Anyone here own a nikon fm2?

Bought one off craisglist and everything seems ok. But is the film advance lever supposed to spin freely? Its taut when spun at the direction of the arrow but it spins pretty fucking lose the other way.

The film rewind knob does but the advance lever shouldn't

So its meant to be able to move forward freely? Im getting kinda paranoid because its my first time using analog ad i dont wanna pay for blank frames

Yeah when there's no film in the camera it spins freely. The arrows just indicate which way to turn it when rewinding the film

Oh FUCK ANONS. I read somewhere to make the film taut by spinning the rewind knob until it wont anymore. Now its spinning good when i advance lever

Holy FUCK ANONS ive been taking pictures with a loose film. Are those shots wasted? I still have 15 frames left

Dude what? When loading film it is a good thing to make sure your film is advancing by taking up the slack out of the spool by Turing the rewind knob until it stops. No extreme force whatsoever should be used when dealing with cameras especially film

Okay, imagine a roll of film. It's in a little spool, which slots into the bottom of the rewind knob.

When you turn it in the direction of the arrow, it's rewinding the film. Since the film is currently loaded (and hasn't been released from the takeup spool), it takes up the slack and stops. That's the taughtness you're feeling.

When you spin it the other way, you're basically just unspooling it inside the cartridge. It doesn't really do anything except make the film less tightly-packed inside its cartridge. But you still probably shouldn't do it.

Either way, it's normal and not something wrong with your camera.

I did everything correctly except for rewinding film to make it taut which it says to do in ken rockwell nikon guide

Essentially ive been taking pictures with untaut film

Is that bad?

Not to burst your bubble, but get a N8008 as a camera if you don't know about the basics of analog instead of the manual FE2. Not all is lost, just don't expose the roll in daylight when it's not wound up after finishing all the shots.

They're probably fine. Worst case scenario, there will be some slight weirdness with the focus because the film wasn't perfectly flat, but most likely it won't have affected anything at all.

If you are using 36 exp film theres a bit of slack in the roll usually, try rewinding it a tad and see if it picks up the slack.

Probably not. The slack as I said is in the roll itself. You're fine. I would be more concerned with the condition of those light seals, which is a cheap 10 dollar kit on ebay.
