This is one of my favorite pictures I've ever taken. I realize the top is way too overblown. I need to get a GND filter.

Besides that though, what else makes the picture shit and causes you to not want to look at it or look at other pictures I may have taken?

For context this part of the Econolahatchee River right outside of Orlando, FL.

I assume you tried pulling down the exposure to get the top less blown out, it makes the entire image too dark, especially at the bottom left
Like you already mentioned, grad filter there.
Feel like you went too hard on changing the exposure as well.
The grey outlines on the clouds look very unnatural since there's very little detail left on the clouds themselves

If you absolutely insisted on trying to salvage this photo, I'd consider just replacing the sky entirely.

I'm looking at this like, did this motherfucker just steal something I shot 5 years ago and crop it, then I realized I didn't fuck over the highlights on my version of it, which I lost but shot this the same day with the same lighting.

OP done goofed, you owe it to yourself to at least go to Osteen Diner next time you're in Snow Hill. Big Econ has tons of shit like this if you walk around enough.

It's on the same trail. Sometimes it's underwater but it is there. Bring a bike next time. You also won't get that with one shot, that's 5 shots stitched together

It's too dark
You're up too high meaning it lacks depth
It's more of a snapshot rather than having any single identifiable subject, which in this case should probably be the river itself, or head up a bit and make it those two leaning trees
Reflection is wasted
Trees are oversharpened
Horizon also feels off

All small details but ultimately it's mostly uninteresting for the single reason that it has no real subject and depth

I disagree with the bit about the subject. I think the trees are an obvious subject while the river leads to it in a nice and gentle way. The problem I see, beyond the horrific clouds which really should be corrected by multi exposure (it would be super easy in PS or gimp, OP), is the dark and empty corner on the left which can be cropped. The reflection too could have been adjusted during framing.

OP, it's nice but it misses the mark.

In my shitty opinion, stacking different exposures almost always looks bad. I don't think I could personally achieve a nicer picture by stacking exposures.

Yeah it does sometimes, but not if you do it well and meticulously, which actually in this case would be pretty easy.

Lots of pictures you may think are really well exposed are composites done well.
