Do you think they'll sell many? S1R specs look pretty impressive for stills, and the S1 is likely to be an absolute monster for (ugh) vlogging etc.

For me this is unfortunately yet another system I'm interested in but cannot afford. Interested to see if a bunch of M4/3 fanbois upgrade and dump their M4/3 kit thereby lowering prices, which would certainly cheer me up.

Not really. Ibis plus lens stab is fantastic, It's so good in fact that you can throw gibals away. And It's fully weather sealed. Only competition is Z6 Nikon at this point. Sonys are old toys in comparison. Worth looking at second market for them. Even when Z6 came, you could see a noticeable spike, should be even higher now.

You can’t accuse a camera that of having <50% autofocus hit rate when it basically hasn’t been tested by *anyone* and then call someone *else* a shill.

Look at dpreview’s review of the Panasonic G9, which uses the same autofocus method. It has a >90% hit rate. You can’t just *assume* that it’ll have shitty autofocus because you once used a compact digital camera in the early 2000s with contract detect AF and it was shitty. The modern CDAF in Panasonics is similar performance to phase detect systems.

It's kind of a bad sign, since the battery is 50% larger than the competitors'.

When you have 50% more energy in the battery and only provide 380 CIPA...you dun goofed.
That means the power consumption of this camera is through the roof, and generating heat like no tomorrow, more so than any other camera we have seen so far.

Nikon F 44mm diameter by 46.5mm flange
Sony FE 46.1mm diameter by 18mm flange

And we all know the F mount was completely crippled and for their entire history of 35mm SLRs and dSLRs produced circular images at APS-C crops because the mount wasn't big enough, and the lenses were shit and never had any fast lenses or fast zoom lenses.

The massively shorter flange effectively makes the mount larger from the sensors point of view.

It's Leica L-Mount and until now it was a pure novelty. Panasonic probably tries to cash in on the Leica prestige, but Sigma will deliver good cheap lenses with their 14 conversions. A new system always costs more.
Also, if by "specs" you mean "NUMBRZZZ" then yes, technically on paper Sony is better, but everything that can't be out in "NUMBRZZZ" Panasonic has a better track record with, like ergonomics, menu layout, features and service.
Remember that Sony only recently managed to give their FF DLSMs a usable battery life

How does Sony manage to fund their cameras and everything else after fucking every person ever over monumentally (just look at their frequent data leaks and movie flops)? Seriously, Sony is the scumbag of electronics producers, but they produce so much more than what you can buy at BestBuy. Their are huge and so is Panasonic.

Sure I understand they are huge, but I can't imagine them keeping a division bleeding cash for years. Surely it must be profitable? I've wondered about their product development before given how often they release new models - it must be the case that they have their development process really well honed to be able to evolve and release with such regularity.

You're barking up the wrong tree anon, at least as far as I'm concerned: I'm the OP, am a Lumix fan and had a GF2 and now have a GX1 and the 20mm F1.7 and 25mm F1.4, and would love an S1R because it looks awesome. I have the means to buy an S1R but just can't justify £4k+ on a hobby which is just a bit of fun. Perhaps I'll stick with M4/3 and pick up a GX7/8/9 if people ditch them to upgrade to S1R/S1, or perhaps I'll save up and pick up a used S1R in a couple of years. My only real problem with Lumix is that I think they are making them needlessly complicated. I just want something with PASM and simple focus/metering control. There are just so many bloody options available in my GX1 that I will never ever use and don't have time to learn about. I picked up a cheap EOS 33 film SLR, and it's a joy to use by comparison.

Numbers alone can be deceiving of course.
Some of these are in decline(Canon fully expects another big decline), some of them are in growth.

If video matters at all and you want FF then you don't want a high res sensor. They have to discard most of the sensor data to achieve the required fps and avoid overheating. This can be an issue even at 24mp.

Canon deals with this by cropping. So does the S1 for 60fps 4k (a frame rate that Canon admittedly does not have), showing that even at 24mp you can run into issues as the frame rate goes up. The S1R line skips everything. Line skipping is better in that your FL doesn't change, but your quality, especially at high ISO, is no better or even worse than cropping or a smaller sensor.

It's just the way it is with today's limitations in sensor design and computing.

But I refuse to believe Panasonic's engineers are that stupid.
In all likelihood they probably want to you upgrade the body 3-4 times before you get the nice all-rounder with very few flaws.

Maybe not financially cause most people wouldn't care for the extra quality, but the Merrill Sigmas made a huge splash and they were just fixed lens, viewfinderless crop cameras. Still the sharpest cameras for the MP count, by a big margin.
