Really like how compact 6x9 zeiss folders are, but the Novar Anastigmat is pretty shit. Any way to upgrade it? Are Tessars much better? Can it be retrofitted? Or have someone completely replace the glass with modern optics?

Regular Tessar are better, especially at larger aperture but probably not by much when stopped down to f8 or further. Coated Tessar are significantly better at all aperture.

I'm pretty sure you could swap the optics, there is a guy on ebay who has been selling fodders he CLA'd for years. Some camera he sold even has the optics swapped. But the cost of doing it is probably too high if you can't do it yourself, also you still need a similar camera with better optics in the first place anyway. Just watch out for a coated Tessar 6x9 like what I'm doing.

I intend to sell my Contax SLR system and instead invest the money in a better quality digital camera and one or two native lenses. However, I'd still like to have a film compact, as that was what I originally had in mind when I started with film. I have a pretty standard Olympus mju Zoom which is fun but a little soft and only usable in good weather.

Are there any above average zoom compacts in the 35-70mm range that are purchasable for around 150 euro? I've only been able to find cheap stuff from Nikon and Minolta with so few lens elements that they must be soft as hell, as well as ugly 90's designs from Canon. Someone besides Contax and Leica must have made a good quality short zoom compact of reasonable aperture?

I own the 67ii in that picture, I bought it after using a 6x7 for a bit. First up, 6x7 has two versions - there's an MLU and non-MLU. The MLU version is nearly identical to the later 67. If you have to get an old model try for the 67 since it's less likely to have been beat down through years of professional use.

As for the 67ii:

Still only shoots 10 frames per roll of 120. The only difference is if you have 220, then you get 21 frames. Good luck finding 120 film. You can also do double exposures on the 67ii (lol). In addition to bulb it's also got a T mode for super long exposures so you don't drain the battery.

It has changeable groundglass but the split prism one is stupid expensive and the others just add grid lines. They made some bright screens but apparently those darken the corners on wide angles and are aimed more for slow telephotos. Either way, the default focusing screen is about 1-2 stops brighter on the 67ii than on the 6x7, which helps when you stop down for DOF preview. Speaking of the viewfinder - the viewfinder in the AE prism on the 67ii is a bit smaller magnification than the 6x7 TTL prism, so you don't have to strain your eyes as hard to check the corners. I like the 67ii viewfinder a lot more, you still get that "pop" when you're focusing but it's easier to compose with.

The right hand grip is really nice and it's got a thumbrest on the back. Those make it a bit easier to steady the camera with larger lenses/filters, and in general it's easier to hold it in your hands for longer. Not to say there's anything wrong with the 6x7, you can handhold it comfortably too since it's so beefy. If anything, you could just buy a 3rd party right hand grip and slap it on the 6x7 if not having a grip is the issue. Just be aware that on the 67ii, you don't have strap lugs on the right hand side anymore so you can't use a waist level finder and let it hang from your neck like on the 6x7.

The main difference between them is the 67ii’s AE prism. If you’re going to shoot without using the metered prism, just get the older version. The AE prism has spot, center, and matrix metering while the 6x7 TTL prism just has average metering. The AE prism’s center option is very similar to the TTL metering, so really you’re just paying for the ability to do spot and matrix metering, as well as an exposure compensation dial up to 3 stops.

The matrix metering is fantastic, I have a sekonic spotmeter I’ve been comparing to and the AE is dead-on every time, even in high contrast lighting. The spot meter function is similarly great, it’s the size of the center spot on the focusing screen on each lens I’ve used. The metering readout in the prism viewfinder actually tells you how much you’re underexposing or overexposing for a given shutter speed. So if you want to use the zone system or if you want to really check if your highlights/shadows fall within a certain EV range, then you can flip to the spot meter mode and check very accurately. Pic related.

One of the best things about the AE prism on the 67ii is that you can use aperture priority, which can set the shutter speeds to half stops and can also go past the 4 second manual limit. So you can just put the thing in matrix mode and set your aperture to whatever you want. It’ll print out the shutter speed you’re using in aperture so you don’t go around shooting at slow speeds. So use it to get a ballpark exposure, then go back to spot mode and check around your scene and see if anything will blow out or go to black.

