looking for some help as I try to troubleshoot this Maxxum 7000. I realized about half way through this roll of tx100 that the meter was underexposing everything by about a stop. so I got back the scans today and I have some underexposed, some correctly exposed, and then the last 7 exposures I don't understand...

What are you scanning on?
Also, to fix the histogram, go to the curves panel and drag the black point (the lower left one) to the right until it's touching the background histogram. You can do the same for the white point, and the histogram should fill the frame now.

i don't know the technical details about the scanner, it was done by my local small time film lab.

so it was the scan then, and not the camera. >>3458536 looks normal.

i'm embarrassed to admit i don't actually know how to move the black point in lightroom but i'll google it. thanks anon

It might be that camera, that's usually how the scans look if the negative is really underexposed. You should try to compare what the camera meter says with the one from a digital body, so you would know for sure it's the body not the scan. Also, have you used that lab before for scanning and have the scans turned out ok?

To switch modes in the curves panel you just click the lower right button.
Could you maybe upload the original file of one of the scans? Maybe the scanner model is embedded in the EXIF data.

Is this amount of grain normal for 100 speed BW film? It's AGFA APX 100.
Sadly I don't know the dev details since the lab handled that, but I figured ISO 100 film would be finer grain, since even cheap color films I've used like fuji c200

thanks. yes i have used that lab before but mostly for color negative which have come back fine. i just tried metering a scene from where i'm sitting 50mm lens f2.8 iso 400 and it said 1/15 second, same settings same lens on canon eos 620 said 1/8.

It seems that it's under exposing by one stop, which shouldn't look that bad straight out of the scanner so I don't really know what happened, you should try shooting a cheap color film as a test in that same camera and scan that to see if you get similar results.

Oh well, at least the scans can be corrected to look like they should by setting the black and white points accordingly and maybe brightening them up with a third point, but that's personal preference at that point.

What light source and color model are you using?
I can't seem to get good results with nlp, always having the blues being turned into cyan and such with the default frontier setting.

using a artograph 920 lightpad, canon 5d mk ii with a 100mm f2.8 i believe. this was with frontier scanner and i believe i set the color model to fuji.

yeah, thanks for the help. it's an autowinding camera and it sounded like the batteries were run down towards the end so i changed them and cleaned the contacts really well, i don't know if that could have affected anything.

i'm going to keep an eye out for another a mount body though as i have a number of lenses, maybe something less plastic like a 9000

It's 100% the black point not being set correctly in the scanner software. Most probably it was left on auto so it just "guessed" the blackpoint, that's why you got that milky look.

Check if there are drivers for your OS. I had one of the older models and had to tinker with the driver files to get it running.

In that case it's an ok scanner that delivers mediocre quality for 35mm, but works well with 120.

anyone knows how the Mamiya C330 and its lenses compare to those of Bronica SQ, in terms of size?

I love my SQ, but it's such an inconvenience to carry the body with 3 lenses (80, 50 and 150). Thinking of switching to Mamiya, since TLR lenses must be smaller?

It isn’t that bad on the ETR.

ETR is only slightly smaller than the SQ, but it really makes a difference.

Should I do the Mamiya 645 or rb67? Save up for a bentax? Or go ultimate hipster and get TLR?

I think any medium format system should satisfy your image quality requirements. A TLR should be pretty relaxing in a lot of ways. I'd consider it. I use a mamiya 67 and they are pretty damn heavy. A TLR would be nice for a walk around camera.

Saturate your sensor for the most possible data to work with. Basically go up to the point of clipping the highlights but not over. Look at the histogram, not the lightmeter.

Highlight clipping refers to going over the right side of the histogram. The photosites on your sensor are like little solar panels that each give you a reading of how much electric charge they got. But if you charge them too much they will simply say "more than x", so basically pure white. You won't have any other information like what the color of the light was, what the relative brightness was compared to the rest of the image, just that it's too bright to register. If there's a sudden cutoff to the right of your histogram that's what's happening.
Going too high on the histogram never happened to me but I guess that would be saturation clipping, like if all the red photosites were fully charged in an area but the blue and green ones weren't.

I got a bunch of Zeiss Ikon orange/green/yellow filter 40.5mm size. What camera lenses use these? I only know that Franka Solida, Contax IIa 50/1.5, Jupiter 8 are of this filter size. Trying to decide if I should keep them for future use or sell them.

