It seems like it would be more useful to take a RAW image and edit it in Lightroom.

Just bought a XT20 yesterday, they seem neat so far. I don't like editing things, and the fuji sims probably do stuff in camera that the knockoff lightroom sims don't.

In Capture One 12 they've baked the Fuji film simulations into the program so you can flick through them when editing your Fuji Raw files.

Capture One only works with certain models, and I think those film simulations work with Fuji only

This, it only pops up when it identifies it's a RAF file I think. Maybe there's a way to trick Capture One into thinking you're using a Fuji when you aren't.

Fuji sent Capture One the secret sauce to replicate how the simulations look so people can flick through them in post. Capture One is now the unofficial Fuji raw editor since CO supports all the Fuji cameras and lenses so well now. Adobe doesn't seem to have the same support.

Although I just got the thing a few months ago, it has two SD slots so I'm able to shoot RAW + JPEG film sims and compare the two. You can make it as subtle or as drastic as you want, it's pretty cool.
Also pretty nice to give yourself some ideas of how you might want to edit shit.
I'll throw a few examples/comparisons between the two in here.

I use capture one & apply the film simulation to the raw file, then make adjustments, luminosity masks etc from there. The film sims are a nice starting point, especially the monochrome ones.

I used them for years when I had Fujifilm. I only use JPGs as I have no reason to use RAW.

I'm looking to get into photo editing more though, does anyone have any simple photo editors they recommend?

Either way it's learning a new program. Just learn something.

No matter the program it's going to be a rectangular marquee and then going into the menus to click crop.

I mainly use VSCO on my iPad nowadays. It’s just a bit of a pain to get photos in and off if it though as the Olympus app only sends small files.

dxo photolab, capture one, lightroom... it doesn't get simpler than that, you might as well learn one of them. Free ones like Darktable are a bit harder to learn, but you've everything there as well. But if you're just doing jpegs you might as well try something like Faststone. I used it all the time for cropping, and it's ok at doing some quick fixes.

Also you can edit in camera their simulations for something you like more. like colours hue, contrast, sharpness etc..

Is there a specific aspect of the Kodak slide films you're trying to emulate?
I like what the 'Classic Chrome' simulation does to the colors. Warm colors get pushed towards a brick-red, and blues like the sky go towards cyan instead of azure. When I want that classic look I just use the simulation with no tweaks.
Remember though that WB shift or exposure compensation will have more of an effect than your choice of film simulation. This had -2/3 exposure, and a red shift on auto WB.

yeah i really like classic chrome, and i think i push the WB shift towards like +4 red and -2 blue or something like that, but also wondering what +/- to use for the highlights and shadows. for the exposure compensation do you do it while you're shooting or do you do it with the raw conversion? also, why would you -2/3 it? so highlights are less likely to be blown out?

I actually am not an aggie, alumni or otherwise lol. Actually am a CSUS alumni (business major, massive mistake) but enjoy the Davis campus much more. I've taken a few drives out recently from Sac and just like walking around taking pictures of shit. Fun little city, great campus. Moving out of Sac soon but hope to go back to Davis soon as well since I still won't be too far away.

I don't mess with raw, this is SOOC jpeg, all I did was crop and straighten it. I didn't adjust any of the tuning parameters like highlight/shadow, color, etc. (although I always have NR at -4), just CC film simulation. I pushed the WB shift to red since there's a lot of brick buildings in that part of town so I really wanted to have everything nice and warm in the sun.
I probably had it set at -2/3 (in camera) to avoid any glaring highlights, and it helps bring out the color a little bit.
Another preset I use is CC, with -2 shadow and -3 color for shooting harsh contrast scenes at night. Give it a little underexposure and you get soft but detailed shadows, and I love what CC does with the colors of artificial lighting. This is a crappy picture, but maybe it shows what I mean.

First question, it is that good. And second question, of course you can achieve exactly the same in Lightroom, Photoshop or any other image editing program, it's just more work.

Because that's what all this actually is about; the digital workflow allows you to create ANYTHING, the real difficulty lies in getting there, they are shortcuts to good-looking and useable results.

In the end, all that talk about "color science" and "Film Simulations" is kinda laughable, because they are just filters. But filters are not always a bad thing when you don't think fucking around with one picture is a productive use of your time.

If you really want to use film simulation you can set it in Lightroom at least when editing raw files. I never do it, but it's possible.
