Hey /p/.
I have a question regarding image stabilization.

I own an Olympus em5 mII and want to buy either the 12-100mm f4 with IS or the 12-40mm f2.8 without IS.

The only deciding factor is wether or not the dual IS with the 12-100 is worth it.

How much better than the build in ibis is it actually?

Personally I think 12-100 is a stellar all arounder, but that f4 is hurting its usefulness at times. You should consider this. Carrying f4 plus another fast lens. Or carrying f2.8 with another telephoto lens.

with the dual IS you will get +1 stop compared to the 12-40 but imo the IBIS alone is already godlike on olympus bodys, even on my M10 II's.
plus f/4 might feel really really slow.

I heard stories of 3 or 4 stops more.
Guess I nearly fell for the "You can handhold a 4 second exposure" meme.

I'm really concerned about the f4...
Had an APS-C cam before and used it with an 28-105mm f3.8-5.6 Sigma lens. Had to constantly bump up ISO to above 1600, because the sky is always grey here...

4sec on 100mm, that's probably impossible no matter what. 4sec on 14mm, maybe?
I can get quality shot on a sec with regular body stab, and I can get blurry mess on 0.4 sec in same situation. There's a lot of trial and error, and a fair bit of luck involved. Just be prepared to take a lot of shots.
