Like he further said, you seem to be struggling with what the inverse square law actually means.
I.e., it doesn't mean "Light drops off really dramatically the further you get." What it means is "Light drops off really dramatically... at first. The further away you get, the less relative dropoff there is." See the attached graph.
So yeah, if they had a bright-ass light immediately to camera-left, the Young Pope's face would be burnt to 0xFF while Captain Sparrow would be deep in shadow. But if you have a bright-ass light a bit further away, the brightness differential between the two isn't going to be that big.
Additionally: they're actually allowed to have more than one light.
