You can't apply economics of smartphones to these cameras. The expensive parts of a FF camera - sensor, shutter, optics - aren't getting cheaper nearly as fast as the expensive parts of a smartphone.

The argument is basically that Canon kind of shot themselves in the foot with EF-M so they *have* to bring out a truly entry-level RF-mount camera and phase out EF-M or they're fucked.

Nikon can come out with a cheap ZDX variant with no problem, and Sony already has E-mount cameras and lenses to funnel people up to FE, but Canon users who buy into the low-end EF-M system but want an upgrade path are basically fucked.

So Sony can stay with the status quo, and Nikon can basically stay with the status quo, but Canon needs to kill off their extra mount in such a way that their existing customers don't feel like they've been screwed. Releasing an APS-C RF-mount camera wouldn't do that--"Hey, you invested in our mirrorless first draft. Thanks. Now fuck you, we're going to abandon it". But phasing it out with a truly entry-level full-frame RF-mount camera won't do that nearly as much because it will appear like they're just giving you a really good value instead of like they're dropping existing customers.

All sony has to do is create a sensor with global shutter.

Not only it would decrease the cost of the camera as it wouldn't need a mechanical shutter anymore. But also would help with removing rolling shutter for increased video capability.

M cameras sell like fucking hot cakes. They are better P&S cameras than P&S cameras and also make great casual/travel kits for people who own higher end kits.

Canon needs to capitalize on this with more small, cheap, sharp glass like the 22mm. Any pro APS-C mirrorless stuff can go RF, but one does wonder if sensor fab prices are getting low enough to make pro APS-C just not worth it. I can certainly see M becoming the entry level consumer Rebel line and RF being everything else. How many Rebel soccer moms graduate to FF ever?

Sensor fabs are planned to run 24/7 for years to be profitable and they are costly to maintain. Because sales are decreasing, they have to do something to encounter running empty their old fabs that spout out sensors for their entry and enthusiast cameras. Now if Canon doesn't sell to other manufacturers, what are they gonna do? Easy! Cripple cameras with simple clicky colorful restricted user interface operation and have some cheap second generation tech in it, making it uninteresting for pros.
It's already highly debatable whether the RP is interesting for existing fullframe dslr users. Every restriction yells "buy yourself an EOS R" or, if you have more reason, "keep what you have", which does not satisfy the desire for something better, right? And finally IBIS will target 5DIV audience.

Smartphones are eating up the p&s and low-end camera market. I'll buy fullframe when the lenses are as lightweight and compact as those micro 4/3rds. And the laws of physics are kinda indicating that's not exactly realistic.

The entire reason I've avoided fullframe since selling off my 5Dmk2 and EF lenses is because of the size and weight of the lenses. It's not about camera size and weight, and it's not about price of cameras or lenses. It's about the complete lack of shoulder pain that I come home with after a day out with a half-dozen lenses in my bag.

We wont see $500 full frame for another 15 years at least. We are many years into digital photoghraphy and people still obsess about an ancient format, once the absolute standard for the plebiest of plebs, that is now suddenly a sensor that is a little larger than another, in practically the same body. Apparently it makes a 500$ difference. I don't know about you but I don't believe that a full frame sensor is much harder to produce than APS-C or any other common formats in general. We could have had $500 full frame 5 years ago no problem. But it will take many years of one company going $50 down, then another company undercutting, then another etc. until we reach that spot. But who knows when that will happen. Cameras are way overpriced and companies don't seem to care about making full frame available to anyone, or innovation in general.

That's the key element. Computational photography will increase the capability of smartphone cameras to - in a moderate zoom range - replace traditional APS-C cameras at the next step. Beginner cameras have to be reinvented to stay competetive against smartphones

The idea is that you sell a camera with low or no margin, then sell expensive lenses, flashes, etc with a big margin to make your profit.

Also, selling a camera that cheap gets people into your ecosystem, so when they want to upgrade to something better later, they’re more likely to buy your $3000 camera than someone else’s.

Current Honor and Xiaomi $350 mobiles lack details due to noise reduction and aren't reliable with non stationary objects, still the results are impressive, for DR even compared to fullframe single snaps. High end Huawei smartphones feature 40Mp cameras already. Let's either not use fake bokeh or be happy with it, let's use raws or auto processed jpg files, even photographers will be happy with the results, if the versatility that dedicated nterchangeable lens cameras provide isn't important for the shot.

Fucking cheq't and seconded. Cameras are expensive for a reason, there's constant competition to undercut competitors, and if a company could make money by selling a FF at $500 they would. Well get there eventually but it's gonna take a while.

It'll be similar to microprocessors. Think about what $300 got you in 1995 v today in terms of a computer processor.

Also: full frame sensors don’t require a more powerful processor, and even if it did, fast processors are cheap as hell in 2019.

Also also: IBIS is potentially something that would cost more for full frame, but presumably you could solve that by not having IBIS on a full frame camera intended for the $500 price point.

Sure you could probably make a full frame camera that is even more crippled than the EOS RP at 500$, but the manufacturer would make no profit off it, so it would be pointless for them.

He basically looks at part costs and added them up and is wondering why it doesn't exist, even a 12 year old could see that this doesn't make sense after thinking about it for a minute.

It works for the phone market where a Chinese manufacturer can swoop in and undercut apple/samsungs 40-60% profit margins and sell a phone that can do 90% of the same shit at 50% of the price, at a ~20% profit margin, but the camera market is much harder to break into.

Makes for good clickbait though.