The 6x7 meter is decent but can get fooled. Mine typically leans towards underexposure in high contrast situations, which can be annoying. The center area that it averages is not very obvious. The metering dial doesn’t really tell you how much you’re overexposed or underexposed past a stop. And it definitely won’t tell you the shutter speed you’re on.

Bottom line, I feel like the ergonomics aren’t as big of a selling point for the 67ii as online reviews tend to make them out to be. The grip is definitely nice but you can get a 3rd party attachment on the 6x7. Other than that, the main difference on the body is that it’s a lot easier to pop open the film door without busting your fingernail – the 67ii has a sliding latch.

The main difference is going to be the AE prism. The AE prism won’t work on older models, and the TTL prism won’t work on the 67ii. If you don’t want a metered prism then don’t get the 67ii. The AE prism is what makes using the 67ii so much nicer than any other 6x7 or 6x6 camera, nothing else has aperture priority with matrix metering. Pic related was shot through a red filter on matrix metering and aperture priority, and I didn't do anything to the exposure in scanning or play with the curves in lightroom. It holds up really well for high contrast scenes, it's nice to have your camera do all the work for you.

In terms of where to buy the 67ii, don’t look at eBay, where people try to sell it for over $2k which is ridiculous. KEH actually has reasonable prices for the 67ii. I paid like 800 for the body and 430 for the prism there.

I don't think that's the case, I zoomed the picture in and found that there's little to no motion blur. It just seemed that way because thumbnails and you aren't sure what is in the photo. But I know what I took so it looked right even if blurry.

No, the camera is a Rollei 35S with leaf shutter. This is the 3rd roll of film I shoot with this camera. There was no issue with the first 2 rolls.

Fuck it is driving me insane. I sent it to a lab in another country for development & scan so I can't check the negative.

I shot some 800 ASA film for the first time, and I'm not sure how much I fucked up with the low light shots.

The light meter was giving readings that the overall light was way too low, and that even 1/30 wasn't enough, which is fair, aside from the fact that I was in decently lit areas in London at night.

Is this something I should expect with 800? Longer shutter speeds in low light?

Yeah, the readings were accurate then. Nothing weird with my light meter. I guess I'll see how things turn out once I get the last few shots in and send it off to get developed. Wasn't really sure what to expect with 800. 160/200/400 are what I usually use

depends on the model, i was pretty suprised that leica m ranefinders are pretty much the same size as a classic slr (only slightly smaller since they don´t have the pentaprism on top). I´ve been shooting a digital gr a lot, so when i first shot a leica, i really wasn´t impressed by the size and shutter sound. But there are also rangefinders that are way smaller than the leicas

Decent for the eyes is not decent for film mate.
Eyes adjust and can have tremendous sensitivity in low light.

Unless you're right under the Piccadilly lights, you can expect to be shooting at f/2 and 1/30 at best, with ISO 800.
Usually in situations like this, I use B&W film because the light is shitty to begin with (yellow tungsten puke), and also since with B&W you can get an extra stop of true sensitivity, and a bit more if you don't mind pushing.

Picrelated is under "strong" street lights (staying almost under the lightpole), ISO800 f/2 and 1/25 or 1/50.
Unless you have some dank strong neons in your frame, I wouldn't bother with colour under artificial light. The only semi viable option is Kodak's cine tungsten film, 500T.

yea, I understand that having no mirror slapping up and down, plus the leaf shutter makes it a quiet package. but size-wise, the ones I've seen are pretty much on pair with regular SLR, or just slightly smaller. so it always seems odd to me when people say they become invisible while wielding a rangefinder rather than an SLR.
then again, I've never shot with one so dunno if that lack of shutter noise do really make a difference in people not noticing you while shooting outside.

What film did you use and what was the exposure? Some films, especially high ISO ones, have poor reciprocity; what this means is that you often can't get a picture (at least not easily) in a scenario which requires a slow shutter speed. Leaf shutters are a funny beast. Whenever I use mirror lockup on my RZ it becomes really clear that the entire reason the camera is noisy is the mirror flipping away. The leaf shutter is extremely quiet by comparison.

