The trade-off is that D300 doesn't have video capabilities. Don't listen to the retards bitching about it's being too old and having only 12megapixels, because they clearly don't understand what pixel-pitch/pixel density even is.
If you don't plan on cropping too much, this is my top recommendation for beginners. If you really need video and want to crop a little more, get the D7000 instead, which is slightly expensive.
Make sure before buying the camera need to have fair amount of actuations, I recommend under 80.000 clicks.
