Because street photography is about taking shots on streets, hence the name. If what you want to do is take pictures of architecture then that's something different. Street photography is all about the candid experience.

I don't know about elsewhere but it's actually illegal here in Germany to take pictures of strangers. Some get away with it of course, but in recent years they've started cracking down on it quite hard. You need to have permission of the person you're photographing to be in the clear.

We already had the argument about this in another thread with another idiotic law obsessed Kraut.

Basically as long as you strip the EXIF off your photos or shoot film there's no issue. The law pertains to data collection such as where someone was at a certain time, the EXIF would technically count as data collection on an individual due to the time stamp and possible GPS data. If there's no EXIF or the photo is analogue then you don't need consent from the subject as no data is collected about date/time/location and so it isn't illegal in the slightest as the law is currently. We literally had a 300 reply thread about this and the Kraut conceded defeat.

There's a few interesting articles about the law causing a boom in analog street photography in Germany, it's cool. It isn't illegal, it's just a broad scare tactic like most German law where they get off on being governed in chains.

Not only that but if someone WAS offended that they were a subject in one of your photos, say uploaded to Facebook, the law requires that they have to go and file a cease&desist notice through a law firm to action its removal. So unless it's really worth the money and time to remove one photo from the internet to them, they most likely won't bother.

At most you'll be asked to remove or delete the photo which happens to street photographers every day worldwide and isn't a huge deal.

I do street photography mainly and I've never had a serious issue with people because I don't run around in cum splattered clothes with a greasy bowlcut. I dress well, I shower, if people ask what I'm doing I have a conversation with them about it. Appearances and attitude matter. It's unfair to say street photographers should stop because a handful of assholes use it as a convenient excuse to harass people.

is totally false. The GDPR applies to analog photography or photos without exif data just as well. The GDPR applies to anything with a data system no matter if analog like sheets of paper or digital like files on a computer.
As long as persons like eg family members can identify you, even because only of your clothes, it needs consent.
You could also argue that a film is a data system on its own since it sorts the pictures from 1-x in the shot order.

Its like those idiotic Reichbürger putting their license plate upside down because the law doesnt state it nor forbids it, yet neglect the fact that it has to be clearly visible and readable, which means of course in a normal orientation.

I went through a wide angle phase and STILL was only asked not to shoot someone once or twice over thousands of people and if anyone with any intent of being a professional photographer ran into confrontation more than once I'd tell them they'd already fucked up. Unless you live in Africa or some shit wildlife is boring as hell and its satisfying catching people doing ordinary things in interesting ways.
For example this shot I took yesterday, just a random shot of two Korean tourists lost here in Japan. Composition isn't good nor the framing but tells a story which I found interesting at the time

Both of those genres of photography are heavily pushed. Street less so because it's less interesting and has less barrier to entry

They aren't. Even historically the big names are mostly landscape and other genres. It's only on /p/ and other beginner groups (facebook, etc) where the audience is almost all new photographers that street photography is held in high regard and some of the old film guys are thrown about. Outside of those cartier-bresson is the only guy who even gets a mention

My point was those togs all have something in common with their work, it always involves humanity. Humanity is more personal you can't draw an emotional connection to some random deer you saw in the wild. Wildlife photography is no more enjoyable to look at than a taxidermy deer head on your wall. Sure you tracked it down for ages, using up all your strength to muster up the final kill shot but to someone who wasn't for all that it's just a deer head on a wall, nothing else. Photojournalism on the other hand is literally the documentary of us as a species. I find it unfair to compare each since they're both very different types of photography.

I like this, good composition and subject, a photo with some story to it.

I personally am just not interested in being the one behind the lens, when it comes to street photography. Shooting wildlife or landscapes, I feel like a witness- but I don't have any desire to be the person to take this shot. I'm mostly imagining what its like to be an upset teenager fighting with her mother and have someone snap a photo.

Whether you think street photography is an invasion of privacy, cliche, staged or boring, people everywhere need to understand that public photography is legal. If you get your picture taken while out taking a walk, there is no logical reason to lose your temper. If there is reason you do not desire your photo to be taken, just calmly ask the photographer to delete it/not develop it, simple as that.

I have street photographer friends who are really just our there to capture unique looking people/fashion/human beings, kinda like fishing and just seeing what they can catch. If you think street photographers are scum, chill out, they're not paparazzi.

long ago, well before cell-phones and security cameras people would be flattered if they had their photo taken on the street. being of interest to a photographer would make them feel special.
now every snot-nosed teen has a camera, security cameras everywhere too. now a street-photographer is being perceived as either a creep or a data-thief and privacy-invader or someone collecting evidence against them in some way. people are annoyed, and i understand that in a way. most people don´t really know of or understand street-photography. and because they cannot defend themselves against the government with their full-on surveillance following their every step, the photographer gets all the hate cos thats the only one they can do something about to some extent.

what has also changed is that people interact way less with each other and mostly only with their cellphone. that makes less interesting photo-opportunities. long ago people would fool around and talk to each other and interact with their environment. now everyone is staring at their phone or showing each other videos on their phone or texting. many people are detached from their environment and the people around them.

