Finding a project

I've reached the plateau where I can take technically competent photos in most genres of photography. How do I transition from this technical competency into some sort of artistry?

My thought was to start a photo project, but I have absolutely no idea what to take pictures of. Maybe its the crippling depression brought on by living in a dystopian hellscape. How do I come up with a compelling photo project idea? What questions should I ask myself?

Go outside, find some inspiration.

I was at your point and realised how fucking easy it is to edit pictures, which is why i moved onto Film.
1.You don't have to edit shit (maybe correct exposure with curves)
2. You can focus on composition and the picture instead of "how do i turn this into a good picture in photoshop"

i have posted this one a couple of times. It's not fantastic sure, but the colors are fantastic and the only thing i did was to correct the exposure with 2 curves a bit. Fucking fantastic if you don't have to mess around with camera raw / LR for hours for a couple of pictures. Just straight out good / pleasing shots without much of work to do afterwards

Easy. Start by coming up with a bunch of shitty photo project ideas. Then try some of them out and see what works and what doesn’t. Then come up with more. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Creativity is a skill that can be practiced just like any other. That sudden flash of inspiration is a lot easier to catch if you’re constantly on the lookout for flashes on inspiration.

Try this: set yourself a goal to come up with an idea for a photo project every day for a month. They don’t have to be good, and you don’t have to actually *do* any of them. The goal here is just to get yourself in a mindset of thinking about it. If you come up with an idea like “take a picture of my dick every morning for a year” one day, that’s better than nothing. At the end of the month, you’ll probably have a couple of good ideas in there. Even if you only have one decent idea at the end of the month, that’s better than the zero you have now.

Seriouly look through some professional photo books, follow good instagram pages (like solar.collective; magnumphotos; Dreamermagazine; alexburkephoto; 777luckyfish) to see some serious photography

I think you should ask yourself, "what am I interested in?". You can try going over your past photos to see if there's something recurring about them, it could be already lurking in your subconscious. Otherwise just think, what is something you're deeply involved in, something you would gladly spend time reading about, something you think about over and over? It must mean something to you before anybody else. Don't worry if people don't get it at first.

Unrelated question, what do you mean by "crippling depression brought on by living in a dystopian hellscape"?

hell yeah brother. i call that shit 'pre-processing'. stuff like carefully selecting and adjusting your film, filters, composition, framing, exposure settings, etc. the more you do before you press the shutter the less you have to do afterwards. it's way better than post-processing. it's like going to the gym and eating right instead of just becoming a fat shit and putting on nice clothes and makeup to try to hide your grotesque body.

op that's good, but you really need inspiration. there are lots of technically competent photos on the internet and most of them are hella boring and not worth looking at. you just gotta get inspired my dude. consume lots of art. go to galleries, watch foreign films, listen to underground music, date a hipster girl that likes to paint abstract pictures of forests and crows and shit. just get into it. open your mind. take drugs. put yourself into new experiences. ride a bus for an hour without knowing where it's going and then just get off and wander around. i dont know man, just do something.

There's your project. Should be simple enough for the first timer and you'll find better projects along the way. Now go out and shoot.

First understand that you don't need to. At a guess I reckon you simply feel compelled to out of insecurity or boredom and thinking this will take you to the next level or something. It wont- plain old boring work and effort and selling your shots is what matters first and foremost

I'll tell you what I learned a while ago and which felt like a cheat-code for art, and has served me well ever since-
The formula for creativity is to take one thing and mix it with another. It's literally as simple as that. Any distinct artist, art series, or art style you can think of almost certainly came from mixing two that already existed before it and at it's simplest, you can select two forms of photography and mix them-
Night + portrait = night portrait
Long exposure + architecture = Those dramatic monochrome scenes
etc etc.
Mix it outside of photography and you start getting weird and really creative results, but the formula is the same

The real problem becomes actually doing them though- I have about 20 project ideas sitting in wait but I always end up just regular casual shooting
