Yes. You'll need to get a color checker card and make sure the factory stuff is properly calibrated. In the end, that really only matters if you are printing it out.

Alright, pee, I made the switch to Nikon to Sony a while back to get the benefits of mirrorless, but now I've started doing birds and wildlife photography and bought a Sigma 150-600 with a MC11 adapter to use with my A6000.

I'm planning on upgrading my A6000 now, but I don't know if I should upgrade to something like the A6500 or just get a Canon to use with my Sigma as a dedicated bird and wildlife camera, that will have way better ergonomics and battery life, and use my A6000 for everything else.

How much would I have to spend to get a decent Canon APS-C camera? I'm thinking about spending about 1000 bucks max, and I've heard people recommend the original Canon 7D, but does that still hold up today when it was released in 2009? Is it that much better than something like the 77D or 80D? Or should I just get a cheap entry level Canon and spend my money on the Sony A6500?

If the MC-11 works as well as Sigma say (like a native lens) then you're not going to beat the A6500's AF with an APS-C Canon DSLR, in fact I'd be surprised if you could best the A6000 for under $1000. You also won't be getting 11fps. Also as you have an EVF you can crop in camera for even more reach and still be able to see what framing you'll get.

I guess, but is it worth it to go from the A6000 to the A6500? As far as I can tell, the biggest improvements are in body stabilization, 4K video and an improved buffer, which are nice but I don't know if it's worth blowing 1000 bucks for that.

The only other option would be to save my money to get a full frame Sony, but I'm pretty sure I'm better off with the extra reach from the crop sensor than a bigger sensor.

You also get a higher res EVF and a shit load more AF points with better tracking. It's a worthy upgrade if you need all of these things, but it's up to you to decide if the A6000 is limiting you in these areas.

This guy's >>3381696 first point is a good one, at least wait until the A6700 because even if you don't get it it should bring A6500 prices down. Ignore what he's saying about reach though, you are correct.

I don't have an answer for you, as it's a very hard question. It's true that the expensive brands like Gitzo are reliable, but they might be outside your budget. Don't forget to include the tripod head in your considerations, and quick release plates for your bodies and big lenses if you're into that sort of thing.

I can't tell if you're making an ironic snide remark or not, lol. But the reason I brought up the older camera is because its only disadvantage is the frame rate for burst shooting which is 4 instead of 6, while it blows the D610 out of the water in every other way and you won't have to deal with the huge depreciation hit from buying new.

Probably somewhere around 1000 bucks, but I'll take the advice of the other people here and wait and see if Sony releases the A6700 any time soon. I don't know if I'd see much of a difference in image quality when it comes to shooting birds when going from the A6000 to the A6500, since my lens has optical stabilization.

OK, this might be a slightly left-field suggestion, but I'm going to say it could be best for you to get relatively high-quality gear, but in used condition and a few generations back from the latest thing. That will give you a chance to have a go at photography using good equipment, but if you decide to sell it a while from now then you'll get back almost everything you paid for it. That's a better deal than very new gear, which will lose at least half its value in the first year.

Let's look back at budget:
How much would you consider an OK sum to spend on your photography hobby, in a time frame of (say) six months?
How much would strike you as reasonable to invest, on the understanding that you'd get it back on selling your gear unless you'd trashed or lost it?

I know it's hard to pin down figures, but there are people using this board who are wealthy in highly developed countries, and others who are barely scraping by, so there are very different definitions of "expensive".

the sticky says to expect paying around $1000+ for a dslr but i'd like to spend no more than $500 on my first, whether that's possible idk, i'd hope it to last around half a year until i decide whether or not i enjoy the hobby and am willing to invest more into it

My first one was a D5100 (I still have it) and it's pretty nice, I have no real complaints with it although I wish I had gone the D7000 route for the extra features with the same sensor (having the telemeter as the same time as the exposure meter is a nice one) and the pro controls. I spent 280 plus shipping with kit lens (18-55mm), used, last December.
If you want high lens adaptability Canon is better.

It's not really a replacement but it's nice to have. Great for portraiture and other uses. The low f-number will allow you to get the much sought-after blurry backgrounds. Let me check some extra data just in case.

