So I got pic related recently for my birthday, it was my grandfather's. I already shoot 35mm film but the scanner I used doesn't scan 120. What's the best scanner I can get for less then or around 300$, I wanna get the benefits of a larger negative but I'm a jobless university student

If I’m not wrong the only difference with the v550 is the dust removal stuff so pretty sure you can also go a little cheaper if you clean your negatives thoroughly.

There is no good medium format scanner under $1000. Pay to have your negatives scanned properly or don't bother with the added expense and hassle of medium format.

what would you suggest then for a scanner?
If in the future I save up and decide to get one?
Also the lab I go to always fucks up the scans and gives me pictures with clipped highhlights and crushed blacks and weird color shifts

I bought a new V600 for less than $300 CAD and it does just fine, pic related.

I'd have to shoot a looot of film before I'd consider dropping $1k+ on a scanner. For a few rolls a month I don't see anything to complain about with my results as is.

looks like a nice scan
but When I had a V700 I couldn't get a scan that printed worth shit, they looked great on the screen but that was it. I switched to a Coolscan and get great prints despite having to use an ancient OS and software.

this might be a topic for another thread
but have others found major differences in scanning for screen vs print? Hardware as well as software and film stocks.

I have a Canon 9000F Mk.II and it's decent. There are aftermarket neg holders that are supposed to be a pretty big upgrade.

I really need to get a new film washer so I can dev and scan more shit, mine got broken like a year ago and I'm sitting on like 20 rolls.

You're lucky, anon! It's a fantastic camera in every way. A proper piece of history too; when I had my dad's old Hasselblad from -85 serviced at the Hasselblad factory here in Gothenburg, they had to ship it to Germany, as the last resident expert on the 500-series had passed away earlier that year. Though you can still get it serviced without too much of a hassle, there's something sobering about the guys who actually made being gone.

Remember to exercise it if you find yourself rarely using it, and always make sure the body and its lenses are wound up (open) before you take the latter off, or put them on. I've heard stories about people trying to brute-force it and breaking the wind-up mechanism between the body and the lens.

I got a refurbed IQSmart 3 for $4k last year with a full warranty and service plan, already paid for itself with 2 archival slide scanning jobs.

There's so much mythology around good scanners among film noobs, but if you ever start doing some real market research, and look into buying them you'll find out the market isn't so scary. Only a rube would pay $35k to buy an Imacon new and drum scanners are an outdated, unfixable disaster waiting to happen

This scan looks like shit and your color depth is extremely limited. DSLR scanning is a meme. Take it from someone who had a fantastic setup using flat field macro lenses taking composites. The quality is there in places but the consistency and accuracy of colours is beaten even by a flatbed. Just stop being poor and get a Plustek 120 or a Coolscan if you can deal with the old OS.

I use a V700 with the standard holders. This was shot on a Rolleiflex 2.8C, I regard it to be great for the money. I paid about £190 for the scanner and it came with some cool AN glass 5x4 holders. I think a big thing for flatbed quality is making sure the negative is in the fixed focus region. I think I got lucky as it's close enough, but some people get betterscanning.com holders with adjustable heights.

That's the part where it fell apart for me. When I got my DSLR scanning rig up to work well sharpness was very pleasing, colour on the other hand was poor. This also largely goes for budget flatbeds and dedicated scanners.

Maybe I should dig up some old slides that I have 9000ED files of and do a rescan with my camera and compare 'em...