Soviet Union wasn't affluent when it came to consumer products, the only reason something expensive like a camera wouldn't be used and used and repaired so it can be used some more, is if it was faulty from the factory and forgotten in a shelf.

Of course, many were destroyed not by abuse, but retarded storage conditions, as people at some point thought they were worthless so they just stowed them away with other shit they didn't need.

But you can still find some examples in good condition. The only thing prone to failure is the leatherette unsticking, which is easily replaceable by real leather.
Otherwise, the chrome finish, lens coatings, etc. are fine - as long as they're not abused.

Alright so first of the camera does not affect the image at all. The lens can have an effect on the image but the grain is down to the film itself and how it was developed. Technically also the light but don't @me.

Hell yeah mother fucker. The best recommendation would be to either ask around and see if anyone has an old camera they can give you (parents, grandparents, friends parents etc.) OR go to a few thrift shops and look for stuff. I can almost guarantee they will have a few 80's and 90's SLR's (They're all pretty good). Find one with a 50-ish-mm lens and report back here if you have more questions.

You can. Pushing increases contrast, but also grain. The latter is still ok when pushing Colorplus a single stop. Overexposing without pulling gives you better shadow detail, but possibly lower contrast. It's quite hard to overexpose color negative film to a level at which highlights blow.

The colours are fine anon. It (her face) is just a bit underexposed. It was a contrasty scene and you prioritised highlights, which makes sense for slides. This means the shadows will go quite dark, and her face is in the shadow, especially her eyesockets.

But the parts that are not too dark look fine to me, for instance the skintone of her hand, her hair, the green vegetation etc.

I usually post here, share with friends, or the odd photo society in Unis etc. .
The problem is, online platforms with active communities are shit in every other way - for instance IG is drowned in ads and bots, on top of the shitty algorithms "optimising" your feed, which are susceptible to abuse. On top of being owned by FB and datamining the shit out of you, your follower/following patterns, interests etc. .

But maybe I'll give it another try.

What giannis said. However...the colors are "fine" for Provia but this is why you wouldn't use Provia to photograph people without exceptional control over the lighting. Having the person underexposed just exasperated the problem.

One of the things I wish someone had driven home with me when I was shooting 35mm (before DSLRs were a thing) was that certain films really were for certain subjects under certain lighting scenarios. Velvia and Provia were not sunny mid day films and were not people films. Astia was my favorite all around slide film because it could handle a wide range of situations well. Velvia and Provia were magic under the right conditions, and shit otherwise.

tl;dr - use Provia when you have a specific matching scene in mind. A magic hour landscape, for example. Don't use it for random people shots. Astia is long discontinued so use something flexible like Portra for random generic shit. This is where interchangeable backs or having two bodies comes in handy.

What exactly makes it more work for the lab to scan slide film and films like rollei retro 80s? The order note says "Not scannable! Must be scanned with manual mask..."

If I wanted it scanned and printed it totals to 45€, while c41 is about 26€. Paid 12€ for dev only.

While the Pentax 67 105 2.4 is really fast I hear it's pretty soft. Mamiya has a similar lens, the 110 2.8. It's a bit slower but as far as I can tell quite a bit sharper so you can actually use it wide open a bit.
645 and 6x6 systems have some F2 glass or even faster which is also a very fair option.

A great and affordable option for good bokeh in MF is the 180mm f/2.8 sonnar. Both in quantity and quality of blur.

I'm not a big fan of the Pentacon Six though (or the Pentax 67 for that matter).

It's pretty nice in my opinion. It's my go to since it has good to great resolution, has solid saturation, and pretty good dynamic range. I scan with a 24mp camera and the film seems to be about the same res as the camera.

Is the film seated in slide frames? If so it has to be loaded frame by frame into the lab scanner mask. Film still in strip form can be wound through the scanner automatically if you have the right accessory, generating previews quickly upon which adjustments can be based before setting the full detail scanning process off with no human interaction. Scanning slides can be very time consuming.On our Fuji Frontier it was something like 1-3 slides a minute depending on adjustments required.

