Hey /p/ can you recommend me some photography books to i̶l̶l̶e̶g̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶d̶o̶w̶n̶l̶o̶a̶d̶ go check out? Im looking for what would basically be the recommended reading for any photographer. Also want some good photo books/zines to look through.

Best photography books series is "Time Life" series; authored by Ernst Haas, bar none. It's not available online but you can get it cheap on, it's old.

Online ones:
Ctein: "Post Exposure: Advanced Techniques for the Photographic Printer" ; technical book
Michael Freeman: "The Photographer's Eye" ; basic on composition and framing really explained through (not just tips etc)
Articles by Paul Strand, Eugene Smith etc at the following link:

Short read but most serious commentaries available on photography; it makes Barthes and Sontag look like kids

Maybe p has Ansel Adams Trilogy
I love his pictures but not his books
Unless you're definitely going to take b/w film landscape pics; if you're shooting digital, half of his tips on filters and contrast won't work bc of Bayer mosaic; if you shoot anything but landscape, it won't fit the approach he teaches

If you want deep photography theory I'd recommend getting, but that's more phil than anything

you could argue that the only thing obsolete are the titles. his descriptions of light, exposure, the zone system and even dodging and burning are all relevant todayq in digital, and those books are filled with his photos. obviously not an end in themselves, but definitely worth a read to anyone interested in photography and its history.

Sure it is, and it's great for anyone going to b/w film photography (including printing); also viewing how he thought out his pictures bc they're great
As for digital and/or handheld technique, you would want to have explained mixing color channels, unsharp mask as a tool for general contrast etc those things that are unique to digital photography (and not lens color filters, vc graded paper etc as with analog processing)

Alvin Booth, Nadev Kander, Sonja Braas, Gursky, Burtynsky, Micheal Misrach, Terry world, Man Ray......

There's thousands of important photography books out there. It's impossible to suggest from a big difference in taste

Faking Death here >>3431938 has a lot of essays from the 90s and so on, good Po-Mo art book, Photography and the Art of Chance is newer and the essays are in ordinary English and not the ultra jargon of post modernism. Silent Dialogues is a really good and critical look at the photography of Diane Arbus through her relationship with her brother, the American poet Howard Nemerov. There is also a really good interview out there where Jeff Wall interviews Andreas Gursky.