I just checked and it has 7 blades, it will give you beautiful bokeh. Also an advantage of the D7000 I forgot to mention: it can autofocus on lenses without a motor because the camera has it integrated.

i managed to win the auction at 250 but the only thing i'm worried about is the shutter count which was listed at 130k
according to the description everything works as should and it has no faults but there is a few corner scuffs

All of those three are way too expensive in my country for me to consider them.

D610 is cost of 4500 PLN or around 1000 EUR if you wish (body), D750 (another one I considered) is 5500 pln/1250 eur, while D800 is 15000 pln or around 3350 eur. 810 goes for 20000 pln.

I have no background on cameras but please bare with. Im looking to get into insect photography as well as small animals.
1)what sort of lenses do i need to get extreme close ups (im talking where the subjects smaller than a centimetre and i want extreme clarity on a2 print size)
2)what sort of body should i be chasing? The sony a73 kind of looks good as i imagine the sensor is useful for light in small environments? But idk. And of course the age old "i want a professional look without spending too much" body cost? Maybe up to $3k, lens similar? I really dont want to spend too much on this

There are other users here on /p/ who know a lot more about this than I do, but the core issue is that you can't take a closeup of a jumping spider and get the whole thing in focus. That means that you need to immobilize your subject (kill it, freeze it, etc) and put together a complex setup to take a large number of photos, each getting a part of the spider in focus, with the lighting identical on all of them. It's then a lot more work to merge those images into one using a computer.

It's definitely a field of photography that some people revel in, and as there are few people with the skill and dedication to do it, the results do stand out. However, don't get the idea that there's some camera you can buy that will allow you to take a photo of a small spider and have it turn out all in focus and looking right. It's one field of photography in which there are no shortcuts.

They can say it's a personal camera unless your customs laws are draconian. Alternatively there's services like grabr where they charge you a fee for bringing stuff from other countries, but it's pretty hefty (however it's worth it sometimes).

Its mount is likely a dead end, since Sigma just announced that they're hooking up with Leica and Panasonic on a new mount standard. I don't have any experience with the Quattros, but I've used earlier Sigma foveon-based cameras and:
1. The quality of the images is truly spectacular. Legitimately different from anything else out there.
2. They're so fucking annoying to actually use that the spectacular image quality is not even a little bit fucking worth it. My biggest complaint is with the lack of raw compatibility, though, and that guy can output DNG, so it should be a lot less annoying. I'd read some reviews from people who have actually used that actual camera first, though.

From what i've read all Foveon sensors are slow to focus, and it's same on the SD1.
They could probably improve it with some good coding, but i can't help get the feeling that Foveon is a finished design that can't go further and probably will get scrapped.

i did keep the macro that was in the group just bc it was the only one in my camera bag, ive never used a lens like it before, its focus and zoom are like intertwined and extends considerbly from a very small form factor. all the way in its like a tele but the more it extends the fov and dof shrink very quickly. forgot the model but they were reselling for 50-100 and i got it for 10 bucks because it wasnt priced. will post later

According to tests the "React" series have mediocre read speeds, but their write speeds are significantly higher than the "Go" and "Select" series cards.
I can get a good price on these cards. They're 20% cheaper than the sandisk extreme alternative. I will be using it with a ZS200, potentially filming some short 4k footage, but probably more stuff in 1080p.
Will it suffice?

Because full frame is more desirable even if it's old. Someone may pick a shitty old ff body over a newer crop body even if it has worse image quality, just for the shallower depth of field, field of view with certain lenses, larger viewfinder, and because ff bodies tend to be higher end (better controls, build quality, features).

I got an old EF 17-35mm 2.8 L in decent condition, used, for ~$340 USD with a $70 USD autofocus adapter (Commlite brand) from Amazon.
I don't think you can make much saving with manual focus only. You'd have to go back to the FD mount 17-35mm, which aren't too much cheaper than the old EF mount ones.

Works well with my A7Rii. I'm sure the Sony 16-35mm would be better if I was more demanding about autofocus.

If you can find the same, under 400 Euro for a working wide angle isn't too bad. The low price you want to look for on the Sony 16-35mm f4 is ~750 USD for used&good quality.

The 17-40mm that you posted also sounds like an OK option.

