THE ANON WAS SAYING IN THE OTHER THREAD THAT IF SOME PHOTOG HAVE GOOD PHOTOS AND SOME OTHER PHOTOG HAVE DECENT PHOTOS WITH ELABORATIVE EXPLANATION THE MOST CHANCES ARE THAT THE PHOTOG WITH DESCRIPTION WILL GET PUBLISH.

Some photos are probably just very pretty/conventionally interesting, i.e. pictures of the northern lights. They don't need much explanation. Others can be seen as needing exposition because they're not as conventionally attractive or understood, like the new topographic image you used to host this thread.

Above are great writings imo

Photographs are not simple things, yet they simultaneously are. Not just abstracted from symbols used to denote concepts but abstracted from words that invoke concepts derived from these symbols they exist on a higher degree of abstraction, and their ontology is perpetually changing depending on your approach (window or flat surface etc etc) . >>3456855 said that some images require elaboration (or perhaps more appropriately a degree of visual literacy) in order to comprehend them, but I think that sometimes understanding why conventional images function as they do is a far more intimidating and sometimes much more unpleasant task once history starts to worm its way in (like how Edwards points out that many archivists and curators have more or less looked for pith helmets and the "symbols of colonialism" in their work, but of course sometimes these generic markers just aren't in the pictures, and so our prejudices make for ahistorical readings). This simple/not simple distinction allows for very basic/intuitive understanding as well as more complex engagements.

idk think of it like how Mark Fisher more or less articulated his weird brand of social theory using his blog entries about techno. You can quite easily make the jump from The Caretaker to hauntology if you understand your audience and the material.

Ok I’ll bite..

I made some poems to accompany a few series of mine. They are very old and a lot of the vocabulary is New Zealandcentric, but the idea was that I wanted some text to accompany the images. I didn’t want to explain anything, but I wanted some form of context maybe slightly abstracted.

It’s funny this thread showed up because I’ve been thinking about this today. I just finished Hemingway’s - In our time (great read btw) and was thinking of actually writing some semi fictional short stories based on reality to accompany the series I haven’t posted to my website yet.