This pair of swans arrived at the lake near my house last month, I wanted to pet them so bad so I began feeding them everyday and tried to get as close as possible. I also just acquired a Praktica LTL with 29mm lens in mint condition for 30 bucks so I took one photo of them each day to test the camera.

First week I faced frequent beak and wing attacks as I tried to approach them.

In 2-3 weeks they became familiar and could recognize me from afar when I'm walking toward the lake and would swim to the bank waiting, but still hesitating to get close.

After a month the male swan stopped making noises and raising its wings in a threatening manner, it once flew from the other side of the lake to me and poked my pocket looking for food. It really felt good to be trusted by them, as other people in the area also fed them but if they even come within 5 meter proximity the swans would return to water to avoid them.

I was able to pet the male swan finally, but the female stayed wary. Nevertheless It felt good (fluffy). That was also the day I send this roll of film to lab for processing.

The day the lab emailed me these scans was also the day these swans flew away, chased away by a newly arrived pair of ugly trumpeter.

Feel a little sad man ;_: I was looking toward to staying as a swan buddy even during their nesting and raising cygnets phase.

After a little trial and error I'm happy with the exposure. Time to get printing the latest batch.

Decided to go with a card mask and put a pane of glass over top to keep everything flat. Hopefully the edges will be sharper this time

I just got some chemicals to try developing for the first time. Since the developing chemicals arrive in thin plastic bottle when you buy them, it's best that I pour all of it to a dark glass bottle for maximum shelf life right?

Nope. What chemicals? It's the air in the vessel that ultimately leads to oxidation. Keep the concentrates in the bottles they came in. Dilute prior to use. And use your chems promptly.

There is no point buying more than you can use in a short period of time.

I would probably avoid the tvs digital. It definitely shows its age. Af is slow and start up time is probably like 4-5 seconds.

Velvia is extremely THICC to the point that Plustek's backlight can't deal with the shadows. E100 is less of a hassle to deal with so I think I'll stick to that for the coming summer.

Just developed my first roll of film and it sucked (HP5+ with Rodinal 1+50 in 24 mins, inversion agitation for 30 seconds every minute, tapping the tank twice each time to reduce bubbles).

There appears to be huge dark bar on the negative, except the last frame. I'm not sure if this is the camera fault or developing issue, it's a Zeiss Ikonta and this was the first roll of film shoot with it too.

There's also drying marks on the film even though I used a wetting agent (3 drops of Tetenal Mirasol in 500ml water).

Is it ok to rewash the film at this point? what can I do to make the experience less shitty next time?

The appearance of your light leaks depends on the amount and direction of light at the location where you are taking photos.

Indeed, check if the bellows are light tight. They may be loose by the looks of it. Re-washing at this stage should not be a problem.

You are right, just scanned some frames to check. The black paint on the back of the camera are all gone and it looks shiny as fuck in full chrome, I thought it wouldn't matter too much but when the film counter window is opened, light get in and cause a huge mess.

Try DLSR scanning with a desk lamp, You can really push through those velvia blacks by just getting a really bright light. This negative looked unusably black on a light table for example.

This was the version with the amber coloring corrected on the film. I uploaded the wrong version.

I think that photo would have been helped by a yellow filter, a UV filter and/or a polarizing filter.

There's a reason the boomer forefathers had tons of filters to use with their cameras.

An old folder like that will get you 35mm detail lv on a 6x9 negative. Tessars are much better than anastigmats, triplets etc but I'd just skip it altogether. There are much better options image quality wise.

Which 28? A lot of older / lower quality 28s will have that problem. I guess as long as you keep it in to account it's workable.

For cheap/older SLR lenses, yes.
Some have less barrel distortion, but you pay for it. Olympus wides are usually good enough, and Zeiss Distagons the best.

Rangefinder wides usually don't have this problem, or have it in a much, much smaller extent.

MD mount Tokina 28mm f2.8 that came with this Minolta XG1 I picked up. I have a Canon mid range zoom that goes out to 28, but I doesn't seem to be this wonky and LR has a correction profile for it anyway.