You could also look at getting an LA-EA3 and an A mount 16-35mm (or 17-35mm with an LA-EA4). You've also got a Sigma 12-24mm as well as some zooms from either Tamron or Tokina (maybe both) around 16-17-35mm, all would also require the LA-EA4.

Ive been doing streets with d810. I'll tell you not to do that. I was a nikon fanboy and refused to switch to sony mirrorlesses, which i regret just because it wouldve been lighter.

But i can't ignore the love i feel for 35mm sensor . And the dynamic range is sweet in d810.
So pretty much mostly about how you feel about a gear on hand. Because i think all camera bodies and sensors still needs a huge amounts of upgradings needed to actually make some differences. The sensors and bodies we have still wastes a lot of time of a photographer, even most of time doesnt offer the needed configurations in a compact gear.

Actually most phones are better than camera's on the market, you can do 4k 30 fps now on a phone.
You can also do 1080 120+fps slow motion, Nip camera's are too slow, they need to start ramping up the technology instead of milking them, but that won't happen unless the U.S. leases new chips and sensors for them.

It's the best body out of all those options. Largest viewfinder, tilting screen with a decent res, best battery life, best grip, fastest burst rate. The XT-10 has slightly better controls but a tiny viewfinder, but I'd place more importance on the larger viewfinder for using MF lenses.

Note that I haven't compared image quality, I assume they're fairly similar due to being the same resolution and sensor size from around the same time period but you'll have to compare them yourself to double check.

A phone has a tiny sensor (useless in low light) and a shitty fixed aperture lens. The RX 100 has a decent 1" sensor and you can do a lot more with it in terms of exposure etc. So yes, it's worth it for YouTube if you care about the quality your subs will see.

this and because of the crop you will get a higher magnification. a mft lens with 1:1 behaves like a 2:1 lens with FF (regarding magnification). oly om-d m5 II and m1 II have in camera focus bracketing and stacking, which is pretty nice although you might want to buy a rail for your camera if you are really serious about macro.

In addition you have a variable focal range, a proper tripod mount, a remote shutter release port (so you don't have to be right at the camera for triggering, quite important for a lot of slow motion stuff), manual focus with focus peaking and magnification, better video controls including zebra stripes and histograms for exposure and better video codecs, better battery life and longer recording without overheating as well as a replaceable battery, faster transfer to a memory card, faster start up times, and probably many more things that I'm forgetting.

The only advantages of using a phone are the smaller size, weatherproofing (depends on the particular model but I imagine all the ones that do slow motion are decently sealed), the lower price, and the access to a cell network and apps for uploading (that said transferring from the RX100 to whatever phone you currently have is easy enough).

You can only record for something like 2 or 4 seconds. What it does is continuously record and overwrite the oldest footage, when you press the trigger button it saves the last few seconds. If you need to get right behind the camera and press a precise button that can lose you some precious fractions of a second.

As well as my RX100 IV I also have an XZ1 Compact which does 960fps (doesn't seem like you can lower the frame rate for higher quality like you can on the RX100), I've never used the slow motion recording before so just checked it out. It seems like there are two modes, it seems like one will continuously record and then save the last however many seconds (it doesn't say how long) once you press the record button again, but I can't tell if it's saving what happens before or after you press the button (presumably before). Then there's a mode that records only after you press the button, although again it doesn't say how long (it seems like it may only be 1 second).

Honestly, it's so fucking clunky that I can't see myself ever using it, I'll just stick to 120fps if I don't have my RX100 on me (which I do most of the time).

Well unless you can get some distance between you and the building a wide angle is better than a longer lens. Also shoot wide enough and with enough resolution to spare and you can correct perspective in post, with a tele lens not only would you need to get far away but you'd need to get high up too.

If you just want to take pictures of buildings for fun it's more convenient to just have a lens that will actually capture an entire building from where you're standing, instead of having to walk a way off to fit it into the frame. Even if it causes some perspective distortion (or the "falling over" effect). Besides, as the other anon said, you can always fix that in post.

For building interiors wide angles are great too.

I'm guessing a close focusing zoom would suffice. Or a zoom and a macro if you want to throw more money at it and want really close closeups.

