Photography: The Definitive Visual History is pretty noice as a teacher resource/aid. It does a decent job of covering stuff post 1980. Most photohistory books hit color and the 70s and flounder badly.
The City by Lori Nix is a good collection
Day for Night by Richard Learoyd is also grand but partially as a way to recall the actual prints. A lot is lost in translation to book.
