You don't need a camera, it's not an essential part of life.
However, while the claim that you don't need more than one body is true it can leave you in a sofabed situation. While I don't need a bed or a sofa beyond my sofabed, it's not really good as a sofa and not really good as a bed compared to dedicated ones.
The lens stuff is a bit off though. Since with your normal and portrait covered, that leaves everything from wide angle for architecture to supertelephoto for birding under one zoom, and things that are like 28-300mm equivalent zooms tend to be ungodly abominations that have absolutely trash rendering and low sharpness to boot.
I appreciate the sentiment of: You don't need more gear, you need more shooting experience. However saying 'One body and three lenses should be enough for your personal shooting' is a better statement, albeit one which is less enticing bait (I wouldn't be responding to it, unlike this, for example).
For me and what I shoot, my budget, and all those other personal factors a 28mm equiv prime, 85mm equiv prime and 300mm equiv prime would be my three essential lenses.
Perhaps a more interesting thread would be 'What one body and three lenses would you use, if you had to limit yourself.'
