>>3458507this situation is what exposure compensation is for- the meter will adjust the exposure according to the large, bright background but your subject is small and dark in the scene. here you would want to go +1 maybe +1.5 stops and that well expose your subject properly instead of the background. also, if you shoot raw and use lightroom or something, you could recover some of the subject's detail lost in shadow.