40.5mm is common in non-collapsible Soviet rangefinder lenses and various other knick-knacks from over there. Konica also made some M-mount stuff with a 40.5mm thread. If those are modern, as for the Zeiss Ikon M-mount stuff, they're worth keeping if and only if you can't sell them for more than B&W or Heliopan or Hoya would sell for, or intend to use them with glass that isn't shit. If they're old, only shoot them with glass that's shit.

Filter quality matters surprisingly little, as long as it's not Chinese "put colur in yur pohtoes!" grade of ebay bullshit.

Not tooo bad but you may as well spend ~125 on an older dedicated 35mm scanner. My Scan Dual IV was cheap because it doesn't have ICE (you just need to take good care of your negatives) and gives more than satisfying results at 3200 dpi with no hassle and unattended scanning 6 frames on a strip at a time.

Digital camera scan is way better than a Plustek 8200i SE/Epson V850 let alone a shitty 125 bux scanner. And the Plustek or Epson takes forever to scan a frame at maximum dpi.

That is only with mediocre macro lens, crop sensor and light source. If you invest in a good macro lens and light source then nothing below a drum scanner could compete. With a decent setup it takes like 10 mins to scan an entire roll of 135 or less than 5 mins for 120.

If you're are autistic about quality and has the money to blow: a scanner lens procured from broken Nikon Coolscan 9000 or Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 adapted to A7R3 with pixel shift feature enabled, or at least Zeiss APO 100/2 macro lens on an equally autistic stand and good flash / Rotolight 2 as lightsource. Bonus point is you can actually use the A7R3 for non meme photography.

More agfa 1035 snaps. Light was middling to poor and I have no idea how I not only nailed the living fuck out of guess-focusing, but the camera also ponied up with enough depth-of-field to get all of this shite in sharp enough focus to tell it's the "wet dogshit season" sort of unpleasant. actual scan speed might not be that efficient, takes nearly 2 mins to do the RAWs at highest resolution, but having it running and scanning takes no time. I don't have to mess with some support setup for the camera, lightsources or something to keep the negatives flat.

altough, investing in a good macro lens and lightsource would be a pretty good idea. you'd be able to make money doing product photography, instead of having a rectangle that just scans film...

Not if you're shooting both 135 or 120 (or larger) format. You'd have to get 2 different scanners just for some mediocre and slow scans. At that point dslr or mirrorless scan is really attractive.

Phone, ipad, cheap light table, cheap led light is really bad for colors. Firstly the CRI (color rendering index) is shit so obviously you're not getting accurate colors. Secondly they're not bright enough so you have to use slow shutter speed which introduces sensor noise.

Just get any cheap flash, they offer highest CRI rating after natural light.

Quite a few, but seeing they were from zeiss, most of the Contax bayonet mount lenses were that filter size.

The f/2 50mm Sonnar, the f/1.5 Sonnar, the 35mm f/2.8 Biogon (prewar) all used 40.5mm filters.
Also that goes for the russian clones, Jupiter-3, Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-12. And also the later Helios 103 (that's a model name, it's 50-53mm actually) f/1.8.

If you have a Contax camera or plan on having one keep them. It's not like you'd get much money for them, and it's nice to have period-correct accessories. Also their build quality is great, definitely above the cheap aluminum filters.

I just set it to scan while I watch netflix, changing whenever the scanner gets quiet.

Not the most time efficient way, but it works. And the pictures are pretty much ready to use straight out the scanner.

it was actually an accident- i was shooting a minolta srt i just bought with a 1.5v alkaline battery and didn't realize how far the metering was off until about halfway through the roll

wasn't actually that bad. some shots are dark without a lot of shadow detail, but overall didn't look bad or excessively grainy

I just took a pic of the film strip as it was hung up to dry. I held a second phone with a pure white background behind it for illumination. Then I straightened the frame a bit with snapseed and adjusted the curves like so. It still needs some wb adjustment after this because of the orange cast from the film.

Is the quality of the shutter button the same among all the models of the Olympus XA/2/3? I've had 2 olympus XA's before and both had very shitty shutter buttons that only worked 80% of the time. If only the button were responsive, it would be my favorite compact camera. Is this problem as common with say the olympus xa3?

Not really. Tiny 35mm compacts are either expensive or thicc like a Leica but narrower and lighter. I'd tell you what I'm using right now but I'm afraid of meming it into expensiveness for having done that. Fortunately most people aren't into zone focusing.

