Learn more and actually become better. These old men aren't trying to change the world with their photos. They want to bring their bland, uninspired vision to life and they'll be content if they get just the technical shit right. Go beyond that and improve your timing, composition and subject.

I don't get this complaint. I work a shitty entry level job at a call centre and don't live with my parents, and I have more than enough money put aside each month to afford a new camera or a new lens. I'm a Fuji shooter too and that isn't especially cheap.

Just stop buying Nintendo games or blowing all your money drinking at the weekend. Part of being an Adult is learning to budget and making sacrifices to fund your hobby. If you truly care about photography then you can keep up with old men and their retirement money bridge cameras.

From where I'm sitting, those at the steering wheel of the "photography scene" are visually illiterate banger enthusiasts in between 15 and 30. Les banger travel-lifestyle photo, banger orange teal high saturation "aesthetic"; banger silhouette in between skyscrapers/on the edge of cliff; or banger deadpan-topo-medium-format-style portrait/editorial (devoid of substance, just parroting style) at best. The photographers who produce said bangers aren't far off from the demo that they cater to.

The retired old men are either shit and always were and still take photos of the same garish sunset/woman in sunset/bird in sunset setting and no one apart their facebook followers pays attention, or they're established photographers who have always produced excellent work in their respective styles and garnered the esteem of prestigious awards - but these are few and far between. And mostly dead.

These days even an entry level body is pretty light sensitive, has a decent resolution and old glass is cheap.
The quality of your image will be sufficient for everything but the largest prints with even an entry level body, one zoom lense and one or two fast primes
(Yes there is a difference in quality, no the average person won't see it)
What matters more is that you get the composition right and have interesting motives.
These old guys don't go to the interesting and dangerous places and rarely try something new.

All the older people I know who have cameras bought them just because they didn't know how to use cameraphones. They don't give a shit about photography, they just think they need a mid to high level dslr to shoot family pictures at christmas.

I do product photography for a living and I only own one body, a 24-70 2.8, a 70-200 2.8 and a sigma 150mm 2.8 macro. And I only use the 24-70 for landscapes for my personal enjoyment, and if I really had to I could make due with just the sigma.

What is there to compete with, anon? He is just a gear faggot like most people on this board. You'll be the same when you are 57.

The people to compete with are the people outside shooting ... unless gear collecting is your main motive for buying a camera.

Outta curiosity, what is it that you're competing for? Old guys often (not always, but often) have the advantages of experience and money. The first you can learn, the second is a bit harder but can be overcome. You don't >have< to have the most expensive gear to take good photos and have fun doing it.
