can see what it looks like with all the old vulcanite removed. What remains is the old glue, which you need to remove with acetone. Be very careful though, this is a work of patience. Apply acetone to a small area with a q tip to dissolve the glue, then scratch it loose with a blunt screwdriver or (preferably) something softer like a popsicle stick or whatever. Just not scratch the metal finish. It is normal when this process costs like 20-30 q tips or more. When your camera looks something like this, you're done. Note: the Leica III has a matte black finish underneath, another camera may be bare metal or something else. The thing is that all glue needs to be gone.

Start on one side. Apply some glue on the camera (I used Bison kit) and even it out with an old, small paint brush (you can't reuse the brush bc it'll be glued). C200 is quite grainy, but it actually is the sharpest colour neg (not because of grainy it appears either), if you use a noise reduction on it and set luminance noise reduction to 0, and use colour/chrominance reduction only, which basically desaturates the noise/grain only, it looks really nice.

Portra 400 is better. I shot it in 6x7, used to 400H before it came out. When I switched over, it was like moving up a format size, the grain was just that much finer, the shadows on correctly exposed (not underexposed) images didnt drop out either (even in flat lighting, such as dark hair on a model).

Portra 400 still worked underexposed or pushed as well. Its perfect at box speed, if I were to shoot 400H again, Id shoot it at 200 or 160 to help avoid the issue in darker tones on a model.

Has anyone tried Negative Lab Pro? Just heard about it from watching Nico's Photography News, it's essentially Colour Perfect but it's a Lightroom plugin which is great since you have the better workflow of Lightroom. The price is pretty steep at $99 but there is a trial version and it's honestly way faster and better than any negative editing guide I've followed. Thoughts?

I grew to dislike film photography groups a lot. Especially on facebook.

It's like gearfagging, except with zero understanding of any technical aspect without any factual accuracy, misinformation, and they just make shit up.

What is worse, is that the photos they post are the most boring, bland, lifeless shit I've ever seen. Normie's snapshits on their iPhones are way more interesting, since they at least take something that they may find interesting.

And those bland af photos will be met with comments about how they are stunning, amazing, etc (I did go look at a group just now, and most current photo is somewhat interesting at least, not great or good photo, but hell of a lot better than everything else shared).

I would say its celebrating mediocrity, except it is well below mediocre.

Ive also received and seen elsewhere these kind of comments from those kind of people, "wow this could have been a good photo if it was shot on film, a shame really".

Its kind of like people who take the most boring, worthless photos latch onto it, and those photos now actually have value, except they dont because the attention is just given by others who do the same kind of thing.

And that just makes me withdraw entirely and not share any film photos in groups, and then it got to the point that I just dont even post film photos online at all anymore.

It is even to the point where feel like it just lowers the value of my photography, if it is shot on film.

When I hold the shutter button it waits to advance the film for as long as I hold it. Does it mean it has a permament bulb mode and I have to time a fraction of seconds manually with my finger?

If you're not looking for a Leica lens, I'd say Biogon and Planar. Otherwise Lux for 35/50 and Elmar for 50mm. The latter if you don't mind one stop less.

didn't scan it myself. Was done by a photo store. I do have my own scanner at home but it's unfortunately worse than the one at this store. This one did turn out odd though. I post in these threads a lot though, and this is the first time anyone has said anything negative about my scans.

How's this one for comparison? This one is on Fujifilm Superia Xtra 400 on the same scanner.

Not sure, usually you gather bits and pieces of knowledge from here and there and gradually can read the datasheet.

What do you need to know?

Datasheets are good to understand contrast and spectral response (does it go into infrared a bit? Does it have a dip somewhere, like orthochromatic films? etc.).
But actually using the film will tell you more.

I mostly look up datasheets to see dev times, pushability and reciprocity.

Depends on lots of things.
Mostly, what film you're using and what filter.
Rollei Infrared has much deeper IR reach than Ilford SFX for instance.
And a 750nm filter cuts quite a few stops more than 720nm.

That said, with Rollei IR and a 720nm, I rate it down 7 stops (ISO 3) and if there's lots of shadows, an extra stop (ISO1.5) because shade is mostly made up of visible spectrum light and not IR.

You develop normally at 400.

Of course if you shoot unfiltered, shoot it at 400 or maybe 200. But you won't get an IR effect that way.

Probably not. My Konica AA35 does that as well, I think it’s basically a ”silent mode” as the camera has a rather noisy film advance. So when doing discreet stuff you can hold the button for a bit and let it advance when the noise isn’t a problem anymore.

As long as you keep the bottles upright, I don't think so. But spare yourself the trouble and go for soda bottles then. Extra protip; you can squeeze them somewhat to keep out air, hard ro do that with glass.

It really isn’t that stealthy, the shutter is also pretty loud. I don’t really care anyway, I tend to shoot straight on and people notice that anyway.

For the real creepers there’s the Konica Hexar AF with a real silent mode. See Masato Seto’s Silent Mode for what you can do with it.

Excellent lens, decent viewfinder, handles pretty well. Quiet shutter. Not the biggest fan of the aperture and shutter speed dials (which could use a tab for easier grip) but they're fine.
It's great that, unlike a lot of other fixed lens rangefinders, the light meter keeps working in manual mode, though it's a bit weird in operation (uncoupled and uses an old light value system).
Haven't ever really used the spot meter - completely unique for a rangefinder AFAIK, but it's there I guess.

Mine's also developed a weird problem where the light meter gets "sticky" that I haven't been able to solve despite disassembling and cleaning, but that might just be my copy.

It's a good camera with some quirks, probably one of the best fixed lens rangefinders out there. Also one of the best looking ones IMO, especially if you can find one with its black half-case.

nevermind lmao, turns out the scan is a 1800x1200 shitbed scan with atrocious dynamic range and colors that are all over the place
For a decent scan you need to pay them $27, and at that point you're better off just buying the film and getting it developed somewhere else. Some labs in vic and nsw will do dev+scan at a decent resolution for $13

You have to load it in a way that the part that got exposed ends up on the right half of your frame while the unexposed part ends up on the left half. Then you take a pic and the right side will be white with a small redish line in the middle where the felt was in the casette.

I'm waiting for B&H to ship mine. My body is ready.

I just developed the first roll from my F100, and I am real excited to run some Ektachrome through it. Being able to use my Sigma art lenses with film is a game changer.

Also, the AF and metering on this camera is pretty amazing for a nearly 20 year old camera. It's really well suited for street photography.

This poor little cat is so sweet, but she's absolutely skeletal. She's always in front of the same house, and she has a flea collar, so I assume she has a home, but she clearly isn't getting enough to eat.

It breaks my heart every time I see her.

This bokeh from this Sigma 50 f1.4 looks so nice on Ektar. I wish the 85mm wasn't xbox huge, because I would love to take it out for some street portraits.

Look up SP-445 system. A boomer made a better tank that develops 4 sheets of 4x5 in 500mL of chemistry, and you can invert it. Its $85 but worth it imho.

Just got this camera for free. I mainly want to take portraits outdoors, probably lowlight, downtown at dusk here in miami.
Watched a few videos yesterday and saw that typically a prime lens is favorable for its sharpness when shooting film for my uses.
Any recommendations under $150 or am I jumping the gun and should learn on the stock lens until I get experience?

For low-light, unless you want to use flash (which you probably don't), you're going to need a lens that lets in more light than the kit lens. Fortunately, yeah, you can get a decent one for under $150:
