What is the best all-purpose lens (new or used) I can purchase for my entry-level Canon at a reasonable price?

18-55 IS.

The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 is also pretty good, although a little bit less versatile.

90% of my stuff is shot with a t6 and 24mm f/2.8
Thinking about getting the "nifty fifty" as a cheap one for low light city stuff. usually browse craigslist and offerup for deals on good glass.

all-purpose lens aint exist. either f1 or offroad, choose you lens carefully, it could be your last lens

buy standart things: 50 1.8 / 1.4

and some decent zoom (18-55mm or else). i dont know which is good and cheap at canon crops cause i dont use canon crops but google and get some decent glass for 200-300 bucks

also used 70-300 cost 30 bucks. go and get it. from this kit you would understand what exactly you need and move that way.

maybe buy better 50mm like 50 1.2 or 24-70 2.8 and consider full frame but all that descisions you can make on this basic and decent kit

you're using it wrong

use it in proper light. you can get really good results from f/8-f/11. it's not fantastic in low-light, but it's better than your average phone

Seriously, when I was starting out I was told constantly to ditch the kit-lens (18-55 IS v1) by armchair photographers and DXO sharpness wankers, but after I took it overseas a couple of times, stopped down the lens when I used it, and actually got decent results. Actually is alright to use in the studio too!

is it as good as a decent prime? hell no. but it gets the job done

Yep. Some of my favorite pictures I took using the 18-55 kit lens. As you say, as long as there’s enough light it’s quite a nice piece of equipment, especially if you’re just starting out.

in all of this cases kit lens is trash. even with closed to

aperture it can handle some results especially with tripod but handheld it just wouldnt deliver picture that you await from DSLR and there is no sense to pay for DSLR and then shoot with kit lens, cheers.

but any used cheap good lens but throw away kit lens ples

If you're a poorfag or just really budget conscious, look into the Yongnuo Canon lenses. They make a 50mm f1.4 you can pick up for very cheap on eBay or Aliexpress.

As well as their 50mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8 Mark II they also make a 35mm and a 100mm I think among others. All well regarded and cheap.

Can't say anything about their 50mm lenses, but I bought a 35mm f2 from them and it's complete utter trash. It constantly front focuses if you use it under f3.2 and the aperture mechanism broke twice for me; it simply wouldn't stop down anymore.

That's a shame, that's the risk with chink lenses. There's a LOT of sample variation depending on which 5 year old child assembled it in the sweatshop. Sort of like buying Soviet lenses. You never know what you'll get.

I haven't tested it on another body but I have a theory that it's not very compatible with my eos 400d since it's really old at this point. It would probably work a lot better with a newer body.

Also I heard a lot more good things about their 50mm lenses, so if you have 100 bucks to gamble it's worth a try.

Did you try updating the firmware on it? They roll out firmware updates quite a lot if it's one of the newer models with a USB port on it. I know the 50mm f1.8 II has had a ton of updates since release.

Doesn't have an USB port unfortunately. I got my money back while keeping the lens so it's all right.

My advice for anyone who wants to buy one of their lenses or any cheap 3rd party lens is to read the reviews. I remember that a lot of people were saying that it front focuses a lot and if your camera doesn't have microadjustments it's not worth buying but I didn't listen to them.

Nifty 50 is great even on crop and so is the EF-S 24mm for zooms the cheapest decent lens with IS is the EF 70-300 IS II USM which runs around 500$

anything substantially better your looking at L series lenses

The old 18-55 non-IS kit lens was a piece of crap and almost unusable. The newer 18-55 IS kit lens (550d onwards?) on the other hand has a very good reputation. (Never used the new one, but its widely praised).

Save up a bit for a tamron 24-70 2.8 VC USD and you'll most likely never need another lens. It's got image stabilisation but it still goes down to f/2.8 across the whole range so you can use it handheld in pretty much any situation. If 1/5 sec shutter at f/2.8 and ISO 3200 isn't enough you need a tripod. It's a bit pricey compared to *cheap* lenses but it's better to buy one exceptionally versatile lens that you can just leave on your camera for ~$550-600 than 3 different primes for $100-200 each that you'll be too lazy to carry with you and swap all the time.
