Trying to replicate some of Alexey Titarenko's work for my university project.

Using a Nikon D7000 with ND filter and a shutter speed of around 1 second, I'm just not seeing the results I am looking for.

Any advice?

Looking at how the hands and feet are quite distinguishable, rather than a blurred mess, this wasn't done in one long exposure.

This looks to me like a series of multiple exposures. Hard to tell of course how fast those exposures were. Slow enough to blur their heads and bodies but fast enough that the more stationary body parts such as the feet are still distinguishable.

Too fast, if you want go long exposure way you start at 30s

Yes, I think you got it right; shutter speed should be around 1/15s-1/30s; this is easy to pull off on film bc of cumulative exposure;
When you do it on digital it looks interesting but rather different:

I haven't tried it myself, but wouldn't it be possible to somewhat emulate the cumulative exposure of film, by taking a dozen underexposed photos and layering them in Photoshop with a "lighten" blend mode?

I believe that's what Chris Friel done on pic I've posted; difference from film that you be accumulating light just as areas get lighter, but not on darker or same;

I wish I had the time to experiment with that at the moment, but blend modes like "Light colour" might be able to get a similar effect of brightening lighter areas without touching the darker ones.

At this point though, maybe OP should just buy a cheap film camera to do multiple exposures, if he wants them to look like Titarenko's work.

Correct, this is a multi exposure. Easy to do on analog, take multiple shots without advancing the film (few cameras can do this). If you want to do 2 exposures you need to expose for 2x for double the ASA (if you use 200 film, set camera to 400 and take two pictures. 800 and take 4, etc.).

If you tried this with a long exposure, you would just have a big mess of colors.

This I shoot usually three or four seconds for blurring people.

Youre not going to pick much up with less than that - maybe just feet and hands, like this (1.6 seconds).

Stretching to 6 seconds gets streaks with people (like this).

4 is pretty optimum.

I can tell you've never been in any form of education regarding photography before? Replicating my own work using a style which is famous isn't "ape". It's shows I have a general understanding of the photographer and photography in general.

Right, but then oxford circus is one of the busiest stations, so when you've got crowds cramming into the entrance, they're bound to move slow, so you get more leeway for getting that effect.

The people in the OP are pretty crammed in too. Peoples walking pace does not alter by that much. By the movement of the hands on the rail it looks to be about 4-6 seconds.

Titarenko himself said that these are single long exposures. The effect comes from the fact that the subways were overflowing with riders and the line in moved very slowly, so people's hands would sometimes stay in the same place long enough to show up clear like this.

His entire "City of Shadows" series was taken shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union and this type of overcrowding on public transit was common in St. Petersburg (and likely elsewhere).

Look stuff up before you post answers ya doofuses.

No, you loose shadow details that way, you want to expose normally and then stack the exposures using something like imagemagick.

Make sure your exposures are temporaly as close to each other.

Lighten is wrong as it chooses the brightest color of all layers. Blend mode screen takes information from every layer into calculation to lighten the result. With correctly underexposed shots, screen should come close to averaging proper exposed layers. I agree, averaging proper exposed layers should be better for shadow detail at least. Also it doesn't require to further underexpose for every further shot.

OP here, probably the best one I've managed to capture so far.. this is using the darken filter instead of the lighten filter. Seems to make the figure's a little more spooky.