Just got a Yashica Electro 35 as my first film camera & rangefinder.
There is an ASA dial thing on the top, can I use this to set the camera to shoot at 100 iso even though I might be using 400 film?
It's aperture priority and I wanna have it at 1.7 for most of my shots for MUH BOKEH, seems like the only other way to control exposure is to use that ASA dial.

Composition is messy, the subject is obviously supposed to be the statue but the eye is drawn away by the window. That only an awkward wedge of the window is in frame makes this worse.

Oppositely those stone heads on the left take up a large part of the frame but I didn’t even notice them for like 10 seconds because the contrast is so low.

Either get closer to the statue so it’s the only thing in the shot, or back up to get a sense of a small statue in a wide open space. The window needs to be either out of the shot entirely, or look like it’s actually supposed to be in frame instead of just awkwardly peeking partway in.

I got given some rolls of ekta 64, exp 1980, never freezer stored. My general rule for negative film is to overexpose 1 stop for every 10 years expired and out of the freezer, maybe pull a little too. Does this apply for slide?

Dude I LOVE taking pictures of old cars on FILM with my FILM SLR! There's nothing like snapping a closeup shot of some HEADLIGHTS or TAIL FINS on FILM. I mostly use portra 400, but my absolute FAVOURITE film of all time is something called Agfa Vista 400. You probably haven't heard of it, it's an obscure EXPIRED FILM. I always OVEREXPOSE by two stops for thar signature film look. Check out my INSTAGRAM with 300 pictures of old cars.

The shutter on my XA3 works 95% of the time, whenver it won't work I just close and open the shell again and it works. I had a XA but sold it bc I liked the XA3 more but that XA never had an issue with the shutter button.

Also the light leak on 2nd image is indeed a light like. Damaged back, already serviced now. But it's still plenty sharp and with thick atmosphere I thing so I believe it could work anyway. Whatcha think anons?

You’re absolutely right, I don’t remove dust often. Those are quickie scans on an old 9000f. When I wanna work with the photo I enlarge it or give it to my friend with Epson V850 so the quality is sufficient. But for web purposes those are enough for me.

Yeah, with the aperture it's hard, especially during winter/spring in my area it's pretty dark and indoors even shooting at 1600, I can hardly get higher then 4. This one would be perfect on 5.6 but I just couldn't get the time for it :/
at this set http://fortfoti.cz/portfolio/naplavka-zizkov-18/ I tested the aperture a lot, it goes all the way from 2.8 to 5.6 and the 5.6 ones are actually the most enjoyable I'd say.

How did you develop this one? Sharp enough but seems rather underexposed to me. Fomapan 100 works great for me with D76, 1+3 developing but if I can, I'd recommend you using Fomapan 400 instead. With D76 1+1 it can make amazing pictures.

Developed it in X-Tol, I wouldn't consider it underexposed, there was a really radent sundown light and the contrast was dramatically high, I did what I could.
I don't like Fomapan films, I had this spare roll that I bought in Bratislava one year before and then shot in Poland, when shooting black and white I use mostly FP4 and XP2 Ilford films.

I am also a big fan of Fomapan, living in CZ currently also.

One question for both of you.. how long would you develop foma400 pushed to 1600 in Rodinal? Its my only choice of developer atm and the recipes ive found online arent really to my liking.

They haven't hit the last couple of generations of SLRs though (like the early EOS stuff), so you can find those kinds of bodies for cheap still, plus you'll have lens compatibility with a digital body if you have one. I just picked up an EOS 620 for $30 with two (albeit kit) lenses.

Hey, fomapan 400 isn't really good for pushing. U could do 800 but still, I'd rather use different stock. HP5+ can be pushed to that realiably without any issues whatsoever. Foma struggles when there is not enough light and why to push it when there is, right?

that is probably my favorite shooter. has the most accurate meter of any camera i own, fast autofocus and it's never taken a bad picture. i use it almost exclusively for slide film now. awesome cameras that old guys and memesters discount as being to easy or not authentic enough, but they will just crank out great pictures all day.

I don't find them meme cameras at all. You shouldn't overpay for them obviously, I think you can find them for $50-70.
There are far worse "memes" like the olympus XA-series, any compact contax, mju, etc etc.

I find Minox cameras to be the most pocketable by far. The fold flat which makes them substantially more pocketable than other small cameras (rollei 35, olympus XA, etc.). And they're really small to begin with.
It's the camera that I keep always with me, regardless of whether I'm carrying another "proper" camera too. You throw it in any coat pocket and its as unnoticeable as a pack of cigarettes. It literally fits in jeans pockets and shirt pockets too.

