On an entry level DSLR, the equivalent of 35mm would be about 20mm (21.875 for canon, 23.333mm for everyone else). I rounded down to 20mm because it’s close enough. Kit lenses are usually marked at 18 and 24, and you want to be somewhere between those, but it doesn’t matter that much exactly where you are.
