OP just verify that the meter works and that it is accurate, someone already explained the battery situation- if the seller has put an alkaline battery in it that's fine, it will be 2 stops underexposed and you can compensate with the film speed selector.
i have a couple of SRT's and fucking love them, overused cliche but a real tank of a camera and that 58mm f1.4 lens is great for soft portraits and creamy bokeh. it takes all minolta rokkor mc and md lenses which are very good quality and cheap.
the canon rebel gets shit on, but there is nothing really wrong with it tbqh- it can take all the same EF glass as every other EOS and isn't missing any features compared to their higher end cameras with the exception of the viewfinder- it's not as big or bright. the cheap rebels get penta mirrors instead of penta prisms (that's why it's so light) and as you go up through canon's model range the build quality improves, you get weather sealing, etc. from a functionality perspective though, it takes the same pictures as the high end cameras. that 35-80mm lens is kind of garbage however, i would immediately swap a 50mm f1.8 prime which are only $125 new.