If you speak of "body", can it be of any brand? If so, what lens ecosystem interests you the most? Since you dont want it to be hella expensive i guess your looking for aps-c again? Dslr or mirrorless?

Maybe the 80D if you want to stay with Canon? Nikon pendant would be the D7200 which is the better stills camera of those two and still a great camera today.
If you buy used you may could stay in your budget.
Mirrorless option could be the Sony a6300 (much smaller formfactor though)

for adapters with electronics inside them, be ready to pay $70-400. For 'dumb' adapters (use with manual focus lenses with manual aperture control on the lens), I don' see the point in spending more than ~$20.

It looks like Novoflex is charging ~$160 for a handful of 'dumb' adapters, looking at their website. I wouldn't buy any of those.

How do I attach this lens to an 80D? My friend bought one of these at an estate sale and couldn't get it to work on his Nikon, so I bought it from his for half of what he paid. I'm new to /p/, but I know good glass when I see it.

Should be a fairly simple operation, take it apart from the rear removing every screw you can find until you get to the point that the aperture ring slides off. When you do that chances are the spring loaded ball bearing will pop out on its own so just don't put it back.

What does a /p/ approved cleaning for lenses and stuff consist of?

At the moment mine consists of cotton/q-tips and a can of compressed air, but im worried the qtips scratch and the compressed air freezes and might cause cracking of the delicate glass lens from the sudden gas change.

if you're really ocd about it you could get kimwipes, or pec pads if you're rich.

you could also get a giottos rocket blower (or some chinese copy idunno) instead of compressed air, though I honestly doubt compressed air can do any damage to a lens

as a cleaning solution I can highly recommend lighter fluid (have only used the zippo stuff, don't know if there's good and bad quality brands). I've disassembled and cleaned dozens of lenses and in my experience it works better than isopropyl alcohol or even ludicrously overpriced eclipse optic fluid. Gets all the grease off and leaves minimal marks after a first pass.

for really old lenses with particularly fragile single coatings (like old Leitz Elmars) you might want to stick to (distilled) water though

lens cleaning liquids are often very volatile and will leak into any gaps and cracks. It can get to the aperture and be a total PITA to clean off, or even worse: it can destroy the balsam between elements of a lens group, reducing your lens to a cool looking paperweight.

I've completely cleaned it out, not only my room but every other room, checked my cars too. Both my Batteries and SD cards are out so it makes no sense for the Camera to be misplaced somewhere. If I've taken out the batteries it has to be at home, unless I removed the batteries/card and then forgot the camera.

I'm just feeling worse because I spent $200 on Minolta lenses, and they'll arrive in 2 weeks.
Now I can't even buy a cheaper mirrorless, I'm stuck with getting a FF mirrorless which I absolutely can not afford, especially because the import duty is pretty high in my country, fuck upgrading I can't afford another A7 right now. You *might* just find it. Prolly in a box or behind a chair or whatever. Misplacing stuff sucks, but turn the frustration into something productive and don't give up hope. Perhaps a family member picked it up and put it down somewhere else they thought you'd obv find it again.

There are a myriad reasons why stuff goes missing. Have you loaned it to someone or did someone borrow ot for a minute?

Nikon had only ever made 2 versions of the 24-70
24-70 2.8G
and
24-70 2.8E VR

So the new one has VR and an electronic aperture.

The new one is also sharper in the corners but softer than the old one in the center.

What camera do you have?

Keep in mind that’s “sharper in the center” by the standards of pro f/2.8 standard zooms. Ie, the new one is still going to be sharp as fuck, and sharp to the point that your skill level will have a much much bigger effect on your photos’ sharpness. Conversely, VR is a huge and obvious advantage.

You’ll never notice a difference in sharpness between the two. You’ll notice VR or lack thereof with just about every picture you take.

I'm not a canon shooter and i can't be bothered to go look it up but iirc Canon has a 24-70 2.8 with no stabilization. If you want stabilization the only option is the 24-70 F4 IS.

They were due to release a new 24-70 2.8 with IS but it's hard telling what the plans are now.

Probably won't be for a while. Late 2019-2020?
probably the same time as the 5D mark V.

I have the 850 myself. I'd even consider buying a grey market one for $2500 bucks and a used 24-70 2.8E VR for $1600-1700 if I was doing it today.

