Fuckin' take pictures. If you like the pictures that come out of an instant camera, then it's worthwhile. If not, it's not. If you're afraid that someone will think you're a hipster to the point that it affects your decisions on what camera to use, you've already lost the battle.

They are worthwhile, because you get the print instantly. It's a very fulfilling experience to hold the photograph in your hand, like it is with any other kind of photography, but without the wait. My other photography kinda stays in the backlog and I might eventually get to printing stuff.

Imagine a smaller sized SX-70 type camera for their square film format. Would be amazing. Instead they're making small sensor digital printer BLOB shaped "cameras"

I like Lomo's Instant Square since it's got a glass lens. If it was an SLR, it would be perfect. But yeah, Fujifilm seems to be hedging their bets into Instax Mini and Square bricks to shoot with.

when you think about it, it really has a lot of potential because it doesn't come out digital, which means it's probably not going straight to someone's facebook or instagram. I would feel less uncomfortable about someone taking a polaroid of me, vs. them taking a pic on their phone.

Also, it's a unique picture that won't be duplicated and stored forever on someone's hard drive. So if you give it to someone, it's like a unique treasure for them. It's really a pretty epic concept and it never should have gone out of style to begin with. My only problem with instax is the pics are too small, I like the traditional polaroid size.

Yeah, Instax actually comes in three sizes: Mini, Square, and Wide.

Mini are the little rectangles you're thinking of when you think Instax. The Instax Square film is basically just Mini with a little extra on the edge to make it 1:1, so it's still noticeably smaller than 600-style Polaroid.

Instax Wide is about the same area as 600-style polaroid, but rectangular instead of square.

There's also Polaroid Spectra, which I think is like 600 but wider, so probably the biggest of the bunch.

Get the Wide used on ebay around the time wedding season happens. A ton of brides buy one for their wedding then never again so it's basically new in box with a ton of film for cheap.

I would definitely go with wide, but if not, square is the second best option.

Also, does anyone know if the Polaroid film will become any cheaper in the future? Seems a bit ridiculous compared to Instax film.

Nope. Polaroid film was never cheap even when it was heavily mass produced, and now it no longer has the economies of scale behind it. The best you can hope for is for the price to stay the same in the face of inflation.

The new Polaroid instant cameras are definitely great and better than Instax in a lot of ways but they're expensive and the film is hard to find or overpriced. Plus it has or had a lot of variance in quality control from what I hear. Plus retailers don't store it properly so there's a lot of ruined film packs out there.

Instax is just a safer bet, especially since it's so popular you can buy film packs in a drug store and stock is so popular that things aren't sitting on the shelf rotting like Polaroid is.

Not worthwhile unless you don't care about money. My fiancée has a Polaroid but the photos are like €2 a shot so she barely uses it. Only buy things (especially one-use things) you're comfortable enough regularly using and not lose sleep over some waste. If you're not comfortable with the thought of wasting/using anything, shoot digital. If your budget is limited, use 35mm.

The photos are nice enough if you're the type of person who likes to hang up or paste photos around the apartment/car/scrapbook, especially of friends or holidays and trips. But the camera is not inexpensive, and neither are the print refills. Lenses are not interchangeable, and there's barely fuck all in settings to change.

However the irony is that it is more of a novelty item: Once the picture is taken, you literally have friends attempting to perfectly position their smartphone camera over the print to "have a copy", so it begs the question why on earth use the damn thing at all if a smartphone snapshit of the same moment would have made more sense, especially for sharing the picture around.

i can imagine a world where good (i.e. not fair but not great) quality medium or even large format instant film could have a real use to compete with standard film and digital quality, but again the cost would kill any chance of a company going full release on it. it died for a reason and it lives again for a reason as well - which really is pure novelty. only a small number of people want it, and only for cheep.

my advice: build your own

You should get them if you have friends you hang out with that like getting their photos taken. If you don't I guarantee your instant is going to lose it's novelty really fast, as mine did. It's pretty much only good to take party portraits, for other subjects you're better off investing a little more to get a film camera.

Instax wise is a big frame anon. Even a Fuji 690 wouldn’t fill it, it’s almost ~6x10cm.
A TLR or SLR would need a hugeass mirror and lens to cover the frame. Imagine a Mamiya RZ67, 50% bigger.

The most practical option would be a folding rangefinder, like the old Land cameras. Or even better, a way to use instax in those cameras, or instax mini in MF cameras.

What would actually be useful is to have an inexpensive tube-shaped portable printer barely wider than A4, meaning you can instantly print any photo you want on whatever paper you throw into it.

So I just received a vintage Polaroid 1000 OneStep from my Aunty which is pretty cool since I've never gotten into instant film and have been considering getting on of the new Polaroid OneStep 2. The thing takes SX70 film but I've found that Polaroid Originals still makes SX70 film as well as Polaroid 600 film. They also make an ND filter so you can use 600 film in SX70 film camera. https://eu.polaroidoriginals.com/products/neutral-density-filter-pack

Anywhore here are a few questions:
Does anyone know of the cheapest place to buy either SX70/600 film in Australia? cheapest place I've found is around $32 Australian for a pack.
Are flashbars like link related worth getting? Or is a dedicated flash like the Polaroid Q-light a better option?

I've been experimenting with instant cameras for a few months now. The film is certainly not cheap. The usual packs contain 10, most of them you'll fuck up while familiarizing with the camera. Overall, it is worth attempting to try by starting out with a cheaper one and see if you like what it delivers. There are some effects that can't be achieved unless it was taken by an instant camera. I also place value in the fact that they're a physical copy, the snapshot of a moment, stamped in time.

Got one of these puppies when rumors began circulating about the discontinuation of fp-100c. It came out expensive, but film wise, it's cheap. ~$16 for 20 shots (less if you find someone selling loose packets on eBay). If anything you just need the film back. Apparently, you can mod some cameras to fit this back and wa-la! Instant wide pictures.

Word of caution though, you may end up burning a photo when installing a new pack. But once it catches, you're set

A (shitty) example image. I recently got a flash and the images turned out much nicer. Only caveat is that the flash blocks the film slit, so you have to remove the flash every time you want to print a picture

i know it's a terrible idea to come to /p/ and say that photography for the enjoyment alone is a worthwhile thing to do, but hey whatever. maybe its because my artistic business is in another field, but sometimes, and get this- the fun you have doing something makes it worthwhile even if it's not perfect.
