Not him, but I never thought much about that for that kind of photo, I would have assumed a lower angle would make it feel less relatable and more alien. Dose being lower down work well with the wider angle of most phones?

Not necessarily. it's just that in this case he's got half of the pic taken with a path. Is the path here the interesting part or the trees and snow around it? Personally, I'd try and keep the path at most a third of the picture. What usually works for me is going lower, and tilting camera a bit up. But you could possibly achieve the same by just tiling it up from same position. You need to be on the location yourself to know for sure.
