How I'm supposed to promote using social media without creeping out people?

Every guide says to be friendly and get to know people but it just seems weird. I try to start chatting people with similar content to mine then I have two options:

>keep conversation professional, technical, not personal
people start replying but after a few minutes, probably they just get bored or uninterested and never answer me again.
>try to get personal with superficial shit
people probably think I'm gonna try to take some advantage (like if a girl, think I started the photo conversation just as an excuse to try to hit on her).

Even the famous book about how to make friends by Dale Carnegie says that every people in interested in themselves but maybe it only works IRL. As I said, if you ask a personal question the person will get suspicious.


Do you even try to get to know people from instagram? what do you do to avoid the person dropping the conversation too soon?