Image quality is good too, 4-element glass lens (like the mju), it's not a toy camera.

I don't think that poster was calling them meme because they're bad cameras a la Holga Dinas, but more because they're one of the compacts that's recently blown up in popularity which jacks up the price.

I spent the last weekend trying and fumbling with my old F-1 at a con. I missed half the shots I took because I got the flash exposure wrong. One of the lenses slowly lost infinity focus thanks to wear in the bushings. Another fungus'd overnight. And it took twice as long to get any picture in focus.

it's sole crowning glory was that the con's actual photographer didn't turn up for the Cosplay so it may have - just may have - the only photographs from the con's cosplay events. If I didn't fuck it up. It was big and brutal enough that the con-staff thought I was the con's photographer.... until I told them I wasn't.

It's a nice old brute of a thing with sentimental value. And it does start conversations.

But I'd rather have used me EOS650. It's fast - can still be manually focused if the Zoot-Zoot from the old lens is intrusive - can usually be manually operated, and has full auto flash that works and bounces. And that I can get a new Samyang 35mm F1.4 for... which will fit and be tack-sharp. It's quiter - even with the motor. And it cost me 25 quid with a 50mm STM,

Even the T70 worked well. Sometimes it's nice not to worry about exposure and shit and just shoot.

My favorite film camera is my EOS 1n. The TTL flashes that were designed for the old EOS cameras are $50 on ebay, and work perfectly. Don't have to deal with trying to manually focus in dark areas, read a shitty needle, or miss a moving shot because you couldn't focus fast enough.

My only gripe with it is that the vertical grip makes it an absolute beast to carry.

Have the 420EZ to go with it. It's like a nuclear weapon at nighttime.

I'll probably bring it alone on my holidays later this year. Was going to bring the F-1 but it takes too much effort for a holiday trip

the only drawback is people don't realise it's a film camera.... it still looks like a 650D. I find I get a better response from people when using the F-1. More patience.

Direct flash can be brutally harsh mind - especially with nothing to bounce off of.

Only lens I have for it is the 50mm F1.8. Good lens but noisy. If I had a split-ring focusing screen I'd focus manually.

Sometime in the new year I'll try dig up a red-ring zoom for it. Maybe and older 24-105.

I picked up a Pen F 150mm Lens despite not having a Pen F because it was stupid cheap(10 bucks perfect condition).
So now I'm looking into getting a Pen F and a roughly 50mm equiv lens.

Anyone have any experience with the 38/40 for the pen F?(42 seems prohibitively pricey for a fuck around lens)
What about portrait lenses?

just picked up a minolta XD5 body from a garage sale for $30. body is in top condition, seems like new. got some batteries for it, meter works fine, tested all shutter speeds in manual and they were fine so I bought it. just now that I'm testing it with a lens at home I realize that the aperture lever won't stop down the lens at all, and both auto modes shoot at weird shutter speeds (always on 1/100 or faster it seems) not corresponding with the meter or speed selector. I'm really bummed out now.

here I'm hoping it's a dirty magnet not releasing the aperture lever, or some dirt on a brush resistor and cleaning that up will, hopefully, sort out the erratic shutter speeds in the auto modes. I'm guessing it's that "last second exposure check" the XD has that it's messing with the shutter speed, with the aperture always remaining wide open...

How do you northern European cope with the lightning in daytime? It's only April and every day you have intense sunlight from 7am - 7pm. It's difficult to photograph anything outdoor without getting photos that looks like shit.

ohhh yeah I've been there. Paid 10 dollars a scan for lowres JPGs blown up and renamed as TIFF, and what's more, had horrible dust on the scan.

There are still some decent places around, but it's probably better to just scan yourself. Plusteks aren't that expensive

that is a Minolta XG1 from 1979 with a Tokina 28mm lens. It takes Minolta MD and MC SR-mount lenses. it uses alkaline batteries, so you don't have to search for weird cells and adapters for mercury ones. it's an electronic shutter and aperture priority. it also has a fully manual mode but without a meter. it was Minolta's entry level slr camera at the time and so are overlooked now- my winning bid on that camera/lens combo on ebay was around $10. there are other models in that series that added more features: the XG-7, the XG-M, and eventually the X-700.

fun fact- recent gold medal decathlon winner in the 1978 olympics, Bruce Jenner was the spokesperson for that camera

good luck if you find out anything, i have a mint exposure meter from 1948 that i would love to use again. the problem with selenium is that it wears out over time. camera makers switched to cds cells sometime in the 60's.

you can just use a light meter on your phone and shoot away, i don't think any of my cameras prior to 1970 still have working light meters.

