It's par for the course in terms of beginner cameras. Just don't get screwed for the price, and get ab SDXC Extreme Pro that boasts a minimum 95MB/s transfer rate if not better, to make full use of that 4k video.

I bought one a few months ago, really happy with it. I prefer it over a big dslr. The kit lens im not impressed with at all so i bought a Sony 16-70mm f4 by Zeiss, expensive lens but nice and sharp. Going to get a sigma 16mm f1.4 aswell for it.

As you probably read and have seen on reviews, the menu is a bitch, messy as hell and alot of tabs to scroll through but once you get used to it its not big of a problem.

I am no longer with Sony but my very first camera (that I got serious on) was the A6000 (see pic related)

I recently moved to Fujifilm and use their X100f mainly. I encourage you to search around and don't fall for Sony's gimmicks.

Don't use the kit lens, its downright bad. You won't see it as a beginner but in a few years you'll look back and see just how bad it is. save up for a nifty fifty or a better variable lens.

THAT being said I feel as if a A6300 would be a good choice for a beginner so go for it!

Also a6000 or 6300 are cheap as fuck considering the fun I had taking pics when I'd go exploring and hiking especially rainy trail days.

Now I get anxiety taking my exploration considering I got 7k of shit on me.

My first cam was an a6000 and while they (a6xxx) are small and great, if you get a decent lens it will make the package much larger/heavier than with the kit lens. So the point of it being small only works with a couple lenses. I actually like the kit lens because it’s so small, and I have gotten some great shots on it. Along with the size conundrum, the ergonomics are terrible, and it’s not properly weather sealed so while you could take it out on a wet day, rain might be an issue. So, if you have a chance to, please pick one up in your hands before you decide. The whole Sony I’ll upgrade” mentality is stupid, so don’t base your decision on that either. Im shitting on the camera but remember I’ve had it for years and it was my first camera, so I just wanted to give you my two honest cents. If I were to get a first camera again I’d get something like a Fuji that is much nicer as a camera and has lenses that actually match the bodies. Good luck.

The kit lens is a pretty good lens to get to know the camera. It will show you which focal lengths you prefer and it is hard to miss a good shot with it. It is also pretty small and weighs almost nothing so you can put it in your jacket or wherever with ease. It isn't particularly sharp, nor does it work well in low light but for a beginner I recommend it.

the first camera I got was a Sony, made the switch to Fuji & I honestly don't see myself using another camera system for the forseeable future, using it feels so natural & effortless unlike other camera systems.

The update is aborted due to an error during the process.

Follow the following procedures:

1. Turn off the camera and remove the battery from it. If an AC adapter is connected, disconnect it.

2. Reboot the software and restart from the beginning.

I have one it's pretty great.
I see following downsides:
Sony APS-C has no fast zooms, except G-master which are for full frame ranges and very expensive, and best primes are made by Sigma, not Sony. This doesn't sound bad until you see what Fuji has for their APS-C.
It has no IBIS, so no stabilization on those Sigmas or whatever lenses you are going to adapt.
Can't flip the screen to the front.

The x100f has a certain look to it that can't be replicated in house. But I really do enjoy the Sigma line of lenses that came out for the A6000 include the 35mm.

Its all a matter of preference

If you're going Sony, you're better off getting a used Sony A7. Full frame is where it's at, especially if you plan to adapt vintage lenses. The A6300 suffers from really bad ergonomics that is somewhat fixed by the Sony full frame cameras.

If you want APS-C go Fuji. The X-T2 is really cheap used these days. I sold my A6000 and got an X-T2, no regrets at all. It's so ergonomic and FUN to use that I actually want to grab it before I leave the house. It's a lot like a film camera that way, just a joy to use it.

I got the 27mm f2.8 for £100 off the grey market and have no complaints other than the fact the lens cap is TINY and easy to lose.

The 6300 have some interesting features for some application, like the audio in, but if you are not gonna use it for videos and you just wanna start shooting, and if you are, hot to say, if you think to go serious in photography, I suggest you to buy a a6000 for like 300 used, plus some cheap lenses to learn, like the sigma 30mm f.2.8. The whole setup will not be nor pro nor high quality, but you will have all you need to learn a lot of stuff keeping the budget low enought to eventually dump sony and go for what will better for you.
The kit lenses from a6000 and a6300 are not bad, but not so useful if you wanna learn so, unless you wanna add some more money on top of your 6300, go for a cheaper camera and get some lenses. Don't be afraid to go for a manual cheap lense. On live view is super easy to manual focus and you will learn more from a crappy lense like a chinese 50mm than from a pro one.

I own an a6000 and an X-T1.

The Fuji is by far the nicer, more fun camera to use. And that’s not even the X-T2, which is even better.

Fuji lenses are better optically, weather resistant, compact, faster autofocus. At least the newer f2 ones. I buy my lenses from eGlobal so it's not too bad. Anyway I was addressing OP who said "should I buy this as my first camera" not some guy with massive investment in e-mount already. Although you can use crop lenses on full frame Sony bodies easily so it's not a huge deal, just a better camera using the lens.

It's cheap because it's a grey market seller, some are based in Hong Kong and some are based in Switzerland. They pick up cameras or lenses in areas with low tax then pass on the savings to the customer. I've never had an issue with buying from them but you have to be aware sometimes the camera companies don't honour the grey warranties. Plus returning things is a bitch. That's the only drawbacks really.

I have been looking to upgrade from M43 to APS-C and both the A6300 and the Fuji XT-20 have been very interesting.

I really like the Sony because of how small it is, but it seems the kit lens is not that great.
The XT-20 dont have all the video features as the Sony (120 fps would be nice), but It have other pros, like the sooc jpegs are great!

Where I live there is not much on the used market, so I will be buying new.

A A6300 with kit lens + Sigma 19mm f/2.8 lens ~ 1050 USD.

The XT-20 with the "upgraded" kit lens 18 - 55mm f2.8 lens ~ 990 USD .

Buy off eGlobal or Swiss eBay sellers as mentioned in this thread. Go grey market if you don't have a used market. You'll be able to afford better gear.

You're better off getting the X-T20 body and a 27mm f2.8 pancake if compactness is important to you. The Fuji 18-55 is pretty much the best kit lens ever made though and you could justifiably never upgrade from it if you wanted to. It's up to you. It's very rare for a kit lens to give you f2.8 aperture and the sharpness the Fuji kgives you.

Fuji also sell refurb kits on their official site like pix related. That's a hell of a lot of camera for not a lot of money. The X-T1 is still great even in 2019, especially if you value weather sealing which is usually an expensive af feature.
