>>3425122>So claiming that it's a "meme" because of the things that make it unique is only true inasmuch as shooting any film at all in 2019 is a meme. But you can achieve a unique look by developing any film in the wrong chemistry, by push/pull processing etc.
Cinestill is a meme not because of the look, but because they provide a worse product for a hugely inflated price. Even if you buy it directly from Kodak in the shortest size - which is the worst deal - it's $175 for 200feet, which is good for 36 rolls. Add $10 for 500ml of original kodak prebath concentrate - enough for 50-60 rolls - to remove the remjet perfectly and you are still under $5/roll and then you can process it in any lab as C-41 to get the same effect.
Cinestill is $10 or so, usually more, per roll. That's more than double. And this also ignores the fact that sometimes it comes with spots because the remejet wasn't removed thoroughly, and the fact that it might be "expired" because after the remjet removal it has to be processed soon, not sit in stock.
Plus, that was the worst case scenario, since most people get short ends and recans, leftovers from movie productions, for a fraction of the original price. Like ¢30/foot, i.e. $1.70/roll.
So yeah, I find it a meme because it's a hugely inflated price for a worse product, which you could give the same treatment yourself as well if you were so inclined and liked the results.