Rather people seem to be making a correlation between photographers and paparazzi. Specifically in the context as someone who watches you and wants to record moments of humiliation or scandal, probably for the purposes of exploitation or self-gain. You can be sure that this correlation/assumption/perception is based around their direct experience; where magazines and news all employ the same mechanisms to peer into peoples lives and then present it on print/broadcast media. Celebrity news, regualr news, whatever, it's the same kind of toxic small minded bullshit thet pretty much everyone consumes, even if only passively.
So for the people who even care - becasue in some places most people really dont care about being photographed - when they see a camera they automatically infer that the person is using that camera in the same way celebrity gossip, or evidence of wrong-doing is gathered... or the way they last used their phone... to take embarassing pics of their girlfriends taking a shit.

Most don't ask. The historical appeal of street photography is to capture the "truth" of the streets as they are without tampering with the scene, not asking someone to smile for the camera. Then you're just taking glorified portraits outdoors.

Maybe I'm autistic but I don't see why people find this appealing. Even the really famous photographers like Henri I don't really get it. I love Fan Ho's work but I think that's because it's a bit more abstract and the people aren't easily identifiable. Not him, but sometimes you get interesting gesture or expressions where all the lines flow into each other in a manner that seems staged but it's not. What I like is that out of the chaos you can find order, if you put your camera in the right spot, pointing in the right direction, shooting at the right moment. Most street is unremarkable, but I know that stuff is out there, and going out to look for it is fun, like going hunting. With the difference that you bag a shot much more rarely than a deer. I never bagged a single one, but it's an entertaining hobby, even when I suck at it.

That's Robert Frank and the other one was Moriyama. This is frank again.

Moriyama is extremely aggressive and scary, and, to me, the most fascinating and confounding photographer.

Robert Frank was the classic street photographer.

Vivian Maier tended to shoot images that were a little sweeter and nicer, a great photographer. The story behind her is kind of a meme.

I just never liked Henri, only a couple of pictures. But the rest seem tacky, as if he would be on Instagram selling stock photos if he were alive today.

Well after a little bit of research it seems like he was influenced by Yukio Mishima, so it doesn't surprise me that he was a psycho. That period of Japanese history is extremely interesting and I'll have to look into him more.

From a quick look through both of their galleries I think I like Moriyama more. Which is weird because I don't like that kind of surreal abstract look in paintings.

Pic rel is my favorite of Fan Ho's, though most of his stuff is incredible.

Be completely open about that fact that you're just taking photos in public there's nothing wrong with it.
If them come up to you and ask what you're doing it helps to have a flickr or IG or something you can show them so they'll know you're not creeping on them personally. Business card with the address helps even more and you can get them made quite cheaply now.

I've looked into him and it seems he used his half-completed pharmacy degree to get into selling drugs. Hence him having enough cashflow to buy a full frame Sony camera, motorcycle, van etc yet he's always moving state to state dodging the police. He was busted for selling drugs while living in Miami, now his family doesn't trust him and regularly kicks him out onto the streets. I'm sure there's more to the story but that's the general idea.

He used a instagram page that he accosted with /p/ (@slashpcollective) and talked shit to a pro photographer who almost sued /p/. Also used the same IG page to promote a million dollar scam site where you could win a lamborghini. (Not to mention other shit he's done)
he's a disgusting person who needs to be called out on his disgusting behaviour, especially since this disgusting behaviour he made associated with /p/.

Not all street art is bad or exploitative. I mean when you get some middle to upper middle class kid going out and photographing homeless to be edgy, it's pretty fucking dumb and it says a lot about the photographer thinking that these people are just objects for their own enjoyment. That said, it's entirely possible to humanize others and for street photography to bring attention to much needed issues if it is done so honestly.

Unfortunately a lot of people into street photography have no respect for anyone else or their own stories and just want to be some street art punk who puts their own spin on someone else's life because they haven't actually figured out how understand the world around them and just project their edginess and apathy onto everything else.

Plus, most people who go claim to be into street photography just suck at taking decent photographs and this is their excuse to not learn how to shoot and use proper framing techniques.

For what it's worth I usually try to avoid photographing people if I can help it. It's not about laws, it's about recognizing that quite a few people would not be happy being photographed and potentially finding their face in the weirdest places on the net. Sure, it is something we all accept to varying degrees since smartphones made cameras omnipresent, but for me, it's about respect. If I were to do street photography and someone would be the center of my image I'd ask first if it's okay to take a pic. As for something that's worse than Germany just go to Switzerland. It's all the negative stereotypes about Germany on steroids.

I avoid including people in my photos because an otherwise timeless scene is ruined if there is someone in there wearing current trends. And people in the photo don't bring any value to it.

Sometimes I don't even like if there are cars as modern econoboxes don't bring anything special to the table but date the image.
