Just bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and the camera app sucks. There is a beautify filter that can't be turned off.
What is the best camera app for Android?

It can be turned off though
It's off by default when using the rear camera and using the front camera gives you four several settings for it
Entirely OFF and 3 levels of beautify along with an advanced mode with sliders

Make sure you've got the latest updates installed.

Source, I've got a Note 4 as well.

don't worry about, it's just at the edge of being "usable" and I carry my actual camera everywhere I go so I don't have to use that godawful camera ever again.

Why would one want to do long exposures if you're sensor is as small as 1/2.5'? It's warranted that one will get lots of noise

A longer exposure leads to both averaging noise and lower iso numbers. The high end phones do a great job stabizing the wide angle range and in fact google night sight is one example where handheld 6 second exposures lead to great results

Phone camera quality is directly proportional to price, sorry. It's one of the few things newer phones consistently outpace older phones on - even ignoring all the stupid multi lens setups the more powerful processors in newer phones allow better software processing.

As much as I hate to suggest them for lots of other reasons, iphones have good cameras. Even a 6.

Google's 1st gen pixel should also be pretty good and a bit cheaper now it's been out a few years.

He's probably used his phone to take a RAW image considering it was edited in RawTherapee. It's always going to be higher quality than a JPG.

You can unlock the ability to shoot RAW by installing a custom bootloader and enabling the latest CameraApi. I just went the full hog and flashed on Lineage OS too, works great now.

No, I only used rawtherapee to resize it. The original from the phone was a jpeg, but it was a hint over 5mb in size, so not exactly appropriate for this board. I didnt edit it at all.

Yeah, Lineage is such a huge step up from MiUI, especially in that it unlocks the full potential of the camera. I couldn't really go back to the stock rom at this point.