If you shoot Nikon the tamron 70-200 2.8 VC G2 is pretty good if your budget is limited.
$700-ish used

If you don't care about VR the Nikkor 80-200 AF-S is really good with fast AF and can be had in the $500 range.

The AF-D version of the 80-200 is down in the $350 range but you need a body with an AF drive motor in it for it to work and even then the AF is kinda slow.

Even cheaper is the old school, film days, soccer mom special 70-210 4.5-5.6D
It's sharp but has slow AF that likes to hunt and it's not that good in dim situations. But $50-75 ain't bad. I've had one It was ok for day time shooting.

With a $5-6K budget, and the goal of very detailed portraits, you might want to look beyond Canon and Nikon. That much can get you a Fuji GFX 50S or Pentax 645z (although you might have to go with an older manual focus lens to keep it under budget since medium format glass is pricey too).

If you really want to stick with Nikon or Canon, you're looking at the 5DS R on the Canon side or the D850 on Nikon. I'd vote for the Canon, but that's mainly because I'm a Canon guy. Nikon guys will vote for the Nikon. There's not a huge difference between the two. For either one, though, grab the company's respective 85/1.4 and 50/1.4 lenses for a great portrait setup.

It will be outside so that is a consideration. How's the sigma 85? Dxo says it's literally the best lens available

You should stay with some theory. Learn basic composition, learn what the three factors of exposure are and how they relate and what the side effects are from adjusting them. Then over you know the theory spend time taking test shots to practice those basics. Once you've got a handle on the basics learn how lighting effects things: angles, intensity, fiction, etc. Then you revisit the basics but now, since you should naturally know what good composition is, think about the light in those same shots.

shit didn't click for me till I got a manual focus 50mm and could see how the aperture ring moved the blades to allow or restrict light and then seeing the difference in depth of field that corresponded to both focal distance and aperture. So once I figured out what i wanted the aperture set to I moved on to seeing how adjusting the shutter speed and ISO in relation would let me produce the exposure I wanted.

Before that I just had the kit lens and I played with the settings but didn't completely understand the relation to depth of field because up till then all the camera's i had had didn't have a big enough sensor to make it noticeable and even on that kit lens it was tough.

All you’d know is that you can no longer find it. Maybe someone fat fingered it, maybe you misplaced it, but couldn’t you fill out the papers the insurance company wants filled out and get a new one in either case.

How would they prove that it was not really stolen, but that you just lost it?

If you report it as stolen, and then find it and are caught, you can be accountable for both police-fraud and insurance-fraud. Which is why one doesn't do something like that willy-nilly.

Either way, your premiums go up a little with each claim, only reducing over time with no claims.

If you find it isn’t it your duty to tell the insurance company and pay them back. I wasn’t talking about committing outright insurance fraud. I was talking about legitimately thinking it was stolen and then finding and/or recovering it.

So if you’re unsure if it was lost or stolen you’re saying the best bet is to not report it as stolen and collect the insurance money for your loss.

I appreciate the discussion on insurance and I'll make sure to do it for my next camera, but my question still stands on what cheap camera can I replace it with, that can use vintage Minolta lenses.
Should I buy a second hand a7/a7ii, or get a Minolta xd-11/x-700. I've never tried film so might be a new experience

Dont buy a cheap camera in the interim.

Replace or upgrade so your arriving /gear/ is compatible.

Do not throw good money after bad, because by buying cheap you will have not only worse photos, but will have to _eventually_ pay again to get the same camera as a replacement or something better.

Get a loan from a bank, from friends, or pay in installments at the camera shop. It hurts now to pay for something you think you cannot afford, but will be saving money by not wasting money on something cheap out of desperation.

This time take care of the damn thing. Lock doors, form secure habits.

ngl I didn't use the a7 a lot for making movies (the main purpose of me buying it) and I'm feeling guilty getting another one when I use it sparingly. But I'm going on a few tours and I thought the a7 would give me some great nature/street shots, but I feel buying another a7 is not justifiable

How much does that cost? Because I'm sitting here happily with my a6000. I know its a meme and it cost me around 700 euros, but came with two good lenses and performs fine for APS-C sensor.