Amusingly enough, I got a F3 body for 100€ right after DigitalRev had the british weeb guy saying they can be had for a hundred bucks. Which was a very fair price in uh, fall of 2015 or some such. A year later I grabbed a F2 Photomic body in really good condition from KEH for $80 (+ shipping, taxes, etc. amounting to about 130€, BGN because of a shutter curtain wrinkle), which is startling when considering that mju-2s sell for more than this _apiece_.

Don't pay more than like 30€ for a compact camera, lads. Even that is the price of a German compact, not oriental.

Also, Minox has been memed since Andy fucking Warhol. They're like the Ricoh GR from before Daido. If you can get one for 60€ or less, do so-- but remember, the fold-out shit is fragile and your camera too will break one day.

Precisely. The lens is decent at best, which is good for the smallest compact camera. Operationally you learn the "pull cover, tap flash button twice" dance before the camera even turns on. Then when you press the shutter button, it does the little autofocus dance before taking a picture. And there's the motor whine, eating batteries like candy.

Compare to other compacts, which may also have a decent lens for not having to be tiny like the mju-2; but where the camera is always on when it's been advanced, focus is manual so there's no delay, and there's no buzz until the user goes to advance it again. Batteries last forever too since they're hardly used for anything, external flash takes Eneloops for like 150-200 pops so that's that.

That said I'd get a mju-2 if they were like under 10€ again.

/XA3/ shillfag here again,
The optics on the XA3 are way better than the Mju II I'd have to say, The test roll I shot on it showed some images with VERY noticeable softness and chromatic aberration in the corners (Although I suspect this is only the case when it uses larger apertures). The viewfinder is very small with bad viewing angles, DX code with no ISO override, inaccurate focusing at times, loud film winding and having to do the "pull cover, tap flash button twice" dance like you mentioned are the things I dislike about this camera.

Besides all that I think the Mju II is very impressive for what it is. The fact that it's the same size as an XA3 without the flash, has a flash, is weather sealed with AF and an f/2.8 lens is outstanding. I bought the camera to use as a beater camera, something I can take to say the beach or a pub without worrying if it gets fucked up. I had a Ricoh R1S for that but a drink got spilt all over it, which caused it to have problems with the electronics.

My biggest disappointment with the camera is the optical quality

Looks similar to what I get from my Olympus AF-10 (pic related), horrible corners at wide apertures. As far as I've understood the AF series was the precursor of the Mjus and I've seen claims that they use the same lens formulation.

i got an xa2. when the button doesn't fire, it's cause i didn't slide it open all the way or squarely so it fires after closing and reopening.

the only other problem i've had is in wet and cold conditions, i've ended up with some blank frames.

"Dissin' on expensive things" anon here. Hearing about the lens also makes me a bit sad. Here's a shot from a 30€ compact I bought two months back. It's on HP5+, dipped in HC-110(b) for 5m in 20°C. No filter, scanned in xsane, some darktabling applied.

What I'm saying is that it's sharp as fuck all over, even thru a crap-ass scanner.

xsane is the standard program for canoscan 9000f mk2, as far as I'm concerned. A few years ago I went to the trouble of having a Free negative digitization pipeline, and now I do. The results are very adequate for posting on tibetan flipbook websites.

Yeah, I was surprised by how decent the AF-10 can be in good lighting. Also costs literally nothing compared to the Mju-II. Even the AF-1 Super which is the direct equivalent with the same selection of features from 2.8 lens to a weather sealed body (besides being somewhat larger) is way cheaper for whatever reason.

Pic related is my favorite shot with the AF-10, although you can see how the edge sharpness is getting shafted as the camera went for the shadows.

Lads, what have I done? My old enlarger now looks like a toy. =/ I could now enlarge a 35mm neg by more than a factor of 28x. That would make the long edge over 1000mm long. Should I do it? 4 teh lulz?

Yes, you just buy roll paper and cut to length. Though it would be a crazy expensive test. Probably cost £25-35 in paper alone. Plus I've only got trays big enough for 24"x20" =/

And because I'm so tight I'm reconditioning the head myself. Fun stuff though.
