Using a simple camera is a great introduction to photography. It helps beginners understand what they want to do at the most basic level, and encourages you to just take the shot without worrying about fishing with controls and settings that barely understand the purpose of.
It teaches the photographer to first prioritize the scene and subject, which a lot of people seem to skip. It also helps the photographer to intuitively know what one exposure value looks like, which can be a useful mental point of reference later.
Throwing a bunch of barely relevant information at a beginner who didn't know what they want to do with their camera is a terrible way to learn. Shoving a Sony or Canun rabal into a beginners hand will more often than not doom them to gearfagging on forums and taking shitty, boring bokeh portraits for Facebook. There nothing wrong with becoming those things, but it's not the best path to send someone down.
